@TheKyleMark9 жыл бұрын
My point isn't really resting on whether it's a mechanical off the shelf gag or completely original so much as the fact that sneaking any slight of hand past Teller honestly is just under sneaking a card trick past Ricky Jay on the good friggin luck scale, no matter whether you invented the method behind the effect or not. I could be way off base, as I am not a magician, but it's my impression as a fan that Teller is about as legit as they come when it comes to vanishes and productions and so on.

YOu know ... had Penn accidentally picked the right card right off the bat - I might have stopped right there and exited looking real significant. Of course it would have killed any further entertainment value but ...

Oh, if only, by pure random chance, Penn had named the card you had in your hand at the beginning. I know you were hoping... That would have been the magicians mic drop moment. 2 seconds, done. They're fooled.

Even if it did work, P&T would just chalk it up to pure luck, which he would agree with, meaning they still wouldn’t be fooled

Well no, had penn guessed it correct than he wouldnt have fooled them because Penn knew exactly what card he had. Knowing something is the opposite of being fooled.

The whole thing would be a lot funnier if he finished the story by saying that he left "just one thing" with the beggar and pulled out the card that was mentioned in the beginning. I'm sure someone with smooth hands who spends 3 or 4 minutes cracking jokes can figure out a way to make that happen.

4:26 Pulls out ring here, which is bigger than his index finger so he can make it fall / slide on easily from gravity. The wallet was a switch inside the jacket (you might think he was having difficulty putting it away where it came from). The watch was there all along. The other one was pulled out at 3:32 and just laid over his wrist (you can see the lose restraints "removing it"). I'm not entirely sure the technique he used to make the items disappear, however. That is because I'm a Computer Scientist and not a Magician. :) Really loved the comedy for this trick and thank you for being on 'Fool Us'. :)

Hey Ben, I was reading through some of the comments (and having watched several of the recaps of other magicians from "Fool Us") and I've come to a conclusion: There's 3 types of commenters; those who know the trick and respect magic but just want to confirm it in subtle questions, those who don't have an iota of a clue and pretend they do, and then those who are just asshats (who probably have no idea anyway). Anyway, magic, to me, has always been more about the presentation than the illusion itself. Anyone can learn to use the basics of sleight-of-hand and make something "vanish" but very few make the effort to make it a delight to watch, even if it's a classic, well-known trick where everyone knows the steps (P&T did that walking bass and cigarette trick telling everyone all the parts and techniques, then walking people through each step and revealing the trick). You sir, were fun to watch, engaging, and your actual trick was pulled off rather well (again, I've seen variations of this, but when someone can pull it off this well and this smoothly, it makes the knowledge of *how* it's done become less and less important, but leave you focusing on the fluidity of your technical skill, as well as the grace of our misdirections). Awesome performance!

+Rex Spaulding Thank you Rex!! What a fantastic comment. I am happy that you "get it." Like you said, so many people who comment miss the boat completely, and its refreshing to be acknowledged by people who understand. Thank you for the kind words. On a side note, my vanish of the items and part of the reappearance is different than other things that have been in print. So all the guesses that people post are kind of funny in a way. I get to watch know it all's claim the figured it out and boast a completely incorrect method. But in the end, none of that matters. its exactly what you said. All about presentation and putting heart into it. Thanks for being great. p.s. I did two travel channel specials (posted on this same youtube channel) that you might really dig! A bunch of original magic and classics performed with a twist. Feel free to check them out. Cheers new friend! And pp.ss. if you want to see a great example of youtube interactions from this thread i just posted an epic screenshot on facebook.com/comedyandmagic

+Ben Seidman You wrote that pretty much all of the guesses about this trick have been wrong, but with the 'magic' of replay and slo mo, some of your secrets are pretty obvious. It really does look like you're palming the objects and not putting them in the envelope. And the reappearance of the ring and watch were pretty obvious. (Not in real time, just on replay)....Just wondering if you ever acknowledge when someone gets something right...And to me, the trick isn't ruined when I can see how it's done on slo-mo replay. It just makes me respect the fact that someone can pull off such amazing sleight of hand right in front of someone's face.
@TheComedyAndMagic8 жыл бұрын
+Contra Bullshit Hello! I intentionally kept my hand more closed than it needed to be to throw people off the scent. I wanted people to think that I was palming out items and it worked. Just a red herring. I try not to discuss method much on public forums. A good magician strives to leave his audience with the feeling of wonder instead of a puzzle to solve. Plenty of people will watch, and rewatch, trying to figure out the method. That is fine. People can try to rob themselves of the experience we try to provide. Some like you feel as thought they appreciate it more. But i'm not trying to impress people with how skilled I am. As hard as it is, I'm trying to create the feeling of wonder. That's what i strive for.
@MrKilopapa8 жыл бұрын
Ben Seidman I appreciate your kind response. But still, how in the name of Jehova's unicycle did you do that goddamn trick!!!!😁
@MrKilopapa8 жыл бұрын
Ben Seidman Oh, and if I may say, by intentionally appearing to "palm" the items, could it possibly take away from the sense of wonder that you are trying to create for your audience? Because if it "looks" contrived or unnatural, don't you run the risk of looking somewhat amateurish or silly? (You don't look amateurish by any means, but COULD it possibly portray that?)

This is the first one I've seen where I could tell pretty much exactly how he did every trick. But I had a lot more fun watching him than watching some of the people who actually fooled Penn and Teller. Super funny!

I'm guessing he had two watches on his wrist, the ring which you can see him put back on from his left pocket, and a wallet which mechanically can hide one note.

That is probably the funniest magic performance I've ever seen. What a ridiculously great line of dialogue that included some double entenders I'm not even sure you meant to throw in there. So glad that Penn and Teller didn't bust the trick because I'd love to see that one in person one day.

This is another of those acts where the magic is secondary to the comedy. He could be a comedian. His delivery is well timed and his jokes are very funny.
@Toastmaster_50008 жыл бұрын
Y'know what kind of bothers me? Penn will often bring up a trick that he saw someone else do, but it doesn't mean he (or Teller) knows how it is done.
@DanteAtropos8 жыл бұрын
Peter Schmidt They have a back panel of judges who already know how the trick is done(contestants disclose it ahead of time) , they reaffirm the conversation between Ben and Teller to see if they get fooled or not.
@kevinducharme39888 жыл бұрын
Basically what Henry said just expanding it a little. First off The Hold Up is fairly well known but really hard to pull off. Also Penn uses a lot of code words that only other magicians would understand; pretty much probably 1/2 of what he says has a double meaning ( or if you watch other videos, Penn will say a nonsense word like "I noticed the goat" or something that makes no sense to anyone who doesn't study magic), And if the magician says "there was no goat involved, then = fooled. Plus like Henry said, the contestants (who have had to reveal the trick to the judges (not to Penn and Teller), The judges will say "You didn't get it right" = Fooled Them. Only seen like 4 times where the judges made the final decision, usually Penn will say something (again like "You didn't use the goat???" and then admit that He and Teller were fooled..
