The Last Samurai is a bad example because the white dude is not the eponymous Last Samurai. The literal poster boy teaches the Samurai how to use the rifles they purchased and are unfamiliar with how to use. He befreinds them and they all die horrible deaths on a devestating loss but the MC goes to their Lord to testify on their behalf so they will recieve honorable burials and their families will be taken care of. The guy on the right iirc is supposed to be Lois Frouis a portguese missionary whose name I am certain I have butchered, apologies, but he is actually an influential person at that time. Admittedly, he was far more important to the Portugese than to the Japanese. Yasuke on the other hand was a retainer and was in Japan for only a year. That said, I dont have a problem with Assassins Creed, whose tagline is literally "history is our playground", taking liberties and doing more with Yasuke than actually was. I do have a problem that both the characters on Greece were Greek, both characters in valhalla were nordic, but now that we finally get the Sengoku Japan Assasins game they shaft Japanese Men out of the spotlight in their own country in favor of the one named Black guy in their entire history until WW2. But all of that, all of that pales in comparison to thise fucking prices holy shit dude. Fuck Ubisoft. EDIT: Unironically, GREECE would have made a million times more sense to have playable Black Assassin's given that Athens had MANY slaves as well as the surrounding Grecian society and they had multiple trade routes with Kush and Aksom (aethiopiea at the time unless I have my timeline fucked) as well as Egypt and through both access to Sub Saharan Africa. The issue here is that it’s an incredibly controversial decision that should have erred on the side of immersion and authenticity like previous AC games have done. Yasuke as a side character or DLC would have been way more appropriate than one of two main protagonists (the other being a female) for a game taking place in FEUDAL JAPAN, and the first Japanese AC game that fans have been clamoring to get for ages. By themselves, this wouldn’t be much of an issue, but it’s *very* obviously done for the sake of “diversity” which is beyond disingenuous. Why not save a black protagonist for an AC game that takes place in Africa involving authentic African legends/folklore? Why must they always get the sloppy seconds of more popular countries’ folklore? Are African stories not worth telling/making? It’s really not that hard a concept, yet so many people are being intentionally obtuse…

I don't think people would mind a game that has Yasuke as a main character with a more historical focus. The issue is the climate we currently live in and the motives behind the choice of Yasuke. Are you really going to tell me, out of the choice of thousands of actual Japanese samurai, they chose to have the one black samurai for a non-diversity based reason? Even in Nioh, i thought it was an odd choice to have a white Samurai as the protagonist; though I know he was a historical figure as well. That was made by a Japanese studio though, so it was their decision. I think the controversy is more related to the time we're in as opposed to telling a story about a black samurai, because I don't think there was as much controversy with Nioh coming out. I think people are just sick of forced inclusion; black Anne Boleyn, black Cleopatra, black vikings, black Achilles, I'm sure there are more examples. Could we get a story that focuses on African history and mythos instead of appropriating other cultures? Like a game about Shaka Zulu or something?
@chucklebouf53795 ай бұрын
The difference would be because Nioh was made because the Japanese thought it was interesting and aren't pushing some weird erasure agenda. Ubisoft is. They don't have an earnest interest in putting Yasuke here, they knew they could just make waves and check their boxes by doing so.
@1ProAssassin5 ай бұрын
I think the opposite. The less historical focus the less they'll care about Yasuke. They could've made it entirely about demons and Yasuke could've been a demon hunter with skills from the church and shinto shrine due to his unique background and ppl would've loved it. They could've made it a steampunk samurai robot thing and people would've thought it was cool. Unless you mean a historical game specifically and entirely devoted to him as a standalone IP then yeah they wouldn't mind as much unless it was telling lies while focusing on being historically accurate. The issue is that ppl have wanted a Samurai AC game. Then they choose one of the most famous Japanese eras and culturally important times where Japan was distinctly unique and isolated. Then they choose the foreign black guy whose claim to fame is being an oddity who wasn't an actual samurai and some made up Japanese woman who still isn't a samurai. Neither being a great representation for the era outside of being an easy gateway to talking about western values around racism and sexism, which is boring.

Nioh: Makes Yauske the "Obsidian Samurai", and everyone loves it. AC Shadows: Makes the main samurai character Yauske, and everyone hates it. You know what the difference is? Intention. Nioh made Yauske a samurai because it fits the entire over the top historical fantasy setting of the game. Its much cooler seeing a giant black guy in samurai armor smashing Yokai with a massive axe, than simply serving as a sword bearer for Nobunaga like he probably did in reality. Nioh is filled with exaggerated versions of legendary people from Japanese history. None of them are particularly accurate to the real historical accounts, because that wouldn't make for nearly as fun a game. Plus, the game is full of Yokai, which also don't really exist. But its clear that Ubisoft only made the main player character a black samurai because of modern day politics. Not because its historically accurate, or because it makes the story more interesting, or anything like that. Because if they wanted that, there are a million actual Japanese characters they could have chosen as their main character. But instead, they chose the ONE black guy that MIGHT have been a samurai. Plus, according to people that worked on the game, the main character was originally going to be Japanese, and it wasn't until very recently that they changed him to Yauske. That makes their intentions INCREDIBLY suspicious. And, just like with the little Black Mermaid, and all the other race swaps over the lest few years, the criticism deflection effect is a very nice bonus. Because no one can hear you complain about the real problems when everyone else is screaming about racism.

