I know you haven't asked for this but I had to list my all time favorite pens, at least fountain pens. Sailor King of Pen with an ebonite body. What a great nib! Pilot Custom 743 with a Soft Fine nib. ēnnso Italia Titanium with a titanium nib. Parker 180 with the Medium/Extra Fine nib. Pelikan M800 Benu Talisman Dragon's Blood Theo list could go on but you have to stop somewhere.

Do you have the medium or broad KOP nib? I’m considering one in M some time in the future maybe and the ebonite is what I’d go for. If you have the M nib, is it on the finer side of medium? That’s what I’ve heard but I’ve never tried one. I just wish they made the KOP with a fine nib! I had a 743 SF, very nice but for me I found the SF felt a bit “mushy”. Was worried a Custom Urushi would be the same but I got a great deal on one and thankfully it is more springy. Downside is it’s a medium and I am wondering if even the FM would be too broad for my everyday writing.
@paulmchugh1430 Жыл бұрын
@@adamzappia2213 I have a Broad that Sailor ground to an Extra Fine. But like other Japanese nibs, the line is narrower than the Western version. A Sailor Medium will write like a Western Fine. Sailor nibs have a definite feedback that is distinctive but does not detract from the writing experience. I believe Sailor still uses Iridium for the topping material. My Pilot Soft Fine has a lot of bounce. I wouldn't call it "mushy". And it is a very smooth nib. I find Pilot nibs to be the most consistent in terms of quality and performance. I hope this helps.

I have six Sailor Pro Gears and three KoPs. The KoP’s Broad nib definitely writes like a true Western broad (excepting maybe a Pelikan or Montblanc broad). The M nib varies slightly to a true Western medium to a medium-fine or fine. If you normally prefer a Western F, Sailor’s M is the only way to go.

I downsized my own collection from a high of a 110 pens to just 60, right now. I’ll possibly part with some more pens and settle for a final set of absolutely indispensable, firm favorites. I’d say that ‘too many’ is probably when you don’t love them all - and certainly cannot or do not get to use them all. Of course, many pens lend comfort just by being there, but I’m now convinced that pens lying idle in storage for most of the year or simply not being among the favorites really ought to leave the collection. I think I could actually happily live with ‘only’ 20 pens.

But that’s with other implements for my architectural work. Anyway, keep at it and find a way to keep, use and enjoy approximately the number of pens you really love and need most. I’m really happy to have downsized to 60. I’ll definitely sell or give away around 10 more pens. And I’ll leave room to carefully select and buy just a few more in the near future. Same with ink. I’ve pared down my bottled ink collection from around 70 bottles to just 40 now. And I never bought ink ‘sample’ vials. I always regarded them as a cluttering nuisance.

Always the best pop tart. My current favourites are, in no particular order 1) 1970s Pilot Elite, 18k nib. Nice and smooth with just the right amount of feedback. Also a great size and doesn't dry out easily. Use it a lot for important documents, inked with Platinum Pigment Blue. 2) Jinhao x750. Smooth writing stock medium nib and comfortable in my hand when posted. Even better since I put on a #6 Goulet Pens Flex nib. Currently Inked with the wonderful Ginger Chicken. 3) Majohn A1. This is my main work pen as I don't have to worry about a cap. The EF nib is surprisingly smooth and won't dry out. Does suffer from a little "leakage". The ink flows too easily in the feed when writing, causing the ink to pool some on top of the nib. Currently Inked with Platinum Carbon Black, appropriate for the matte black pen. Those are my main pens right now.

