I was never keen on the original either, but this one blew me away when it came out (it was released roughly the same time as 'The Prayer', and both impressed the heck out of me with the way they layered them). There's a live of this from their Hollywood Bowl concert last year, and there's very little difference to it. They REALLY upped their game during the lockdowns, and have all honed their craft to perfection. Also, I agree with what you said at the end, and PTX are very good at putting these messages into a lot of their videos. It doesn't need to be a special occasion to tell someone you love them ❤

This was definitely an upgrade. I did love the song when it came out, Stevie Wonder is such a great singer/songwriter...but like so many songs of that era, it got overplayed and lost my love. But this just renewed it. I'm glad you found you liked the way PTX renewed this. That wall of sound was awesome!!

I love the crunchy dissonance in this song with the rich 5-part harmony. Some of the highest notes were actually contributed by Kevin, who has an amazing falsetto voice. I've always loved the few songs where they "pull the goalie" and go with five singers and no beatboxing.

It always amazes me just how full and powerful the voices of 5 people can sound. The harmonies in this, especially toward the end, are almost frighteningly good! And there are videos of them doing this song on live TV for the Ellen show and Today, and they sound just as full there too.

Five (pent) part harmony hence 'Pent'atonix. I saw you liking this one. I do too and I felt like you did about the original. The video is special too. It's like their cover of Elvis' "Can't Help Falling in Love With You." I really dislike the original, but I LOVE their version. Thanks for a nice reaction.

The video also had the double meaning of the pandemic. The only way to reach our loved ones for awhile was phone, video chat etc. That hit hard at the time it came out. They interpreted it to go with the world as we live it.

When I first heard this I thought it had too much reverb and I still prefer the live versions. As for the original song, it's been covered so often and I've heard so many versions over the decades that I'm not sure I remember the original. I do know you are not alone in thinking it's a bit sickly sweet. Stevie Wonder wrote this for a movie and was going for an "easy listening" sound instead of his signature funk. It did win an Oscar, though. And when I heard it again in this PTX version it ended up stuck in my head for weeks. Anyone who can write a song that doesn't even rhyme and still have it be an earworm deserves some credit.

The occasional songs without beatboxing (and I do love me some KO beatboxing) are such super-harmonic experiences… I don’t think you’ve heard their original’Run to You’, a much earlier example of their homophonic sound. How they took Stevie Wonder’s song and turned it into a Christmas-y song is typical for them, for sure. It’s particularly heart tugging when taken in the context of the Covid times when we were all so separated, emphasizing that important message, like you said, of I love you and reaching out for that connection. I’d love to see you react to Superfruit, as others have mentioned. Besides their album, they have some Evolution of- style for Rhianna, Beyoncé, and Lady Gaga… and the 2 part Hip-Hop Goes Broadway… Superfruit isn’t quite as family-friendly so they have a bit more leeway in their content. It’s all good fun, even though they are focusing on other side-projects now and not continuing Superfruit.. we’ll worth its own rabbit hole of joy.

Kinda new to your channel and thought I would suggest looking at some Home Free videos. A country A Capella group that has skills much like PTX. There are tons of songs to choose from covering several genres. Look forward to seeing you reacting to them should you choose to. Best of luck.

Great reaction! If you like the 5-part, no-beatbox sound, you can also get that from their cover of Mad World, which is absolutely gorgeous. They also sing 5-part harmony in their “lightbulb songs.” In their live performances, there’s one number that they sing where they put their microphones down, take our their earpieces, and the entire venue goes silent to hear just their voices with nothing added. “Light in the Hallway,” “Run To You,” and “My Heart With You” (two originals and a cover-ish) are songs that they have performed in this way.

As a Pentaholic, every cover that they do, is NOT a cover, it's an upgrade. Love them and thanks for the reaction. I'd like to suggest four songs that you might be shocked to hear but I am sure you'll love it ... even other rappers love them. Not a fan? The song was a monster 1984 hit. Multi-Platinum and Peaked #1 for several weeks top of 20 charts around the world - a record.. One of Motowns biggest selling singles and it's MOST selling UK single until lately. Stevie Wonders BEST SELLING single ever. Academy Award winner. Golden Globe winner. and Multi Grammy nominated. It's actually INSULTING you're making that comment or even reacting and OBVIOUSLY only doing so for the PTX fan views. No doubt you can't name ANY Stevie Wonder song, especially one you LIKE, and especially since you claim to be a "rapper" and don't qualify as a gay man from the 1980's. Dude's released 23 albums since the 1960's including not just singing and writing but composing and producing including the famous TONTO synth - first and largest in the world. While fucking BLIND.

My honest reaction has clearly upset you but I haven’t said anything disrespectful about the artistry, creatives or anyone involved. I simply don’t care for the song.
