Today's topic: pentatonic scale shredding! I show you a little practical example and some of my methods on how to come up with cool licks in this context. Practice backing track, tabs and Guitar Pro files are online on www.patreon.com/bernth :)

Your superimposed notes on top of your fingers is magnificent to players like me who do not have the fretboard memorized effortlessly. Thanks!

Everytime I see you play something inspires me to grab my guitar and play aswell, I appreciate your patience the trait of a great teacher... Thanks!

i love it when awesome players are also great teachers and master rhetoricians who can articulate sentences as brilliantly as they can blaze on the fretboard (its equally cool to listen to people who have a thick accent speak english more fluently than a harvard professor). i just stumbled upon this video accidentally but something tells me i'm going to spend the entire weekend checking out this channel !

Hi Bernth! I am a new subscriber. Glad I found you. Been back playing again for 2 years now after an unfortunate hand surgery left me unable to play for many years . Doing things right this time around and teaching my self theory also. Something I should've done long ago. Great lesson! If there is one thing I absolutely love is awesome patterns! Thank you for this! Well time to get at it!!!

Hi, Bernth Thanks for the lesson. I see guitar players doing tapping technique like that all the time, but I wasn't sure what they were really doing. And your lesson cleared that up for me. I found it to be very helpful. I have already been working on pentatonic scale in my scale book here at home this week, and when I seen this lesson I had to check it out. I really like the way you show the tabs and dot markers, it really helps to follow along. The Ibanez guitar you use is really hard to follow on, but the dot markers make up for that. I really like that guitar by the way. It awesome! Thanks Again Todd P.

Great lick and discussion. The funny thing when people shit on pentatonic scales and I ask if they like Dimebag they rarely realize he was almost all pentatonic and blues shred. Rusty Cooley plays tons of pentatonic shred too. It’s a very versatile scale especially if there are a lot of complex harmonies underlying it.

It's also a matter of the size of your hand - the stretch for 3 nps pentatonic required is very awkward for medium sized hands.

1:00 in. Okay, I'm going to subscribe to your channel. Thanks. Wow, great lesson! I love Pentatonic. ...but I like Metal too so this is really good. What do you think of this... I've been experimenting with splitting the Locrian mode into two separate pent scales...in C major one pent being BDEFA (return to octave) and the second being BCDFG (return to octave). It seems to work well giving sound that rests solidly in the seventh mode and works well with the chords I build from each respective pents. It gives two distinctly different sounds to the Locrian. What do you think of this and maybe have you ever seen others do something along this line. Thanks.

Hello Doug! Thanks a lot for sharing your concept, great to hear about that! Mixing the system of heptatonic scales with pentatonic scales is a great idea and I'd love to hear a composition of yours where you utilize these patterns! I made a long lesson about modal pentatonics on Patreon a couple months ago and will definitely feature this topic on here again too - thanks for the input and for sharing your approach :)
