As a South African I can't help but feel sorry for Eddy Jones. He is an enormously good and successful coach with a track record that few can compare with. As a SA supporter I can admit of never being certain of the outcome of an England vs SA game as long as he's been coach. That includes the recent games up to and including Twickenham. Obviously he's not to blame for Englands form; especially against the top sides in the world. So why fire him now with the world cup looming? Is it because he's Aussie or is he just the most convenient scapegoat? The worst thing England can do now is to ditch Eddy Jones without someone better to replace him, and that's exactly what the RFU are doing.
@vernonrhoda82762 жыл бұрын
I hear you but he has never had the upper hand in cup rugby against the boks. Just didn't. It aint the coach thats the problem, it's england are simply not world beaters. They are good, and a good day, who knows. Cup rugby requires you to be solid and consistent. I'm hopeful for the boks this cup, because it feels like there is a consistency building there...and showing. England needs to get a damn english coach. Need this to grow the culture etc. etc. Nothing wrong with eddie, good caoch forsure, but that final margins you need, he cannot provide as an ozzy.
@lanceelliott11452 жыл бұрын
Saffer here..England needs a 100% overhaul of their front rowers. Once that's sorted the backs will function again. Their weak forwards makes things difficult for the backs, they are stuck between a defensive and offensive mindset = confusion and sloppy play. Are the Wngland forwards carrying a bit too much muscle for their frames ? Being big is important but there's a fine line between carrying tio much bulk and carrying moderately lean mass like the Boks. In a 50 minute game Eng firwards might be ok, but not 80. The Bulls were like that a few years ago. Scariest, biggest guys but always faded in the second half. If Eng can't find fresh front rowers, maybe get them to drop a few and up cardio- opinion. Good luck England 👍🏻.Ps: Only Frans Malherbe can eat all he likes and still dominate.

Nope England had an great chance in this world cup and Eddie knew that. He already had the team, he was just biding time. He didn't need to rebuild. So what, so England was't that hungry for W in between the world cup. But experience teams can lift their game when it counts and England only needs to do that for 3 games, of which they will most likely face Argentina, Wales and Australia with a tired opponent in the final. Ireland peaked too early again and France will need to beat SA, NZ or IRE consectuvely just to end up in the final. Borthwick is an Englishman that looks like he'll get the England squad to believe, add some dogged fighting spirit in the team so that they can grind out wins. So I can understand the RFU thinking, but it is a gamble to drop a tactical genius that historically excells in one off games. Essentially England need one great game like their 2019 semi-final but this one will be in the final. And they dropped the best guy for that. And will probably lose to Australia in the semi-final.

"Just because some grumpy old journalists and some miserable fans decided to get rid of him" - No Mr. Haskell, just because of some terrible selection choices, questionable tactical decisions, self-parody press conferences, a complete lack of genuine contrition and no signs of improvement (as distinct from, for example, Ian Foster and New Zealand). That's why. Eddie Jones has a particular skill which is to develop teams. What he is not capable of is sustaining that over the long term. Whether it's his management style which, over time, has a negative effect or whether it's his unwillingness to listen to anyone else, I can't say but it's clear from the last 2 years that England, led by Jones, is not the same quality team that won the World Cup semi-final in 2019.

After England lost the English supporters went from delusional 'we are expecting all' to walking out early from the game and turning on the England team at the drop of a hat. After chatting with them they acknowledged it and put it down to living in the moment rather than living in the history of the game no matter what come what may. To be honest I'd say why not. The coaching staff yes but not the main coach , there's a big difference. Jones has brought England nothing since world cup . No evolution . What I've seen is when he takes over he makes a huge positive influence for a couple of years , after that he seems to struggle. Maybe he's best at part of the coaching staff like with South Africa, who knows . His player picks are the other issue. Farrell is not a world class centre , not fast nor powerful in that position put with a past his prime tuilagi who may pull out a performance every now and again , it's not good enough . Billy v another past his best still being picked when we have some serious quality no.8s not being given.much of a chance. Mako can't scrummage against the very best , marler is the one to pick v south Africa etc etc etc. Since that world cup loss he changed, wanting to play more like South Africa, we haven't the players to play that way . The boks are from a gene pool all of there own lol that's why they're so good at what they do.

I keep reading that Smith & Farrell , Itoje are world class but their form of late suggests otherwise. Itoje has been world class but his form of late hasn't been. If Farrell isn't starting at 10 he's certainly not an international class 12. The premiership is behind the top 14 & since the addition of the South African sides the URC too. Time for a reality check.

I woke up at 2am last night wondering...about all the careers/players that EJ has inhibited. The chaos his dictatorship has caused. All those players and pretty much anyone in the prem will now have hope of breaking into the WC squad. This could be a real renaissance if it's managed in the right way. Hopefully Steve B will have 'learned' from EJ's mistakes and will develop something progressive with INTEGRITY a la Fabien Gaultier/Andy Farrell. Something lasting is what the English fans want. AND SO DO THE PLAYERS! Let's not forget them in all this! Haskell hasn't got a clue. Just a big gob. 73% success rate is just a stat without a soul. Means nothing.

