Hello, I really wanted to thank you for this video that I so hoped to find on the internet because I have this model of mechanism (shimano 9 speeds). Being defective because it has not been used for twenty years, I carry out repairs as a total novice thanks to the videos. This one fell from the sky like an angel! A thousand thank you dear sir! With help from this excellent video, I have disassembled & reassembled my 6510 (flight deck compatible) right control set. It is about 90% similar to the 6501. The internal shift componets up to min 1:15 are slightly different, then the ratching barrel assembly starting at min 8:25 is slightly different also. My advice to 6510 owners; don't disassemble the barrel assembly nor the pawls with springs assemblies (unless broken). A key assembly issue, is at min 12:19 the spring catch must align in the slot (with the small circle just above slot), then you must rotate the the barrel assembly about 90 degrees counter clockwise to put tension on spring. Look at video at min 13:10 and match the componet location (but remember the 6510 has a slightly different assembly). Also he installed the Flight Deck unit 180 degrees out of alignment, but his flat cable is broken, so no issue for him. Also one last item, use a zip tie or wire to hold assembly in place ( to stop it from rotating) while installing plastic cover.

Hi B.R. Field. I disassembled my right-side 6510 and found that the C-shaped spring like the one he installs from 0:29 to 0:44 has its hook end broken off (I found the broken-off piece). I assume that spring is the one that returns the brake lever back to the right after a down-shift. Do you know of a way to repair something like that, or if there's any hope of buying a replacement spring? I feel 95% sure that I need to buy a whole replacement 6510, but it seems like such a shame for the sake of that one little broken spring. Thanks.
@BRField3 жыл бұрын
@@chrissatterlee4287 That C- shaped spring is critical, you can try the internet for a broken (from something else) 6510 right-side and use one from it. I have not seen 6510 OEM factory parts like these any bikes shops. You also may be able to contact a watchmaker to get some ideas on how to fix it and get a replacement.
@chrissatterlee42873 жыл бұрын
@@BRField Thanks. I decided to buy a working one on eBay for $100 (+shipping+tax). The "for parts only" ones don't say what is broken, and I doubt the sellers even know. The watchmaker idea is good, but I just decided that I'd rather throw money at it than time. The broken 6510 has around 30k miles on it, and I'm a frequent shifter (it's a tandem bike). It would have been fun to see if I could have put it back together again with the help of this video, but there's no guarantee of that either. I really appreciate your help, and I think your original comment is sure to help other 6510 owners!

Thanks for the videos, great job, helped me out of a jam with rebuilding my RH brifter (pardon the pun), now works a treat. Noticed that the retainer for the large 'C' shaped spring has a piece broken off at 0.47 secs into the video. Did you manage to get the shift down mechanism to work even though the spring wasn't properly retained? A few extra tips that I learnt through 2 days of trial and error - At 15.55 the spring for the double gear pawl needs to be pushed into the slot below the round hole in the plastic cover as the round hole is used to retain the black plastic cover later in the video. At 17:11 the pawl slipping a gear during rebuild can be prevented by cable tying the down shifter to the spigot body, you will need to remove the cable tie when fitting the large lever later. The large lever spring at 19:26 needs to be pushed into its housing for maximum spring tension and lever return when shifting up. The screw fixing the large lever to the small lever must be tight or will loosen and fall out over time. To prevent a broken front cover when removing, push it up with your thumb and gently prize open the top retainer, then push down to remove the bottom retainer.

Yea i have the same problem, im reassembling it now the way this guy is doing. Maybe it somehow puts the return spring in place when shifting idk, if you know how to fix it let me know haha
@jonanathow43263 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I think the spring has to be preloaded about a quater turn and hooked to the next little thingy on the inside of the base, I put the lever upside down, put the spring in, looped a piece of strong sewing thread around the end of the spring, put the base in the lever(still upside down, so the spring stays in place) only so far I could still see the spring, so I could pull on the thread and hook the spring where it belongs, and then push the two parts together, and hold it tight untll the nut is back in place.

