When I was in middle school groups of white boys would chase me down the halls screaming “n***** f*****” because it would make me cry. Without fail. My parents and grandparents and great grandmother would sit me down and tell me stories of slavery, bigotry, misogyny, r*pe and dehumanization. That is what those words carry. I understand not all people realize this is what these words carry. So people are speaking out about it. That’s what this is about. That is the harm that was facilitated. The ignorance and the weaponization of language under the guise of apathy. I don’t mean to lecture. Im just disappointed in this take. I understand that hatred wasn’t Ian’s intention, but it is nice he is willing to take responsibility. 2016 KZbin was awful for so many children of color and there was an impact. It all feels so counterproductive to undermine Ian’s apology and reflection. Him speaking on his turn to empathy is useful for people on the fence about things. As a black man myself used to really liked Idubbz and I used to think a lot of his racist shock humor was funny. However, that person who use to find that funny also enabled others to make racist remakes about them because they wanted to fit in. Being in my 20’s I can now see how damaging casual racist jokes were to my self image and how I saw other black people were. Racist humor whether with good attentions or not still place a seed of bigotry that can grow into many things. Hate, depression, self doubt, confusion. Bigotry can do a lot when promoted which is why I personally am glad Idubbz understands the impact he could have had and why those jokes were so harmful

Comment i left on idubbbz video: "To be honest Ian, your content did influence a lot of kids to be rather horrible. Anecdotal but nonetheless I experienced A LOT of bullying and harassment from people i considered friends and outside of them directly referencing your content. Discussions about your content, discussions about the use of certain words, were all justified because Idubbbz said so. I was one of the only black student at my high school and the only one in my year group. It was isolating enough to be a different skin colour, but further isolating when people around me started blurting n- f-, or saying those things to my face. No amount of appealing to these kids could save me from the torment. Since people like Charlie don't believe it, I'm here to testify that I infact, as a 19-year-old when Ian's content cop videos were coming out, was influenced by him normalizing slurs and misogynistic language and thought patterns. It affected my beliefs and I had to unlearn it. Ian didn't solely cause that effect on me, he was just one piece of a larger narrative in society. Now he's actually realizing that type of programming is very negative and is used to tear others down, which is what he was doing, and that's what I used to do. So if you're like Charlie and you don't think that type of content is harmful, it definitely can be. Maybe not to you or anyone in your life, but honestly it does make an impact. Criticizing people with wit and mocking people who are really out of line and probably deserve it (keemstar, leafy, tana, etc) is not what Ian is apologizing for. He's apologizing for the slurs and the harassment. Not sure how Charlie missed that. i'm still unlearning the 2016 era vibe of "it's cool to bully others because it makes me feel powerful" which ian definitely gained a large following from. i was 19 and i'm 26 now, and my ego is still arrogant online and fall into the bully stereotype instead of having educated and well-thought-out arguments. tl;dr ian did in fact contribute to creating an army of bigoted edgemeisters. it's cool that ian is realizing certain aspects of his past content were very misguided. charlie missed the point of ian's apology

A lot of people from that time forget that these slurs meant nothing when they were being used. Slurs only make people uncomfortable when they've been taught to feel uncomfortable hearing them, and that shouldn't ever be normalised. Part of the reason they are so common on the internet is specifically because people give those words too much attention in person. Trying to pretend these slurs are genuinely harmful is giving power to meaningless letter combinations and breaths of air for no reason other than to refuse solving a bigger problem. I personally interpreted what Ian was talking about a little different than Charlie. By apologizing for “normalizing that kind of behavior”, I don’t think he was solely referring to criticizing bad creators like how Charlie interpreted it. I think Ian was referring to how he would normalize his own edgy behavior and that would lead to terrible behavior from his fans in real life. Ian himself wouldn’t act with hatred, but he did encourage impressionable fans who don’t fully understand the nuance of edgy humor to act hatefully and spread slurs. He understands that it was a different time, but he can still apologize for what happened. And by just subtlety changing his content, he felt it was “weak” cause it wasn’t enough to make up for what he did. This was an opportunity for him to officially shake off the toxic fans of his past and to admonish that kind of behavior for the future, instead of only allowing people perceptive to the changes to his channel to fully recognize that

Nailed it. I wouldn’t even say it’s the content itself he’s apologizing for, at least from what I’ve seen so far, but more the culture his content created. He was pretty much the face of internet edginess, and a lot of people, specifically people who were in middle school/high school at that time, picked up his humor and ran with it. Even though a lot of those people have moved on, grew up, and no longer hold those views, there is still a sizeable portion who haven’t, and still act that way, and constantly shittalk Ian because he no longer makes that type of content. I completely understand why Ian would come out and make this video. You can still feel the effect his content had online to this day.