James, you are spot on. Eddie got ousted because he stood up to the toxic British press. The fans were poisoned by said press. All international coaches respect Eddie Jones. (From a Springbok supporter).

Haskell is bang on here. The whole thing is bonkers. What are they thinking!? Timing is absolutely shocking along with the decision. How the world is now ruled by the distant keyboard warriors and clueless media who just love to chat worthless, clueless rubbish. What a shame.

I did enjoy Eddie Jones but as far as I’m aware, even though he is still the best winning coach in history, I believe the stats were 89% before the World Cup and then 60% since the WC. I do think there was an intangible spark that wasn’t there since the WC. Coaches have an era and then systems get found out! Happened to Ireland in 2018/19, happens to NZ in the 2019 and it happens to England.

Totally agree, utterly bonkers. Fair play that SA Rugby has kept Rassie even with all the negative media.

That‘s a completely different scenario. Erasmus was never under that kind of pressure at home. But don‘t worry, he will be if SA can‘t make the last 4 at the WC

England have underperformed in World Cups for donkeys years but with Eddie there was always a chance. I did feel like he was struggling to get the best out of these players but don’t sack him 9 months before the WC 😅 I wish the best of luck to his successor but they are going to need a miracle.

Since England won in 2003, SA and NZ have each won two WC Finals (the second SA Final was against England). So, looking at the actual facts, England have performed pretty well at the WC compared to ALL teams bar NZ and SA. I don’t dispute that EJ had his day as an England coach, but the trajectory was definitely headed downwards.

This interview is full of energy; and hot air. Looked at from a different perspective, and much of it is clear nonsense. Why should we believe that JH knows what "most rugby fans" feel about EJ? Why would it be invalid to ignore the continuing lack of success (4 Six Nations wins in 2 years), diminishing penetration (8 tries in 2022), selection of out-of-form old favourites, non-selection of in-form talented players, the employment of coaches whom JH describes as por, etc. If JH were able to detach his personal feelings from an evaluation of the latter part of EJ's England career,it would be more valuable. Incidentally, I think it mad to dsmiss a coach and appoint another this close to the World Cup.

The players so not understand (and neither did Eddie) that being England's manager is more than man management, it's cultural management, something that Clive Woodward understood and was vilified by the players for it...but he took them to a world cup win. Btw, England have been to 3 World cups where they've lost out to South Africa...a team that plays the style England pursue, but that just do it more ruthlessly

I think it's right jones was sacked. England were going backwards but also the style was just awful to watch,and when the crowd turns on you then its very hard. Final straw was the South Africa match.england were not even in the game ,Twickenham is the home of England it's just humiliating.worst thing is that it wasn't even south Africa strongest team.

Haskell couldn't be more wrong here. He's an Eddie fan boy. Eddie has done a great job you could argue up to the end of 2019. However, after this point, it started slowly going downhill. There has been no development of the squad since 2019. The style of rugby hasn't evolved. Game plans have become too rigid, and on the pitch, players are clearly scared of making a decision. A perfect example was Marcus Smith kicking the ball out at the end of the NZ game. He's refused to pick in form players regularly. Not to mention, playing players are out of position. England has been lucky in the past few years with results. Covid probably helped with that luck also. Sacking Eddie Jones is the best thing for England and the RFU. It just should have happened earlier, or Eddie's contract should never have been renewed.

Being booed off is because the fans paid a lot of money to watch their team win (or at least try) not to see them practice for a game they won't watch in 12 months time. Hands off Borthwick and Sinfield.

Twickenham fans were ridiculous for the England against Argentina match, most were enjoying the corporate hospitality as they assumed England would walk it. Pompous or what. Audacity to boo their side as they went off against an amazingly powerful Boks side a few weeks later. They paid highly for the seat (we can’t afford the seats when we visit) but haven’t earned the right to criticise as they have given their full support.

Haskell is talking pish ! the Buck stops with the Head Coach ! he failed miserably ! only thing wrong with EJ's sacking is the timing of it. should have been replaced after the RWC ! and saying that he was the most successful(English) Coach is deceptive and deflective. he was nowhere near the Top in the last two 6 Nations ! 5th and a very lucky 3rd just isn't good enough ! and ending 2nd best in the RWC is also simply not good enough !
@Solicitor19572 жыл бұрын
Why is it a bad move? Let’s get this straight: England couldn’t be playing worse! The idea that there is a master plan that will come good is ludicrous. Jones is appalling as an individual and I don’t just mean his excuses when England play badly (‘they will be better next week ‘). His treatment of fringe England players has been dreadful and his sledging over the years has been shameful. Good riddance….🤓
