My 11 year old nephew stays with me for a week every summer playing video games, watching shows and eating junk food together as a time-honored family tradition. I'm 42 so we do a lot of generational media crossover. He's always like "Aunt Heazie, look at this" and it's TikTok videos of repetitive humor just like these NPC videos. He screams with delight. There is something about the repetition that's hypnotic for him. It also exposes me to the huge market out there of media for children (a lot of strange humor). I wonder how many viewers of this NPC trend are children...

Speaking from the future here: The Chinese version, Douyin, had these NPC livestreams for quite a while now. Nowadays, you start seeing people going into more niche setups of these streams. A couple examples I've seen: 1. Multiple dancers - 4-5 different gifts, and a girl/guy/whoever does a dance based on the gift 2. Training NPC - You throw a gift, the guy does 10 push-ups. You throw a different gift, he carries a water tank for 1 minute. You throw a third one, he does 10 squats So if TikTok will continue in the same trend, it will likely evolve rather than disappear completely

This "trend" has actually been around on tiktok for awhile. It's just been popular in Japan/China and it was slightly different. Typically different gifts would be garner a certain movement & sometimes they'd just do said movements on their own while people gifted and sent messages. They'd also dress up in cosplay (I'd usually see neko's, princess peach, etc.) and at times they wouldn't speak. This is just a revised trend of that that's taken off in the US. Doesn't make it any less strange in my opinion.

As he said in the middle of the video it's really telling to show how preteens attention span is screwed on something like this. I got understand like very small children being entertained by this and given their money but, to know teens and young adults are spending their money on this it just feels sad. Also I think this trend is blowing up so big because it reinforces a lot of young people's ideas that they're like the main character in life. Literally having a character on Livestream stare blankly and only respond and make noises to people sending tips or comments, makes those young people feel empowered. But he'll what can I say. At eighteen when I finally got my own computer and KZbin was just starting, some of my favorite videos were weird Gmod animations with short 5 seconds skits and s***.

I was lowkey in the npc trend before it popped off with this Chinese tic toker a few months ago but what he did was he would do work outs for each donation. As an avid gym goer it was funny and cool to pick out the things he did. As weird as it sounds I feel like it hits the same neurons a video game hits in players but escalated because instead of obviously computer generated models, people are still getting the same dopamine blast they would for commanding actual computers but amplified because of the actual real world control they can feel that they don’t feel in their everyday to day lives

I'm glad you mentioned how this NPC thing works because I was kind of guessing. With that reveal, I can surmise this trend's popularity is less about baby-brain goo-goo goofiness and more about the thing that cancel culture gave those that used it -- power over other people's lives. In a nutshell, people who are giving these streamers money are forcing their will onto them -- five bucks to donate an emoji and watch them act on it -- reducing them to things, objects, true NPCs that you can do anything to and face no repercussions over. And I can almost guarantee someone *will* try to NPC one of these Tik Tokers in real life, and it won't end well for someone. This is dangerous a thing to be encouraging. I implore people to stop while they're ahead, while they still *have* a head...
