Back then the TV schedule for nationally televised games was determined in the summer before. So they thought Shaq would stay with the magic, obviously, and had the magic on crazy amount of national games even though they weren't an elite team anymore.

@raypratt36114 жыл бұрын
Damn shame,cuz penny had maybe the most complete arsenal on the offensive side of the ball!!he had a lifhtening quick first step to the rack for a thunder dunk,incredible array of moves down around the post,a decent perimeter shooter and one of the most creative and gifted passers the NBA has seen,espesially since he wasn't a TRUE PG but instead could get down pn the block and post ya up like Larry Legend as SF or could play either G position on any given switch and I would say he was definately the nicest passer at 6'7" with only one other player that comes to mind,EARVIN JOHNSON !!its jjst too bad because people have forgotten just HOW F'N GOOD Anfernee Hardaway really was and if not for injuries I'm thinkin this guy given of course the right players around him would have gotten back to the finals a couple more times and most likely would have really grown and matured into probably an MVP caliber player for many seasons!!

This was after Brian Hill was fired and before Chuck Daly took over as coach. I know Penny Haradway had a good stretch under Richie Adubato. Maybe in hindsight the Magic should have kept him as coach. Penny complained about Brian Hill that he was constantly using him to post up on point guards and felt the strategy was getting stale and taking away from his game.
@Mario-re2qp9 жыл бұрын
+David Carlyon It was, even when Shaq was there it was getting stale. Basically every play had to end with Hardaway dumping it to Shaq. It got tired and boring, instead of making the Magic a faster paced team (we saw how good a faster game with a lot of ball movement worked for San Antonio in beating the Heat in the finals). It was a shame the clueless Magic management didn't go after for Pat Riley (Heat did instead) when he was available or let Audubato coach. Reportedly Shaq wasn't happy about them keeping Hill either, and part of the reason he left. Coaching was really the reason the Magic lost in 95 and played a big part on the 96 defeat against the Bulls. The Magic blew out Houston in the first half of that 1995 1st finals game.... sigh. Nobody would have thought the Magic would lose that game or that series... much less get swept
@davcar35688 жыл бұрын
Magic got sweeped by the Bulls in 1996. But injuries were a huge factor in that sweep. Not saying they would have beaten the Bulls if they stayed healthy because they wouldn't have beaten them. But the loss may not have been so lopsided.
@davcar35688 жыл бұрын
Horace Grant was out the whole series after the first game with a broken arm. Hardly a minor injury, Nick Anderson was also out of the lineup with a wrist injury
@davcar35688 жыл бұрын
Not fan of the team. Just being analytical and objective. As you mentioned Grant missed three games and Nick missed one so the injuries were not minor if they couldn't play.
@jamalabdelbaset64697 жыл бұрын
davcar35 Yeah, I felt that way too. Richie showed his coaching credentials with the Liberty in the W too. Chuck Daly was not a good fit for Penny. For whatever reason, he did not like Penny.