As a black person that grew up watching idubbz, I understand yet question some of Charlie's points. I found enjoyment watching his content cops and i do believe they called out people where they were wrong. However, I feel that his use of slurs led me to grow up thinking it was okay. It led me to accept a lot of racism from people as I didn't think it was wrong. I think Ian's impact on young viewers led many to echo this rhetoric in their daily lives, though im sure many people matured out of it as the internet changed. I think it was entirely fine that Idubbz felt the need to officially address his past content. Charlies critisms didn't feel necessary. It can be easy to label the use of slurs as not offensive "shock factor" humor when they aren't targeted towards you. Edit: i dont think idubbz is a bad person, i was a fan growing up and i support him changing as a person.

Idubbbz is addressing it because he doesn’t make that content anymore because he is aware of the impact it had and wouldn’t want history to repeat itself. It was a different time at the time he made it, because back then it was just edgy KZbin jokes that everybody understood was a joke. Its undeniable that there are probably people who were genuinely racist in the audience, and its clear that the effect on children was immense, but again, this was edgy KZbin content in the past, and the people who wouldn’t understand that are children who shouldn’t have been able to watch the content in the first place. Why did you omit the parts where he brought up situations involving his past harassment of Tana and how he hurt some minorities in his community? Like when he mentioned a trans person who is a fan of his going up to him and saying "I know you probably don't like trans people, but can I have your autograph?" Really, Charlie? I think you missed the whole point of his video.

That says more about the Trans person actually. So she judged someone who wasn't anti trans In terms of Tana she was known for saying the n word herself so yes a comedian doing something like that is only something all sorts of comedians do. Def no reason to apologize to Tana of all people.

He was calling people the f-slur left and right, so that trans person probably thought that he would also call them an f-slur. How are you so dense as to not get that? Also, what does Tana saying the n word when she was a teenager have to do with some random dude you didn't know harassing you in public, even if it was for the purpose of criticizing her? You're not doing a good job defending past Ian, and I'm pretty sure he'd clown you for this exact reason. Like that is such a mentally [redacted] argument lol

Bro I was called a n-ggerf-ggot all the time because of iDubbbz back in high school. Not just that but students would go out of their way to find me and make fun of me for being “different”. The dude normalized bigotry. Some of the guys who were iDubbbz fans in high school ended up harassing me as adults to the point where I had to get police involved. I’m 22 now.

@@Cobble01im sorry that happened to you. Unfortunately idubbz would say these things for shock value but anyone who actually watched his videos would pretty quickly realize that he never actually spreaded bigoted messages. Just remember though, that these kids who harassed you would have done so regardless of what idubbz may have said

@@JamesBarton-Johns Actually no, I’m pretty confident they were all directly influenced by iDubbbz and any similar KZbinrs at the time. Hate is learned. @@Cobble01 once again. Im sorry that happened to you. But I just want to point out that idubbz never spread any kind of hateful message. He definitely said certain slurs too much, but he never actually preached hate against any group of people. These kids that copied his words already had that hate in them. I actually liked idubbz during that time and that never translated to me harassing anyone in person or online. But hearing one guy say n***** f***** didn’t make he hate gay black people suddenly. And none of this makes it okay to say things like that and obviously too many of his viewers were too stupid but I always just saw it as shock value/ satirical

The funniest thing is Charlie has been right about him. In the comments section there are so many iDubbbz stans that can't stand what is Charlie saying. iDubbbz is nothing but a complete liar and a fake person. He did this only because he can not make money due to KZbin's ad suitability and also due to new KZbin policies. He always called out simps but turns out is one of the biggest simp ever. Saying that he hurt people and won't do it while at the same time laughing at his opponent's dead mother before boxing match just really shows who he has been all along.

Which is really unfortunate. Most of the harm done wasn't by Ian himself, it was done by kids and teens who lacked parental engagement in their lives. And this isn't me saying that you are or were stupid, but that kids are stupid. Kids don't have high concept functionality, kids tend to take things at face value and go along with things. What we are seeing with Ian is the adults in the room knowing that he isn't responsible for parents neglecting their children, and a bunch of very young adults blaming Ian for their decisions as children who simply couldn't know any better and who didn't have parents teaching their kids values. It is not up to the rest of the world to intuit the values of invisible children they don't know even exist who aren't being raised by their parents. Let me put it this way. If a parent allows their child to spend the parent's money on a video game that is made for, marketed to, and rated for adults, is it the video game company's fault for raising a kid who isn't acting properly? Or is it the parent's fault for not paying attention and not being involved in their child's life. Any adult could tell you back then that you shouldn't have been watching his content, that it was for adults only. I disagree with a great many things Ian has said and done both past and present, but as an adult both back then and now, I don't place him on this impossible pedestal that no one can ever hope to achieve like you seem to placed him on. Those people you hurt could have not been hurt simply by your parents instilling you with values. You were a kid, kids do stupid things, but you shouldn't blame strangers who don't even know you exist for your actions as an individual, child or adult, that just isn't right.
