"People of the Salish Sea" is an excerpt from the feature non-fiction film and media project called Clearwater. Supported by the Suquamish, Snoqualmie, Lummi, Muckleshoot and Squaxin Island tribes, this story explores the inherent relationship between the Coast Salish people and the waters of the Pacific Northwest. Join us as we move from the "place of clear salt water" to the shores of Bella Bella, British Columbia, during the 2014 Canoe Journey. It is in these waters and the adjacent shores-past, present and future-that the Coast Salish people live on the lands of their ancestors and great-great grandchildren.
Produced by Tracy Rector
Cinematography by Daniel Mimura, Laura James, and Lou Karsen
Field Support by Lydia Sigo, Joe Seymour, Melissa Woodrow and Rose Stiffarm
Original songs by the Suquamish Canoe Family and Kate Ahvakana
Composition by BC Campbell
Edited by Jacob Bearchum
Run time: 10:00 min.

I grew up in Poulsbo most my life. Moved as an adult to GA. Currently doing a homeschool unit about Native people of America. Teaching my son about the Northwest Coastal Native tribes. This video makes me miss home and the beauty of the PNW. Thank you for tracking this journey and making it available online.

Absolutely stunning video with effective story telling without the use of any verbal dialogue. Very well done and a cool demonstration of the ceremonial culture of the North West peoples.

My People, my mother, grandma, great-grandmother and many other of my ancestor's were born there. My uncle Vern is in echoing of the Elder's and cousin's and many other relatives that I have met but don't remember. I guess I would be considered an elder now.

Yeah this is the Seattle Area but you can pretty much say the coastline of the Salish Sea and that would intertwine both, the Salish people don't see Countries borders. With all these new changes coming back to the previous culture terms, I really hope Mt. Rainier goes back to Tahoma.

Been there on the Salish Sea. At the shell mounds looking at Salish Coast relics. To admire without touching. I sketch what I've seen. Enjoy finding their etched stones. Those I admire the most are hammered by my steel into coast rip-rap. I prefer hard stones dumped by railroads to protect their industry. Laboring on hillsides between the sea and passing trains is my pleasure. My boat is being readied for another coast search for sketching. I'm living the American Dream. To go there I'm a registered Democrat voter.

Your comment is a year old; but let me help you anyway my dude 😊. So our people were on a Canoe Journey with many many other tribes. We go from one destination to the next on Canoe that last from early morning till evening basically. One group canoes, one uses a sail boat/or a motor boat for just in case emergency support, and the rest travel on land , all going to from one place to the next to get to the final destination. A tribe hold one at their tribal land area as the final destination. You start at another's from miles away. It takes several weeks to complete the distance. Ceremonies are held and big feasts. So many things are held during this event. That's the basic rundown of what you watched. If you want to know more you can look up North Western Native American Canoe Journeys. There are others as well.