Brilliant video. You make it look easy, but even with your super clear video it still took me many hours to do. The comments, particularly by liveonyourknees & the replies are important to correct a small error (spring location in plastic housing hole 16:11) and a more critical omission (tensioning return spring to small lug 19:35). Without your video there's no way I could have successfully reassembled it. It's a very tricky re-build, requiring much patience, good light & good eyesight. My recommendation is to disassemble it only if you absolutely have to. My ST-4400 (Tiagra) wouldn't downshift after the M4 crosshead screw attaching the downshift lever to the brake lever came loose & dropped out somewhere. It is 20 years old, so decided to strip down & clean. It has been used very regularly in all that time. I'm amazed by how little wear there is and after reassembling, it works fine again. Such a shame Shimano do not provide an exploded parts diagram. However, your video has rescued it, saving the planet from another unnecessary throwaway. Thank you so much.

Thanks for your in depth comment with those time signatures. I am struggling to re-assemble mine.. there is a larger 340 degree spring sitting at the bottom of the stack- he puts it back in at the very beginning. I am wondering if that spring must hook onto the little flange of the thin washer that goes in right before? Otherwise this is amazing effort, but without a voice-over to describe the actual actions, it's still pretty difficult to follow (for me). I can feel I may give up and then what? Send to someone who can assemble it? dunno.. Best to all Peter (Paris, France)
@adrianbeck58152 жыл бұрын
@@Peter-gn8pj I Hooked it on the small flange, as you said. It could also locate in the cut-out section of the spacer that slides next down the shift. I have a photo that I can send if you give me an email address. I have to say that after about a month of use, it wouldn't downshift again. I disassembled, lubricated & tried again, but it wouldn't work. I suspect that the springs need re-tensioning. As it's such a time-consuming job, I decided to buy some new shifters. Second hand off ebay, as my bike is 20+ years old and used as a workhorse. Shimano Sora 9 speed. Surplus to someone else's needs. They have so far worked fine. I still have the Tiagra's. One day, when I have nothing else to do, I might try to fix them again. None of the components were broken. All the best with it.

@@adrianbeck5815 Hey Adrian, Thanks for the input! I contacted the dude who repairs these just to double check he wouldn't do 9 speeds and he confirmed- he said he just isn't able to succeed... and frankly that's good enough for me. I bought a pair of Microshift 3/9 levers which are supposed to work with Shimano. I actually am receiving them today. Hopefully the compatability is good! I'm keeping the Ultegra shifter for whatever - maybe a group of us can resurrect one good shifter out of many parts just for the fun of it...but I do know that the unknowns are too varied for me to spend any more time trying to fix it. I have 3 x 9 speed. My question: What does it mean when people write 2/3 x 9 speed. Can you adjust the shifter? Can I also buy a shifter that is described with 2 x 9 speed? How do I know? Thanks for your helpful video. I tried this myself to the left and right shifter, but there were some spacers/washers between the cross head screws. After reasemmling the right shifter is now "sticky". Pushing on the little lever can move the break lever to. Upshifting results in a downshift :/ My concern is, that I might have mixed up the washers. Or it could it be the spring at the front? In your video it looked easy to mount, but mine were shaped with the hooks bent a little bit inwards so they slipped over this ridge on the counterpart. Do they have to be preloaded?
@mrkrk70003 жыл бұрын
Front spring should be preloaded by the smaller ridge, not that wide and thick one. It's visible at 19:40. As someone mentioned in the diffrent video with assembling ST-6700 you first insert the lever into the main shaft only partly so you can have access for the spting to preload it. Then use a fishing line to hook it or small flat screwdriver and then preload it by smaller ridge about 1/4 of a turn. To make a life easier you can bend back the hook of the spring more backwards so it can catch the ridge more easily, it will not affect anything
