Trucker Tip: If you find you're depleting your brake air psi in traffic etc, drop it down into a lower gear, and crawl consistently just a bit slower than the traffic is moving, rather than accelerating, braking, accelerating, braking, accelerating, braking etc. This will prevent you from having to brake as often, give you higher engine RPMs to replenish your air reserves quicker, keep your engine cooler, and give you better fuel efficiency. You'll know you're doing it right, if there's always a few car spaces in front of you. Also, be careful when going down long hills/mountain grades. These larger trucks require a lot more braking friction than regular cars to slow down/stop (especially with 10,000lbs on the tires). Not only do you not want to run low on air in those situations, you don't want to overheat your brakes either (because then, you can't stop at all). If the engine can't maintain the bulk of your downhill speed, throw your 4-way flashers on, slow her down, and drop it another gear. Check your mirrors every 15 seconds, and watch for any signs of smoke coming from the rear tires. If you see/smell smoke, pull over at a safe spot for 20-30 minutes, and let em cool off - it's as simple as that. Safe travels!

I just rented the 26ft truck and I was very happy I went with pesky. I blew my back out the first day of a 4 day pack . I was worried my back would not make the 9hr drive but the seat was awsome. Also all the safety features worked great . The ride was smooth even over pot holes . I rented budget the first move an got screwed over . Will rent from penske from now on .

My tip, brake sooner turn wider, check your mirrors constantly, stay in the right or middle lane unless you have to and when in doubt just let them pass you if you're trying to merge. Also if you see something like a tree hanging low don't go near it. When backing it up make sure you give yourself space and then start backing and make sure the sides of your target is parallel with your mirrors and then go straight back from there. Don't let the size of the vehicle intimidate you too much at the same time be cautious of your surroundings the vehicle is big and if you hit someone with it they're gonna get hurt.

@@CatesCube We could have. We planned on pulling a cargo trailer behind, we had bought a tow hitch extender as the receptacle would not let the ball and hitch stick out far enough. The extender worked great. Got one a tractor supply for about $60. But our cargo trailer lost it's brakes. So we chose to go the safer route and not tow. So yes, but it was our gear we were not comfortable with.

Here's a little tip in case no one knew. When doing a uturn at a light never cut short. Drive straight then turn don't cut right qt the crosswalk. Internationals have a good turning radias and you'll most likely make your u turn every single time

I would disable the 6th gear. If you still find your speed gaining I would apply the brakes until you are about 5mph below what you want then let off. Do not ride the brakes.

The truck in video is an International.....Penske also uses Freightliners which have slight differences in the features and controls....I rented a 26 ft Freightliner Penske for a 600 mile move a few years ago.....I averaged about 10 mpg for the trip which was almost entirely on interstate highways.

Wish you done a video on the 16 foot truck. Just drove one from Midwest to West Coast. The truck itself is easy enough, but the dashboard controls are mysterious. Was wondering if these trucks just have primary and secondary air tanks or also have a wet tank or could have a dry tank? That's older air brake systems but still wondering since modern day, most trucks just have the two tanks with the drain valves on the bottom and safety relief valve on top of the primary tank.

As shocking as it is, you do not need a CDL as far as I know because it is under the GVWR CDL cut off weight of 26,001 pounds, regardless of if it has airbrakes or not. I think that it just has the primary and secondary system with an air dryer.

Mark, when you are going up-hill, the truck will usually select the correct gear automatically. But, as the video says... if the truck keeps shifting back and forth between 5th and 6th gear, you can disable the 6th gear while going up hill. The switch sometimes says "6th gear disable" and sometimes is says something about "overdrive", because 6th gear is an overdrive gear for highway driving. One thing I noticed is that the truck will slow down significantly before it downshifts to 5th gear. To avoid losing speed, I found it useful to disable 6th gear just before starting to climb hills. Of course, I was driving a fully loaded truck and towing a 6000 pound trailer (car carrier). So YMMV. When you are going down a long steep hill, it's the same as driving a car. Select the appropriate gear on the gear shift lever to help slow the truck and avoid overheating the brakes (or losing too much air pressure). Regarding reversing: Try to avoid getting into a spot where you need to back-up. Pull thru parking spaces when possible. When you need to back-up, always get out of the truck and look behind the truck for any obstacles... because there is a big blind spot behind the truck. One thing to note: You cannot back up when you are towing a car dolly. This is why I prefer a car carrier. A car dolly (tow dolly) is one of those trailers that allow you to drive your car onto it with only the two front wheels of the car on the dolly. A car carrier is the type of trailer that you can drive the whole car (all 4 wheels) onto the trailer.

