Another great video. Pep finding out how to use Halland is a turning point in their season. And as you said. It is not just his target man abilities but also his ability to lay it if bringing the midfield in play. But also t he pace to then run in behind. Scarey.

Pep learning how to make Haaland take part in build up plays is what will make them deadlier for seasons to come. There are games where he just sits up there with little or no touch but in recent games hes bring more versatility to his playing style. and this has been going on without Mahrez/Foden playing bulk of the games , Alvarez has more room to grow . If they're fit especially in the UCL it will be city vs Madrid in the coming years.. 4:51

IMO there was also another reason of city to not pin arsenal in their half because remember in last couple of clashes arsenal were creating more chances through counter attack because when you play more in opposite half there are more chances of losing ball (due to less passing space),but in this game city not only controled the ball more but also minimizes the counter attack from arsenal.

This is just interesting how De Zerbi’s tactics has become mainstream. Why pep is so good is he isn’t too prideful to learn from others, he learns and then makes his own spin that why he been at the top for 12plus years now

@@cosmosokpighe4962 the squad depth of 9/10 barca and man City was absurd. Pep's barca had the best players at each position. Flick took control of an aging bayern and turned them around in a single season. They didn't have a proper winger when he took control and the defense sector was falling apart. Name any other manager who can turn a struggling team into an unbeatable attacking force within 2 years.

What you said about Arsenal not taking those transition is completely true. I lost my mind screaming everytime I saw it. It's one reason I think Man Utd can do something against Man City in the FA Cup finals. Personally, I don't think Pep has been planning this. Because it took him so long to implement. More accurately, I think De Zerbi's ball was key to his change. Pep sorta admit it when he said Brighton are the best in the league when it comes to the first phase of play. I think he admitted the tactics and thought "wait, I've got a big man up front". I say this because he's doing similar if not exactly as Brighton do. But what do I know

Do not forget what Pep said about Napoli as well in that same interview, Spalletti's Napoli is the best example of the hybrid, posession/gegenpressing and when being pressed by the opposing team, long direct ball to Osihmen or Kvarashkelia...which is something that italian coaches/managers are master at doing since the 60s (only the last part of the long ball to the striker of course, not the posession football or the gegenpressing)....Pep really likes Spalletti it seems.....since, i know that Cruyff teached the false 9 at Barca...but it is just a fact that Spalletti was the first modern coach to succesfuly implement the false 9 in a top team (at Roma with Totti), and then not so long after that, Pep had the brilliant idea of making Messi a false 9, and repopularize the false 9 tactic to the world.

Barca had the best player of all time that covered up the tactical limits of Guardiola's Barca back then, which was a lack of product in certain cases. They just couldn't score goals when the opponent let them make the play. But Messi could dribble 3 guys and score. This City team is a well-oiled machine. You can take out Haaland, you can take out KDB, you can take out any player and the system is still running. Maybe not at 100% but 95%. This year is his best chance to win the CL again. I've never seen such a dominant team. Barca had problems with 10 man defending back then. That's how Mourinho beat them with Inter. I don't know if this City would have those problems. They just rolled over Arsenal like it was some low tier La Liga team. Arsenal could do nothing all game and City could have scored 3 more (if Haaland made his chances). It's just crazy how good they are. Obviously, if they played directly against Barca, Barca would smash them back then. But in general, City might be more successful against multiple teams.

I've arguing that Pep is footballing genius since 2010. What is more impressive is the man himself. Pep is a very sofisticated person intelligent, cultured & well groomed. This is shown in his football for a man born born from humble roots he behaves like an aristocrat & as far as fooball philosophy & tactics he is undoubtedly the king. What people don't miss about Pep is that he understands football as a system built on sound processes which is the same as an industrial engineer understands his manufacturing process, like an accountant knows his audit process its all the same & that's why he can see the future.

No one intelligent said that it wouldn't work. The guy is not only an offensive powerhouse but is physically fit enough and intelligent enough to lead the line defensively. On offense, City only "sacrificed" a technical player in the 11 to make way for a speedy outlet, monster in the air, and clinical finisher all rolled into one. It's basic economics. You would have to be braindead to not get an intelligent, prolifically clinical Herculean athlete to not work in ANY TEAM. Great lil dip into an emerging trend for Pep. Sounds like there are elements of tactics that Lucho Enrique employed when he coached Barca to their UCL victory in 2015. Back then he'd have his CBs recycle possession to bait opponents forward, then once the did and space opened up behind that defense, Barca would be very direct, vertical even bypassing the MF at times to get the ball to MSN as quickly as possible. Coaxing the opponent out of their defensive shape is a good idea. Thr various ways how City does it is very informative to observe. Let's see how long and against whom this tactic is effective.

