The 1983 Penn State Blue Band performs its traditional pregame show. This is the first year that the band entered with members coming up the middle of the field.

This was the year I was associated with the Blue Band, but didn't march due to health issues. I marched the 3 previous years as F4 in the mellophone rank. Looks like the drill changed completely in 1983, though still looks similar to the one I did. Would love to see video of a pregame between 1980 and 1982. The name sounds familiar. Was Jim a trumpet player? Wait, I think he was a fellow mellophone player. How foggy the memory gets after 40 years.

Hey Scott. Nice hearing from you. I was (am?) a clarinet player. We knew each other in HS from District/Regional band. I remember your health scare at PSU. The drill changed in 1983 when we added another file to the pregame block. We added the tunnel entrance up the middle of the field. I was lucky to be 1 of 2 leading it out.

@@anotherjimmyv I do remember you. Obviously I'm still around, so I did beat the cancer. After Blue Band, I never really got into playing much. I did do a lot of bugle playing with a running club, but not much else. Despite that, I have collected a number of French Horns, Trumpets, a Flugelhorn, and even an old surplus Blue Band Mellophone, probably when they upgraded to the silver horns they use now. If you're ever out to the west coast in the LA area, let me know.

That was my first year at Penn State. I still remember that game against Alabama. What game was this one ?
