This is the scene that really makes the end of PD so hard. Ethan's love could not save Vanessa a second time; that he could not deny her again. I can be at peace with the notion that Vanessa would never be given a happy, normal life and that her flame extinguished far too soon. But to end it in the way that did was unfair not only to our brave and tormented heroine, but also to the complex and rich characters that surrounded her. Ethan was never allowed to truly fulfill his true destiny, especially with all the build up and only for it to end here.

I just binged the whole series twice, back to back, and I knew from the first episode how it would end. There was so much foreshadowing the first season, from the moment these two characters met. It was Ethan's nature to promise Vanessa he would save her, and her nature to believe him. But in the end, she could be free only in death. Even if the series was cancelled and cut short, and these two originally were meant to have more time together after Ethan's trip to America and Vanessa's encounter with Dracula, their arc always was heading in only one direction. The Lovers, yes, the deepest, truest kind -- strong enough to let it end ❣️

Skinny G No, not me. I've seen too many possession scenes in film and even heard one or two in radio shows. Strip any possession scene down to its frame, and it's a good vs. evil, devil vs. divine battle. That's all. What makes this so tedious in Penny Dreadful is that there are MANY such battles. Opposing forces abound in this series. The "good vs. evil" struggle is the most basic in life, in general. It's not new to anyone, BUT Penny Dreadful has made something very arresting (and entertaining!) out of it by embellishing it with the dark pasts of the characters. Then there's the possession scene. It's a bore because it IS stripped down to its barest good vs. evil struggle. There's nothing to feed the imagination, the intellect, or the interest. Additionally, "Vanessa as victim" isn't exactly a new theme, either, so truly, I see nothing new in this scene at all. Please keep in mind that, for better or for worse, I speak only for myself! :)

It's unbearable to watch Vanessa's despair. Her life is a never stopped fight with evil. She is exhausted but Ethan wasn't ready to give up. I wish they've had a chance for that fantasy Vanessa had with family and children. I love this show but it is so hard to rewatch it because of this level acting. Their pain and suffers are too real.

Ethan, as rugged as he is, could easily be hard-bitten by his adventures both in America and now in England, but he's not. He's kind and a sweet protector - not just of Vanessa, but of right vs. wrong. That fight has manifested itself in a number of ways throughout season 1, and on several occasions, Ethan was there to do what was right. That's very endearing, and it would be, even if he wasn't surrounded by weakness and corruption. I hope he doesn't crack under the pressure!

This was major foreshadowing of the end of the show, I don't know why so many people missed this. He exorcises the demon with the medal of St. Jude, the patron saint of lost causes. It was at that moment in the show that I knew how this was all going to end.

But when he takes the medal from Brona and speaks in Latin to expel the demon that tormented Vanessa, I was speechless. Although he looked cloudy when demonic voices are heard in Vanessa😱

Find me, find me, save me, save me! (Some demonic language)" from the seance scene in episode two. Near the beginning of the exorcism you can also hear Dorian's voice kind of intermingled with Mina's and then right before the seance spiel, you can hear some woman talking.

In this darkened world, we sometime believe that we can't be redeemed. This is the trick that both characters almost bought into. But this is also plays in the origin of the wolfman, that he is a God believing man that has been cursed. The spirit of the wolf finds a virtuous man that is far from being a stranger from God. Killing her would be the wolf taking one more night of peace from him.

I have a very keen eye for spotting mistakes in horror movies/series and I would never have thought that PD would make one. Notice Brona's necklace on Vanessa's forehead, in the head shot panel the chain faces the left side but on the bird's eye view, it faces the opposite direction. There should have been clean continuation. I could do this for a living.

I'm just watching this and very curious to hear how the exorcism actually occured. Is there more to the Ethan Chandler character than the routine wolfman syndrom (; or were unseen forces working through him to expel the demon/devil in Vanessa? Edit: Just finished watching and WTF? Autopsies of scenes usually provide a little more information than this, all we got was a forward and than hey! This happened. Major disappointment here. :(

Beatmyguest001 Which really doesn't make any sense to me, based on his slaughter when he 'wolfs-out.' His curse and Vanessa's are definitely similar from a thematical point of view: prone to acts of violence during weird blackout periods, conflicted about their own nature, things like that. But there really doesn't seem to be much suggestion as to why Ethan should be able to call on any religious / spiritual link, as unlike Vanessa - per showrunners - Ethan isn't really aware of how wide and deep the split in his nature has become (paraphrased: they actually stated he's not aware he's a wolfman). The most I can come up with is that he's got a sort of backhand of God thing himself, but unlike Vanessa, he's a bit more heaven bent. I really don't know. I'm looking forward to tonights (May 17th) episode, but I wish it was touching on some other character than Vanessa, again and again. The character we seem to get more background and screentime with than Vanessa is Frankenstein & his creature, with little left for the other three to five cast members (Ethan, Sir Malcolm, Sembene, & the Villains).

+Gangrel Aussie You have to remember that the story takes place in a world where such things as magic and prayers have real power. Ethan does not need to be a superhero to call on the saint's aid. He only has to be pure in intent and strong willed. She is a soul at war with a demon, and thus she is one of the people that God and the saints protect and succor. When Ethan calls Jude, the spell is broken because that's the point of the prayer. That's the world PD is presenting - darkness and light both incarnate.

there were clues strewn along the way: the two biggest ones were 1) the Ripper murders had suddenly begun happening again, only the bodies were mutilated differently...and Ethan was strangely, if not coincidentally, avoidant of the topic, and 2) the episode when some of them (including Ethan, of course) went to the zoo at night in search of Mina. Wolves surrounded them, and Ethan stepped forward, unafraid, and offered his hand to a wolf, who gently took his hand in its teeth. aside from being a big fat clue, it was a HELL OF A SCENE!! wow!