Basically, over the last 2 months, Pep has been using 4 CBs as his backline instead of the standard 2 CBs and 2 FBs. The 4 CBs strategy that Pep has been using is to provide more defensive solidity and compactness. So, when City have possession, John Stones inverts and becomes an extra CDM alongside Rodri. Then, when City lose possession, Stones slots back into his CB position and now you have a back 4 and City defending in their usual 4-4-2 shape. In a nutshell, Pep has gone from using his fullback (Walker) invert and become the extra CDM to using one of his CBs (John Stones) to be the one that inverts and become the extra CDM. This is the reason for City's defensive solidity over the last few months. Pep is truly the GOAT of managers imo.

People say Pep plays fancy, glamourous football and that he's not a 'pragmatist'. They STILL don't understand his philosophy - he is a pragmatist of the highest order. It's even self-proclaimed. Possession, progression, finishing - it's all with the sole practical purpose of winning games.

Arsenal should have seen how city played away to bayern. City no longer go full force in every game. They're managing games better and against some oppositions they'll seem reserved at times

Pep is the GOAT. Ironically he began this tactic at Arsenal away and it has helped turn city ibto thr monster they've been since February. Arteta helping Pep out even when he's no longer part of his coaching staff

Being adaptive makes you an absolute great. Wenger, for example, always felt like a ‘one plan’ manager, who only wanted to play ‘his’ style ALL the time. No compromise. Very stubborn. His stubbornness got him to three league titles, yes, but he never changed when Arsenal were eventually ‘found out’. I hope Arteta can continue to be ‘Pep’s Apprentice’ and learn from the great man, in terms of doing what it takes to win

I wish you could talk to my coaches man. Our team is so disorganized with everything and don't even know what our style of play is. Everyone just thinks that they need to hit a long ball because De Bruyne does but they don't see the possession and baiting beforehand. Or half the team wants to play like Barcelona and the other half wants to play like Man city. Just goes to show how valuable having a good coach is at the higher levels.

This method was first used by De Zerbi. But hey, he's no Pep.

OMG it had/has not much if anything to do with tactics. ManCity has players with pace and power in theire offense. Arsenal don't have it in theire defense. ManCity players don't make unnecessary misstakes. Arsenal players do make too much. ManCity players have more quality. Especially confidence in 1on1 situations wich is the most important skill for every player (except the goalkeeper). Forget those tactics shit!

Pretty much how Spurs beat City repeatedly. You need a top level goalscorer (Haaland v Son/Kane), a creative player between midfield and CBs (de Bruyne V Kane).

It's important to notice this is not really a Guardiola idea. I think the team that best exemplifies this kind of game is De Zerbi's Brighton. Pep has started using this a lot lately but De Zerbi has been doing this for years in multiple teams. I don't know if De Zerbi got it from someone else but the team that exemplifies the concepts you've talked about in this video is Brighton. Of course Brighton don't have KDB and Halaand. I'm glad you mentioned it in the video but still it has to be stated.

As much as it pains me as a United fan, Pep Guardiola is the greatest manager of all time. Imagine if Pep wasnt in EPL, the other manager would have dominated would have been Klopp

pep is now doing what brighton are doing, that artificial counter attack. inviting opp to press them in city's half and after that vertical passes find the man in the left behind space.

This is why Pep is a master manager. Why he is prob the best Manager in the last 10 years. He is always looking to change a system based from a 442. Conte kept the same system even though he didn't have the players and it being exposed. Conte then blamed the players. Pep adapts. He doesn't ask the players do things they cant. Pep adapts to the players he has and works with them he is a man manager as well as a team manager.

This is no contradiction, city don't play vertical as in fast long balls , completely the opposite. Like they played against arsenal only works if a team pressed like arsenal which many teams won't do precisely because what happened to arsenal. The key is not possession or vertically but the organisation of the players positionally relative to the ball which makes all these passes possible without losing the ball