Game studios need millions of dollars to develop a game, but they prefer to borrow that money from cheap sources like ESG companies. ESG companies are something like banks, but their interest rate is very low, BUT in order to get a loan from them and have your interest rate so low, your inclusivity in your game needs to be high. Thats why Sweet Baby Inc. companies exist, because companies like ESG ones employ them in order to make sure that the inclusivity is present in the game upon release. Its twisted, but game studios still undergo this procedure as it is still profitable.

I will agree though that people seem to think that Yasuke was much more important than he actually was. He was never named a daimyo, nor was a front line combat nor commanded soldiers; he was just one of Nobunaga's closest buddies. It's weird, but I have to admit, for once I agree with the deranged things that inhabit Twitter, there is no reason to hate on Yasuke being shown as a samurai. 1- You shouldn't expect historical accuracy from a game about reliving the past through a machine and DNA. 2 - assassin's creed series was never one to respect historical fact, like middle east themed assassin in 1800s London? 3- You still get to play as a samurai (which was what everyone one wanted) 4 - Yasuke did exist and serve Nobunaga so him being a samurai is still within the realm of possibilities that COULD have happened. As asmongold predicted, gamers are hating on the game (rightfully so) FOR THE WRONG REASONS. 130$ That's crazy, I could almost get 5 other game for the same price, heck during summer sales that are coming I could get 10 other games for that price, monster hunter is 9.99$ on sales that's 13 games... As a Japanese, I was very interested in African culture. And so I did research to find traces if there were Africans in Japan in the periods between 1500's and 1700's. In the National Library, where you can find all the documents from the history of Japan, a bit like X-Files with the files etc. Gathered in one place. All in one place. I don't know how to say it in English, but hey, I'll do my best. I found documents about Yasuke, but not much, just a page that talks about his history and the letter he wrote before he left Japan, it was said that Nobunaga found a person chained by the Portuguese Who has the power Stronger than a bear And that he had the ability to be able to knock down 10 people at once. near the harbor and Since Nobunaga was a person of great curiosity he wondered why he was chained. Asking lots of questions to the slaver. He decided to wash him He felt A little bad to see a man treated like this and to see him so dirty But in fact He understood that his skin was black And that's where the first Japanese to meet an African. And so nobunaga. decided. to keep him as a bodyguard. since he was very very strong and he never separated from nobunaga. and nobunaga. asked him a question, what's your name? l 'African said to him, "I don't have a name. So I'll give you one. Your name will be Yasuke. And now that I have set you free, you are no longer a slave. You are my bodyguard. And you will always be close to me. Now that you are with me. There will be no one to humiliate you. Because you are my bodyguard. And little by little, we'll get to know each other. Nobunaga gave him everything he needed, like a house, food, bath and everything. And that's why Yasuke was so fascinated by Nobunaga and he was so loyal, the loyalty of a warrior Who never left a second Of Nobunaga.From time to time, he liked to talk to him. even in private. not every time. because nobunaga was literally the highest status of the country of japan nobunaga was a military commander of feudal japan from the sengoku period to the azuchi-momoyama period in japan he is one of the three greatest heroes of the sengoku period.He was a busy man, and yes, Yasuke was there, but not outside, close to Nobunaga. Nobunaga killed himself during the Honnō-ji Incident in 1582, when his retainer Akechi Mitsuhide ambushed and trapped him in a temple in Kyoto, upon realizing he was surrounded, he committed seppuku. Nobunaga was succeeded by Toyotomi Hideyoshi, who along with Tokugawa Ieyasu completed his war of unification shortly afterward.Yasuke was there, he wanted to fight at the side of his beloved Daimyō But Nobunaga don't want to see Yasuke tied up with a chain like a slave again So Nobunaga decide to give him freedom.For black person Do you know what that means, that's crazy, you know that's? Wow, that's beautiful And then when he got there, man to him. To save Nobunaga family first So he gave him a boat. So he can escape. He made a promise, To him. To live his life happily, He was invited. You should go back to your country And promise me To have a good life And then he disappeared, Some people say he was returned to his own country. He left as a Christian monk and I love this story, I really do. Nobunaga is the only one daimyo to have freed a slave. a samurai,no but he was a Yojimbo. He was considered more of a guest than a samurai. And according to my father, he tells me he's not a samurai. And that, too, I agree with. As if you invited someone and the person who invited him was a really high person in society. And that he had privileges that were real privileges Luxurious by Nobunaga I am Japanese and my wife is African, but she is no longer in this world. I wanted to share my opinion about the game. ubisoft mentioned the accuracy of the story in the Assassin's Creed series. But the problem is that the setting like structures, houses, nature, objects - everything is bizarre and not Japanese but Chinese And the protagonist, Naoe, doesn't look Japanese but has more the ethnicity of Vietnamese or Korean or Thai.she looks like liu kang swap gender And this is the problem I have than others. If the idea is to create a game in the correct environment and Japanese traditions settings And that has to be done properly, in my opinion. The problem with Yasuke, I think, is that we Japanese expected more of a representation of a famous shinobi or samurai to represent the land of the rising sun. And I think if we wanted an African protagonist, I would have liked it more if it had been set in a traditional Mozambican environment with an African protagonist. More importantly, this is the first time that Ubisoft has decided to use a main character as a historical figure rather than a secondary one. And I think that's what created the controversy that's going on right now. We Japanese love African culture and I lived 10 years in Africa in Senegal, Kenya, Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia and I speak French too and if you really want to know what is the real beautiful story between nobunaga and yasuke ask to me and I will tell you the truth story about this. I'm more concerned about being able to fight against an issue that is much more important than the ownership of their country in video games. Years ago, for business meeting, I met a woman named Sachi Schmidt-Hori who wrote a book called The Tales of Idolized Boys: Male-Male Love in Medieval Japanese Buddhist Narratives and Ubisoft choose her as a historical writer but the problem is she is writing a book on a religious and the DSM-V subject I think it would be better to focus on this subject because it is very important and if you want of de preuve you can please watch the video of the asmongold talking about Sachi Schmidt-Hori AND the title of the video called "Ubisoft has officially lost their mind. ."