To start out, park in a empty parking lot where you can practice driving if possible park a car or have someone stand by the rear bumper on either side and look at them with your mirrors. Doing this will show you how it looks when some one is right on your rear end. Then have them move back to an acceptable merging distance. The truck has 2 different mirrors for a reason. The large "flat" mirror is great for judging distances but has a limited field of view. Use this to determine if you are far enough ahead of the car you are merging in front of. The smaller convex mirror is your blind spot mirror. It has a larger field of view but it is hard to determine distances from it. Use both to determine if you have room to change lanes. Good Luck!

You should fit under most. I would look for a height call out just to be sure as most station have them marked. Also if fueling up at truck stop the semi truck bays will fit you

I got it for a flat rate, and ended up being a third of the cost as compared to uhaul. For example, I moved my stuff and all of by roommates stuff for the same price to rent even though they lived 150 miles away from me. You can really use the unlimited miles to cut cost with multiple people if you get a bigger truck.

It just disabled the 6th gear from what I could tell while driving. I do believe that if it had an exhaust brake it would have a switch to engage and to select how many cylinders to engage it on.

I am renting a 22 foot truck to move from Oklahoma to Arizona, I have made the drive once before and in New Mexico and Arizona I will have to go through some very steep inclines and very steep descents, I think I remember there being 10% grade and they last a long while, anyhow, I have drove air brake equipped vehicles before but my question is is the box truck safe to drive in those conditions? I feel like I will ride the brakes and run out of air

This is when the 6th gear disable and down shifting to 4th will really help you out. If you need to use the service brakes, use them until you are around 5mph slower then the target speed and let off to allow them to cool. Apply again after you gain 5-10 above your target speed

I just rented a 26 foot Penske truck for our move from Wisconsin to Arizona. On the road the truck would randomly slow down from 60 to 65 down to the low fifties. Foot to the floor, nothing I could do about it. I was routinely passed by UHaul 26 foot trucks, one that was towing a car. At times the gentlest incline would reduce my speed to the mid forties. Terrible experience. Added an entire day to our move. To their credit they issued me a sizable refund but the new Penske trucks are underpowered and not up to the task.

Yes they dont have aloit of power perhaps you were hitting a headwind. Any truck will slow down alot when the wind shifts. Most trucks you need to run with the throttle all the way down to make it go.

MPG is rather hard to gauge due to traffic conditions, age/condition of truck, weather, average speed, load and driving styles. This trip I got 9-10mpg and another it was less. The truck had a MPG meter but after hand calculating the MPG I found it was incorrect. Similar trucks I have driven for work I was lucky to get 8 so I do not have a baseline to give out.

I am not 100% certain but I do not believe that you do but it may very by state. I know in Ohio where I used to work we had about 3 of these non-cdl trucks with air brakes and the drivers did not need a cdl but they did have to fill out a drivers log.

I know legally you don't need a CDL to drive a truck like this but I think penske should require them because I rent these things out to people who just have no idea what they're doing. old grandma can't just go from a prius to a big international truck in 5 minutes. you get people who don't understand how air brakes work which isn't good. they put the truck in park with a trailer attached to it on a hill and they don't know how to let the air out of the brakes so you don't break the locking pin in the transmission and send the truck rolling down the street.

Please don’t use this advice for all Penske trucks. Like I said in an earlier comment, they have at least 3 different manufacturers for these trucks and they are not all the same. So your best bet is to read the owners manual first. But thank you to this guy for trying.

You didn't show the height limit sign on the box looking in the mirror! Why? That's one of the biggest mistakes you could miss and a driver needs to know this while driving one of these trucks.

What they don’t tell you is the fact that the DEF tank is on the passenger side. Which means you can’t fill it from the cheaper pump price at a truck stop. Which then you have to buy the expensive boxed crap and fight to try and get in in the tank even with the hose they supply. Price difference..... 2.99 per gal. Vs $20 for a 2.5 gal. Pack. Better get yourself a jug with a pump in it, or plan on a lot of cussing.

Odds are you probably will not have to put any in as it does not burn as fast as the fuel. When I had to purchase DEF for work I got the Walmart brand for abound $8 a jug. They also had the name brand stuff for around $12.

What do you mean? Pull in the other way or use the hose from the other side? On the trucks we haven't deleted the def from is on the passenger side and I've never had an issue using the def pumps at any truck stop.

@@OGKZbinEnjoyer The fuel tank was on the drivers side. The DEF tank was on the passenger side. When refueling, the hose on the drivers side pump will not stretch to reach over to the passenger side.

This isn’t all Penske trucks. They are made by 3 different companies. So your best bet is to read the manual before you take one out.

Valid point, however just the fact of bringing the concept of brake psi up to new operators is huge in my opinion. The past few trucks I rented with Penske they just tossed the keys at me and let me on my way with no training what so ever.
