No prime lenses? The four lenses that you mention here are actually quite interesting, but zooms with a little bit less aperture are slightly less expensive and less heavy and give a larger range, especially if you do have some prime lenses as well.

I know this is pretty old, but being a Pentax guy, I really appreciate these kinds of videos. I've stuck with Pentax since the 70's for the simple reason, all of my lenses work on all of my cameras :). I hope you'll do a K-3, K-3 ii, K-3 iii episode like this. I've really enjoyed my K-3 ii and hope more people will find these videos to bring out the best in their photography.

Yes, some of my lenses are also pre-autofocus. But they are a little bit harder to use, so there is some point in getting newer lenses that support camera side F-Stop and Autofocus.

I have always admire your work but this presentation puts you ahead and above the rest in my humble estimation. This is the first and only K-1 tutorial out there, so for armatures like myself, who has just migrated to a pro-camera it is a feat of considerable note. Just yesterday I called Pentax simply to find out how to switch function screens. If you were selling this video I would have been compelled to buy it. I have SDP , Lightroom and will be getting the PS book as soon as it is completed. Thank ya, thank ya , Thank you!

Rick , if you ever have any questions about your Pentax camera, I would recommend you join up over at Pentaxforums.com. Ask a question over there and the friendly folk will climb over each other trying to help.
@MrDrmorbid8 жыл бұрын
LOL @ "friendly". That place is turning into a cult and if you have a dissenting opinion and you're not a site supporter, get ready for tons of abuse, then one of them complains and you get banned if you aren't a site supporter. That's how they keep it friendly there. It's the same nonsense over and over with all the apologists and 9.0/10 reviews for everything Pentax. Why do you think most of the major reviewers, Tony included, Kai Wong (despite being a Pentax fan), and others LOVE provoking Pentax fans?

Same here, I never experienced any so call abuse there, and no, I am not one of those "site supporter". You may have ran into those bad people in a group, but every group has bad apples. About the majors reviewers for Pentax, I agree what they said about Pentax's weakness, I didn't get provoked or blindly supporting Pentax. Every brand has their own weakness.

Great tutorial. One item I noticed. You mentioned if you want to change from using the directional pad from changing focusing points to the other options, you said switch to live view. You can also hit the small button above the 4 way directional pad, and it will switch the 4 way to the other mode. Hit it again, and you can change your focusing points again.

Nice work Tony. This and other similar Pentax cameras have a heap of features - more than can be covered in a 1 hr video- which never make the headline reels and it takes a while to understand all the various uses. I particularly like the feature new to the K-1 which allows the info screen (the quick access menu) to be customised to include all the settings I regularly use. Thanks for making a Pentax camera tutorial. It's great to see this marque getting some attention

Excellent tutorial, so many points given clear explanation, thank you for putting this together. It is a fantastic resource for anyone with a K-1. Really appreciated. I followed one of your articles explaining how we can get by without filters to create motion blur (smooth water) and lower noise by averaging multiple shots - composite imaging. Pentax K-1 offers a built-in feature to achieve this: Press the top four way controller button (shutter controls) The second from right icon takes you to Multi-exposures modes. Here yo have access to composite modes, drop down into one and access parameters adjustment via the info button. Detailed information on page 60 of the K-1 manual. All self explanatory when you find the multi exposure button, and a fantastic feature.

Many thanks for taking the time to make this Tony...as an FYI at 35:50, if you want the four way controller to change back to WB control etc press the Change AF/Card slot button just above it, it toggles the four way controller between the two modes as an alternative to switching to live view. See page 52 of the user manual for more info.

Tony, thank you for the helpful K-1 tutorial. Turning on auto-ISO (ISO button + green button) is not "weird and counter-intuitive", it's very Pentaxian. The green button is your "set-to-auto/reset/auto-mode" button. For example when shooting in Manual mode, it will revert aperture, shutter and ISO to whatever the camera would pick in P mode. Or it will auto-meter for you with a manual lens, etc. So press ISO and auto-green button and of course you get auto-ISO. :)

Silly not to read manuals. Many gadgets are designed to fall back into a cripple mode (rather than not work at all) just for people who never find out how to use them properly - in the case of the K-1 the "green button" puts you into a cripple mode which works as a compromise. I would not spend $2000-3000+ on something like this and have it only work like a phone camera.

Had this camera for 3 years and tens of thousands of shutter cycles. I still learned some neat tidbits from this video, thank you, Mr. Northrup! I especially appreciate the even tone that avoids the bashing, or almost as common, the glorifying that my favorite camera line sometimes engenders when you find Pentax on KZbin! I know this video had a little age on it, but one point you may want to add to the strengths at landscape this camera demonstrates, it loves either the Tamron 90 or the Pentax 100 macros. IQ is great with both (really just landscape at a different scale), and the articulating screen sure makes awkward camera angles so simple to work with. Maybe add one of these to your lens recommendations?

REALLY appreciate the time and effort you put into this!! My Nikon D5300 turned over 182k on the Shutter Count today, in less than 4 years. "In a perfect world..." it'd be nice to go full frame. My last "full frame" camera was also a Pentax...ME Super. I've got a soft spot (and a Tokina 35-70 zoom from the ME Super!) for Pentax. Financial realities may well push me to a K-3 or another Nikon, maybe a D7200 or a D5500. (Nothing about the D5600 that would prompt me to spend more.) Definitely appreciate the lens suggestions too! It's _very_ helpful to know, exactly, "who" makes the lens so I can save a little $$ there. Many, many thanks! Looking forward to your hands-on review of the K-1 Mk2 when it comes out! I've heard of one person who says they saw a demo' of the "improved" PixelShift feature and said it appeared to work as advertised. Now...if I could just find a Pentax dealer in the south-central Pa. area, just for my own "how does it feel in my hands?" test. Happy to order something through your online shop.

good k-1 usage overview 👍👍 how about a roundup video about lenses from different manufacturers, say a 24-70 f2.8 full frame or 70-200 f2.8 or ultra wides say 15-30 now that Pentax is also in the ff fray. This will help new buyers deciding their brand on the basis of lens choice. then you can also have a prime lens roundup sometime later. Rock-solid, weatherproof, OVF and in comparison to actual competitors DIRT CHEAP, Only problem in nowadays mainly no support for third.party lenses like Sigma and Tamron, but a few nice Samyangs, Irix, Laowa, and a huge amount of used lenses (there also Sigma and Tamron). Deze Dezines I bought the d500 a couple of months ago because I was so frustrated about action photography with Pentax that I lost pleasure in taking pictures. Now that I have both camera's I'm starting to like it again. If you van afford the K-1, just do it. I really love the D500 for my action photography (mostly dogs) but I find the IQ of the pentax better.

Awesome video. I wonder if there's any way to shoot a smaller sized RAW file like some Canon models allow? I love the looks of this camera, but I don't like the idea of having to store 36 MP of image data for every single image I take.
