Pentagram 'Sign of the Wolf' from Relentless

metal history. Influenced by British bands The Groundhogs and Black Sabbath, their own take on Doom Metal has subsequently influenced everyone from Paradise Lost to Cathedral. The band continue to tour and impress to this day, and though the band line-up has changed many times over the years, enigmatic vocalist Bobby Liebling remains at the helm, with Pentagram now widely-regarded as a true cult band with a fan-base transcending whole generations.
"Relentless" was the band's debut album, and was originally self-released in 1985 as 'Pentagram' - later to be renamed & released by Peaceville in 1993, after a long search for a suitable record label.

Funny you say that. When Death Row was formed in 1981 (before they would take on the Pentagram name after Bobby joined), Joe Hasselvander (drummer) basically said they were looking for a vocalist that sounded like Ian Anderson, but deliver it with Ozzy's register. And he already played with Bobby in Pentagram in 1978, so he knew just the guy.

Not all doom is slow 10 minute songs, many early doom bands like Pentagram, Trouble, St. Vitus, Pagan Altar and Witchfinder General had some great mid-tempo heavy bangers like this one.

This is before Doom Metal became what it is today, so it sounds more like what we would consider Hard Rock today. However, by the standards of music that existed when this was released, it was considered fast Doom Metal.

This is the style of music I grew up listening to as a teen in the 70s. It may have been rebranded since then but to my ears it is hard rock /heavy metal.

The main difference with hard rock of that time is that this was being played with a big muff sound full open and a fat bass that is not like in rock.
