The outpouring of the Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost was not only impactful for empowering and transforming individual believers, but also for restoring or reversing two particular historical events in the Old Testament.
The first event is the Babel tower. In Genesis 11, the people were unified under a sinful motivation to rebel against God and built the Babel tower.
God punished them by confusing their common language so that they couldn’t understand each other. At Pentecost, God reversed what He had done over 2,000 years ago. God brought the scattered nations that had different tongues and dialects and caused them to understand each other. On this occasion, they came together and were unified for the correct reason, to praise and exalt the God of the Universe.
The second event is the death of 3,000 people at Mount Sinai in Exodus 32. 50 days after Exodus, the Israelites celebrated the first Pentecost at Mount Sinai. When God gave the Torah to Moses on Mount Sinai, the people were worshipping the golden calf. On that day about 3,000 people were killed as punishment for their sins. When the Spirit of God was given on the day of Pentecost, the people repented, and about 3,000 people were saved.
We normally think that God can do nothing for past events in history.
But actually, the Spirit of God can reverse past events to correct what went wrong for the sake of His name and glory. This is a reason that we need to ask God to fill us, our families and our workplaces with His Spirit.
