The only people the Group wanted, in twelve years, were Bernadette and Stuart...And Stuart was never seen as an equal .

The only reason Penny and Leonard made it to the end together is because it was written that way, they broke up a few times and instead of cutting ties like both of them have done in past relationships the writers kept her as part of the group, yeah he treats her good and she sleeps with him, but that's all they have. Both have tried to take an interest in the others hobbies only to fail, in Penny's case not only does she have no interest, but she continuously makes fun of him for everything he likes, but when he laughs at her belief in all things new age (tarot cards, psychic readings and fortune telling) it becomes a problem. Because of her always hanging out with the guys (mooching off their food and WiFi) they have become friends, but there's nothing else there that would lead to a romantic relationship especially when compared to his other relationships and women who were attracted to him, hell that older woman who gave him money for the university was a better fit than Penny.

She belittles him all the time, from hiding his nerdy toys to forgetting about important dates of his, to things always going her way and not Leonard's- all the while being portrayed as the "prize" that Leonard is lucky to have. Concerning Sheldon: Amy's character was not fully consistent, when comparing the first appearances to the later ones - the writers evolved her, based on Mayims comedian talent+strengths and insights on what a Sheldon-counterpart needed. Just remember Leslie Winkle: while there were single nice scenes between her and the rest, her character didn't work at all, and neither did the actress. Female characters amongst an originally mostly male, nerdy sitcom are delicious, which already became obvious in the unaired pilot, with 3 girls, we never saw again, not even as a guest appearance.
