I have one of the older, black Penn Senator 4/0 I picked up from ebay. Great tutorial, Dennis.

The older black sided reels are work horses. There may be several differences. The first is that they do not use the same bearings. The second is in the drag set up. You may find the wider asbestos drag washers. If you do, you can clean and restore them, or you may want to replace with the newer HT-100 set up. Either way, the reel will last fo another few decades! - Dennis

I caught a marlin on a Senator 4/0 in Mexico. It's interesting how the 70-year old design doesn't even change when they went to Chinese manufacture. The longevity is a test of the good design.

These are great reels. I've seen everything come up on these, with little effort! As noted, the design, which is nearly the same as the Long Beach series is enduring. If I recall, the Penn Long Beach 66 / 67 have the same internals as the early 4/0 Senators and the only difference was the lack of a trim ring. Thanks for sharing - Dennis

You are great thank you for all of the help you have helped me tremendously! A quick question for you what is the proper way to remove the click tongue on one of these Penn Senator 4/0?

Some cannot be removed because they are pressed into the case. The only way to get them out is to use a drill press and drill out the center pin. Of course, the problem is finding a replacement. Some of the Penn Reels in the later Long Beach series used a click tongue with a a removable "C" clip connector. Best to check with the folks at Mysticparts.com to see if there is a substitute part for your reel before drilling out the old piece - Dennis

It is still functional its just a little rusted i just wanted to get a definitive answer because ive never dealt with it before and was afraid of breaking it. Again you are a wealth of knowledge thank you for your help.

It may. These reels are built for endurance, not speed.