The problem isn’t just over 100 dollars, as someone that was interested in Japanese history years back and particularly focused on nobunaga, yasuke is someone nobunaga bought from the portoghese out of excitement over the new and foreign however he did treat yasuke really well and trusted the man, however he never did give him any actual significant tittle apart from being a non ranked body guard do to his stature and physic being way bigger and taller and the one to personally carry a lot of nobunga’s weapons around where he went, nobunaga’s reasoning for him to be a body guard of his was Preaty simple: if i have this mountain of a man with me people will probably think twice in doing dangerous actions against my person. He wasn’t a samurai but he was allowed to carry weapons as an unofficial body guard to him, and for those that don’t know being a samurai is a tittle mostly inherited but it can be given to people that aren’t, but very rarely this happened and this is mostly to people that distinguished them selfs like toyotomi hideyoshi which was just a peasant that made sandals for nobunaga that however distinguished himself later in military action as such being granted the tittle of samurai. The reason to be worried about this isn’t the presence of yasuke per se but the fact that even outside the game people are trying to do revisionist history about it by changing stuff like wikipedia saying he totaly was a samurai when he wasn’t, my proof? Various books including u known a book that was written by another foreigner that was around the court of nobunaga at the time, also for the Wikipedia changing shit just use the wayback machine to confirm what I am saying it’s Preaty easy to do, like just go back a month of two and text there will already be different. The problem isnt yasuke but the revisionism that they are trying to pull even outside the game.

"interested in japanese history" and "Samurai title mostly inhereted" doesn't match my dude. Pre 1600 and especially Sengoku Jidai is one of the prime example of lower class citicens becoming samurai (Guess the period Yasuke and Hideyoshi lived in). The only period you had to be born in high society to become samurai is post Hideyoshi. Which is ironic. I think these rules were lightened around 1800s and you could buy a rank of samurai once more, but it was expensive.

I said mostly, mostly dosnt mean what u said aka had to be nobility to be samurai hell, right after after I gave the exemple of toyotomi but I also might add that it wasn’t a super regolar accurance it was rare to be granted the tittle of samurai but it happened however my point is in most historical sources of the time, yasuke is at max granted tittle of bushi, someone that is considered a warrior but not a samurai, later the word bushi and samurai became synonyms cause of the toyotomi and Tokugawa reforms in class where to be a bushi u also had to be related to a family of the samurai class , being a samurai entailed more than just being a warrior, it came with way more stricter obligations , oaths and also land it its Preaty much was elevation to a nobility status, which by historical source yasuke wasn’t,so read In full before pulling akctually moment, i know of the restrictions imposed by toyotomi on the chance of becoming samurai also if we have to be real specific the Tokugawa after toyotomi Preaty much cemented that nobody could move from their social class. Also no in the 1800s the restrictions were not loosened much at all only after with the power struggle between the shogunate and the emperor started to brew that they started to be lax on who could consider themselves samurai

In the anime a Darker then black, Russian guy was presented as a huge black man. And as a Russian, I absolutely didn’t care about this, since I knew that this was their creative vision, and not an attempt to score ESG points. But if that were Netflix's movie, I'd be pissed.