My favorite fountain pen has yet to change since 1983. A grey Esterbrook J. Nib? Usually using the one they seem to have come with by default unless you chose different, the firm medium 2668. But it's all about the writing experience for me, so what I want to use changes with the wind. A different Esterbrook nib? Sure! A Parker one either in my Challenger or 45? You betcha! A lovely semi flex Sheaffer's Junior? Great! A Conway Stewart stub (from when they actually made their own nibs)? Certainly! My list can go on and on.😁 How a pen writes is more important than anything else to me. I would rather use an old Waterman's Taperite with a cigarette burn than a $10000 Montegrappa, if the Italian pen doesn't write well.😉
@sajjadhusain4146 Жыл бұрын
It may sound trite, but it’s absolutely true that the nib and the way the pen writes is really what matters most above and beyond all else. Paul, my own list of very expensive personal favorite pens of all time is, luckily, also all pens that write truly wonderfully. They wouldn’t be so special and worth the price to me if they wrote anything less than great. I assure you that a Montegrappa costing a few hundred or a few thousand dollars is very likely to write splendidly. All of mine do. I’m so tempted to write an A-list of vintage pen favorites. You wouldn’t be the least surprised to know that Esterbrook, Sheaffer and Waterman would be automatic picks on any list of mine. 🙂
@paulherman5822 Жыл бұрын
@@sajjadhusain4146 Went with Montegrappa because they're frequently $10, 000. And Italian pens have a "certain reputation."😁 So many seem enthralled with a fancy plastic or design, and tend to ignore the way the pen writes, or ignore subpar performance because it's the latest "resin flavor of the day." I would probably include the Parker 45 in your list. Arguably the best pen Parker made.

@@paulherman5822 "Certain Reputation" Those be fighting words Paul. I'm kidding. Obviously Italians are know for their flair. Who are we kidding, Pelikan is probably the most exciting German pen out there. But there is an Italian pen that just steals my heart - OMAS. I find comfort to be the most important, because I can always work on the nib. OMAS looks good, feels good, and writes like a Lamborghini. Not that I have ever driven one, but you get my point.

@@ironmic9244 Might be a lurker usually, but occasionally I seem to be the voice of "BVP" (Big Vintage Pen, that shadow entity that has my soul and any spare money 😂). Vintage seldom has the flash of many modern pens, except possibly the "originally sold out of a cup by the cash register" budget pens, and the survivors tend to write beautifully. This is why it bugs me when someone pays well above budget prices and has to tweak it to get it to write well. I expect it from budget or student grade pens. Not $100 USD plus.
@ironmic9244 Жыл бұрын
@@paulherman5822 Oh yeah I agree that a pen should need to write out of the box. I probably didn't explain myself properly when I said comfort is the most important. To me how the pen feels in my hand is the most important. I can work on the nib, but the nib has to WORK! I meant making it how smooth or grinding it etc. But yeah, the nib has to work. This be the problem with vintage for me. I just find them too small and thin for me to write comfortably with. I'd love to get some vintage pens: Waterman 52 in ebonite ripple, Parker Vacs in that stacked celluloid, OMAS Extra, MB striated celluloid. I know some are larger, but I also worry about the condition they are in. Perhaps vintage pens were just made with better care, or I think the ebonite feed has much to do with it, but I'm no expert, just an observation.

Also - it is fully cigar shaped. I bet that also makes you like Benny better. 😅

PS. I subbed because I enjoyed the way that you introduced me to the pen world. Now I'm hoping for a weekly, at least a monthly 3am recording 😅 I find your 3 am mind very easy to relate to 😊🤪

I’ve been into some Chinese oolong tea. Loose tea. Mmmmm ordered from China. Not at 3am though. 😊 Get some rest 🥳 I love that Pilot Falcon.. don’t own one yet. I love the con 70 😂 Cool list. I just got the Monoc by Schonedsgn.. might be my favorite writer now. Omg.. wow.

11:36, Visconti sucked and sucked bad. In other news, expect snowfall during Canadian winters.

I have had nothing but great luck with, and love for my four Visconti pens.

@@ichirofakename..Ha, that’s harsh. Italian pens, certainly all of the many I own (save one or two) are the best of both worlds; they look beautiful and write sublimely.

@@sajjadhusain4146 Most of my pens are Italian. No problems here, even the 4 Viscontis. I feel Visconit is tainting all Italian pens. German pens also have issues, yet not mentioned so much.

@@ironmic9244 ..I also think an alleged ‘reputation’, certainly Visconti’s, can be rather overblown and unfairly taint and follow a brand , despite many instances to the contrary. I just think that in the past, Visconti has been no worse than many others, across countries, brands, price and prestige.

Personally I’m anti-benu because they’re Russian, but they are pretty… Anyway, as a fellow insomniac I applaud your efforts here. Keep drinking and writing.

What I've read is that Benu moved out of Russia to Armenia in protest and also speaking out against the war after Russia invaded the Ukraine. I don't think youtube will allow me to provide a link but if you are interested do your own internet search.

Hi. Visconti pens are overpriced trash, you should get yourself a Montblanc 149, now this is a real classy pen.🤗 Cheers.
