I appreciate Penn's slowness to cast judgement in this video. There's value within going slow and trying to understand someone's situation or preferences, which seems to be how Penn is approaching the answers to these questions!

Yes true, but also I thought about why the women in this interview was so quick to calling something a red flag and I think it´s because women are conditioned to judge men quicker on their red flags because they have to protect themselves and remove themselves from any situation where they could be potentially harmed/attacked. So let´s appreciate the slowness to cast judgement from Penn but also not judge the women in this video for being quick to judge.

In my opinion, finding Joe attractive isn't a red flag. The show conditions you to find him charming. If we saw the show from Becks or Mariennes eyes, we would 100% think he is insane and not find him attractive. But because we see the show from his eyes, we see how Joe views himself. And because Joe sees himself as a hero who is forced to do bad things, we start to see him as that. The show relies on our trust in a main character who in any other context would be completely detestable. And that is the genius of the show. We want to see him succeed since we identify with him more than any other character. And Penn Badgley just has a lot of natural charm and charisma which makes us less likely to see him as a bad person.
@finpin2622
@finpin2622 Жыл бұрын
True, although I will say I still find it weird when people root too hard for Joe. Even though we're seeing things mostly through his perspective, we STILL see the cracks in his facade and all his hypocrisy. So it's fun to watch him do what he does, and in a way you're like "MAN just stop murdering please" but for me, I'm not rooting for him to succeed 🤣 I want to see that man in peril. Finding him hot is fine, hoping he gets a redemption arc and gets to live a happy life after everything .... Is a bit weird.

@mariyabardarska5895 Жыл бұрын
That. And also, Joe as a person is actually quite interesting. Like I don't get what's with all the automatic hate towards him, he kills people yes, we all know that's bad and no one is defending it, but can we move on to discussing something else about him or maybe go a little deeper? If we imagine Joe with the same perso ality traits but growing up in a stable home entertainment and not developing his... Characteristic hobbies, then he's actually a very intelligent, insightful and might I add - compassionate person. He can understand people very well, better than they understand themselves, and if he used those powers for good, he'd be an amazing person. I personally really enjoy his internal monologues and his observations on society. Granted the people we see on the show are their own personal kind of batshit crazy and awful, and are exaggerated versions of real life people, but nonetheless still those musings ring very true with he world we have.

I think the living at your parents after your mid-twenties (depending on culture) and calling parents mommy and daddy would be a yellow flag. Because it's like Penn said, I would be interested to find out more context, but it's not necessarily a red flag either. It's important to neither judge nor defend someone's way of life because the circumstances behind it matter. Like living with your parents is a perfect example. You have people either saying "oh red flag I would never date a man who still lives with his parents" or "oh he lives with his parents, but it's just temporary. He's been having a hard time finding work, etc.". So it's important to see it objectively. Like WHY are they living with their parents and at minimum, do they have a full-time job that they have sustained for an extended period of time and/or are they actually actively seeking new employment if they were laid off?
@jead7573

I think we're taking labeling things as "red flags" way too intensely. Like a red flag has to be something that points towards a very unhealthy behavior or thought pattern or some issue. Sleeping in socks or in a small bed doesn't really point to anything besides odd preferences in comfort

4:21 THANK YOU PENN! Star signs and astrology are not inherently a bad thing, but when people judge other or write people off / say bad things about them without actually getting to know them its harmful. It's like judging a book by its cover. Also yeah most people that judge people because of that know barely anything about it
@scribblemonster370
@scribblemonster370 Жыл бұрын
I agree to the "know barely anything about it" Part. Because as someone who is a bit much into astrology, these people judging everyone based on just their sun signs is like my last straw lmao. Because behavior is different based on different planets. So at that point, they're just writing people off at a probability of one out of a hundred

i dont think it's a red flag to say joe is hot if they're talking about his physical appearance (because he is attractive) but if they are saying he's hot because of his behavior, there's obviously something wrong with them. the woman that called him charming had a point. that's a big part of how he gets away with things (plus it's an unrealistic show). he is charming and it can make you overlook the bad things he's done and how bad and dangerous he truly is. but it's still never ok to call his behavior hot or say that you want someone to do that to you.