@TNTspaz5 ай бұрын
@@BasketCase-rr7tx I think it's just the very idea of the day 1 DLC and presumed want for the DLC in the future. Justifying the upfront charge for it. It's pretty manipulative and most won't return for the DLC. Hence why they want the upfront charge. To avoid the drop off. You feel like you are getting a worse product for the cheaper price cause it excludes the day 1 DLC so you buy the more expensive one and they present it as if they are giving you a deal for the future DLC. When normally by the time you remember the DLC even exists. It'll be cheaper or given free somewhere. It's also normally just be a handful of extra missions that all suck. The value isn't there and they don't even make an attempt to provide details for what value they may be offering. Hence you just have to make assumptions about what content will come in the future. Someone's presumed value will always be more than the actual value. It's basically marketing 101. Ffs, they didn't even give a gameplay trailer before presenting these packages. Which is the most scummy part of it. It's kind of genius in a way cause they could literally provide nothing and nobody could do anything about it. They never gave any details. Games doing it for years doesn't justify the bad practice but it definitely allows them to normalize it.

@@TNTspaz I mean, if people buy the $130 edition and dont actually want the DLC then I would say they are idiots and thats not anyone's fault but their own. Youre also wrong about the size of the DLC. The Assasins Creed DLC is usually pretty substantial.

There's a historian of samurai and ninja literature named Don Roley that gives a very good breakdown of this Yasuke figure and the myths around him. I recommend giving it a watch. It's pretty sad to see that Yasuke lived as a token trophy and is being used in a similar way once again.

I actually give zero f*cks about a black character as a samurai, in the end they have creative liberty, they spent money it's their product. My only issue is with Ubisoft Quebec, they made Odyssey, and that's the only game which is far from AC, had the worst parkour, clunky as hell and didn't even have a hidden blade. The thing I don't understand is that if their goal was simply diversity; why they didn't just make a character that looked like they were from Southern japan, Kansai region, Ainu, or some other local island native from the southern region of Japan, you know, where the dark skinned Japanese people are from. I mean, I guess I do understand, it's DEI initiative that only ever seems to benefit a few certain groups of people and always aims to erode the diversity of Asians and white people.
@TheCursedCat19275 ай бұрын
Because we are talking about Ubisoft, who have proven time and time again, that they completely misunderstand how any of this works. Let alone, the talk about diversity is just bizzarre, because we are literally talking about Japan - like that in on itself is already a diverse region. And instead of actually using that fact to their advantage, Ubisoft are pulling their typical crap again. Not to mention, that using Yasuke isn't even an issue in on itself - it's how they are doing it. Yasuke could have been used perfectly as just an NPC, who we meet at the beginning of the game - make him the Brotherhood's agent, who was sent to Japan undercover to deliver the Japanesse Brotherhood informations and locations about Artifacts - and then just make him your ally, so that his actual history isn't thrown out the window (like Ubisoft are already doing), while keeping him a somewhat active member of the story. Like come on, Yasuke was literally just a minor footnote in the history of the entire region, and they make him into some major character here - but in the past Ubisoft used much more important historical figures, and they had no issue in giving them minor sidelined appereances...

This is diversity in the Californian meaning. There is no nuance in ethnicity or culture. All asians are the same in every way. You've seen one, you've seen them all, no need to add more. Africans and suburban Afro-americans? Also basically the same, right? And let's not forget that all europoids are icky.

@@Philip7710 Undercover as a slave. That's what happend in the actual history - he was a purtuguese slave, who was sent to Japan and bought by Nobunaga to be his servant. They could have reworked that into making Yasuke an undercover agent (not a spy), who was smuggled onto the ship and sent over there with informations regarding Artifacts located in Japan. I'm not saying he would be undercover all the time - only that he would have been sent to Japan as one. Then he would act like a normal NPC side-character, working with Naoe, just like Leonardo would with Ezio.

@@TheCheeseMovesSideways My friend, you just answered your own question. Ubisoft are doing it, because they are trying to pass it off as being a new standard - even tho even other developers and publishers in the industry are laughing them off about it. Add to that the fact, that Ubisoft is just straight up delusional, and you start to understand everything. Like heck, they truly believe that players "should get used to not owning the games they pay for" and that Skull & Bones - a f_ckin disaster of a project - is "a new AAAA type of game" just because they paid a ton of money to make it (meanwhile it lacks features and mechanics that are standard in AAA and even AA titles). Not to mention that their "AAAA" game "Skull & Bones" has essentially been a perfect example of how to not make a video game for the last 10 years straight, and the final product was just the final nail to that coffin...
