I was there at Penn State when this occurred. It was a road game so we watched it at the apartment. There was nearly a campus-wide riot. The streets were flooded. It was amazing. People were standing on top of the loop bus and rocking it back and forth.

To this day, this is the last Notre Dame home game not televised by NBC. Also a young Gary Danielson is the color commentator.

As someone who grew up a Penn State fan, then attended Notre Dame years after this, you'd think I have mixed feelings about this. But I do not because I absolutely despised ND at this time, mostly because of Holtz. To me, the most embarrassing aspect of this game for ND is the fact that they lost to Tony Sacca.

In 1988 they were great. Starting in 1989 after Miami converted that 3rd and 43 only proved they were an overrated ratings machine

Suspect clock management here by Holtz. Two years later against Michigan, Holtz again made some confusing choices in the final minute. That game ended in a tie.

Holtz didn't want to risk putting the ball in the hands of that passing game. The Irish passing game was a disaster in the second half.

@@roadrules3671 Shut up moron. It was one person who actually committed the crime and a few who messed up in dealing with it, not the entire school and fans who had nothing to do with it. How about we put the focus on the actual rapist?

This loss actually didn't completely kill off Notre Dame's national title chances. Had Nebraska beaten Georgia Tech in the Citrus Bowl, Notre Dame's Orange Bowl game against Colorado would have been for the National Championship. Alas, Notre Dame didn't get the help they needed... or the win against Colorado.

I miss the Joe Paterno coached team. Touchdown hand the ball to the official. Sack the quarterback don't dance around for 10 yards beating their chest. Every play mentally ready.

The Irish were up 14-0 and 21-7. Incredibly, at one point they had converted 12 out of 13 3rd downs. And still lost.
