Anatolia is the land of so many Holy Fathers of the Church. Saint Nicholas , Saint Basil the Great , Saint John the Chrysostom , Saint George , Saint Gregory of Nyssa , Santa Barbara , Saint Gregory of Nazianzus , Saint Irenaeus of Lyon , and so many more ! One of the most recently canonised saints of the Orthodox Church , Saint Paisios of Mount Athos , was also of Cappadocian descent and born there , being baptised by Saint Arsenios the Cappadocian . Cappadocia was really a land of Saints , the same for whole Anatolia !

When Greeks forced to leave Kappadokia because of population exchange Turks they was saying... 'We trade gold for silver' Now classic Greek lords houses are converted as hotels and history museums. Those caves was selters and churches for christians during of muslims invasions and looting. You can still find people speaking Greek there either because visited their ancestors land as tourists or because they're living there. If you find anyone speaks Greek you can ask him about the history of this city. This is the land that the Greek 'santa claus' borned. (Saint Basil, protector of the children) Latins Santa Claus (Saint Nicholas) was also Greek Bishop who borned at Byzantine era, today Turkey but for Greeks was and still is protector of the sailors.

Hi Gabriel, the natural rock formation in the original setting must have been just breathtaking where a group of humans converted into living caves is amazing. Petra is the only location that to me is even more amazing, a carved city out of stone that without modern construction equipment must have taken thousands of years to fully archive. It's a testament to mankind's ingenuity to survive even in a harsh environment. We take for granted what man does today because buildings are built in a couple of years but this kind of construction without modern tools took an incredible amount of very painstaking time.

Gabriel, there were iconoclastic periods in the histories of Egyptians, Jews, Christians and Arabs. Iconoclasm did not allow the depiction of the human form on religious monuments. So, those scrapings you see there probably took place at a time after the 6th century during the Byzantine iconoclasm.
