Shooting street this is the kind of lens I would keep at F8 or F11 and pre focused at 15 meters 100% of the time. Making the trade a little IQ for small size. On the tiny EM Super this would make a very tight little street warrior. IMHO

Tried one. Loved the quality and feel. The biggest problem was the damned aberrations. Other than that, sharp.

Great review. I have this lens too. I just pulled it out to see what it could do and found the 60cm close focus frustrating my tendency to be closer. The usual mode for Pentax is to have the minimum focus mirroring the focal length. So it should focus to 40cm by rights. It can pull out great pictorial quality and the detail is created from its tonal discrimination. Your pictures demonstrated that quality well. It’s an odd duck because Pentax over compromised. The replacement optic that gets the job done would be the SMC Pentax-m 35mm f2.8. It is a better synthesis of qualities that never feels compromised. The 40mm f2.8 is a great lens for monochrome because of its tonality. Colour likes contrasty lenses that simplify and shorten the tonal palette.

I had that lens on my Mx film camera for almost 20 years. When switched to digital, sold it immediately because its limitations were clearly visible. Between f2,8 and f5,6 my sample, was quite mediocre and I was happy to sell it to a collector.

Aye, my copy was swapped out within a month. I would describe it as mushy. When I think of the other lenses in the ‘m’ lineup, the 40mm can’t compete. Good to see you laddie. ;o)

They are fun and easy to use and maintain, They don't have all of the vintage flair that others do. They look more modern in their rendering and have way less sample variation. I think Brannon said they were the first lenses designed by computer calculations. super consistent in color and rendering between most of them, This one and the zooms are a little odd.

As a Pentax user since 1986, my suggestions are: 35/f3,5 , 135/f2,5 and 200/f3,5 Takumars, 28mm f3,5 K series, 50mm f4 Macro M and 85mm f2 M.

Don't know why you bothered to feature this lens just to slam it. 40mm is a kind of 'dead' area for a lens anyway so why buy it in the first place. Another nobody trying to be a reviewer?
