Nakakalungkot yung nangyari kay Vincent. Kung tutuusin napakarami na din kasi talagang nangloko sa kanya saka nagpaasa kaya hindi mo siya masisisi kung naging maingat na siya saka prangka doon sa lalaki. Lesson na din yun sa atin. Yung seryosong dumadating na tao satin yun pa pala yung talagang nilalayo natin dahil sa mga hindi magandang naranasan natin.

I’m a year late, but respectfully disagree. No second chance. What Ricky demonstrated was self-love. I empathise with Vincent. It’s difficult to trust people after you’ve been mucked about. But Vincent was dismissive, judgemental and disrespectful towards Ricky. Vincent didn’t even let him explain. Vincent’s past wounds didn’t make him more careful about who to trust; they made him toxic towards genuinely good people, and made him trust nobody. Which works out for now, but impossible and self-destructive in the long run. Once, there was a boy who did that to a woman who truly loved him. He was hurting. And hurting people hurt others. Because others found this woman attractive and she was sort of reserved, the shy type, and hails from a “rich” family, he readily assumed she was “snobbish”. Although deep inside, he wanted her, and was secretly jealous when guys hit on her, he pretended he couldn’t care less about her and her wellbeing. Instead, he decided to play it cool. Way too cool. He’d neg her, compare her negatively to other girls. He’d mock her body, decisions, quirks and speech because when she’d attempt to change herself just so she’d get his approval, it boosted his ego. However she dressed and fixed her hair, whatever makeup she had, she was “never pretty enough” for him. He always had something negative to say about her. Time and time again, he’d make her go through hoops and loops, testing her to see how far she’d go for even just a crumb of “love” from him. He made her feel he wasn’t proud of her; he kept her secret from his folks and peers. He’d rub it in her face that he’s “not even trying to impress” her. He wanted to project himself as “not like other guys”. Thus, he didn’t better himself, even when he lost his job. She stood by him. Still, he strung her along. He convinced himself that what he was doing was fine, because he’d lose her one day anyway. Her life appeared much more interesting than his. She had work she enjoyed; she seemed to have lots of friends and she always travelled. She always gave him gifts during holidays and souvenirs each time she travelled, even if he never gave her anything. One day, she said she no longer wanted to continue whatever it was they had. She wrote him one final message, to tell him his behaviour during their “relationship” was hurtful, that he’ll probably be happier with someone who fit his “standards”. Once more, he pretended not to care. He thought she was provoking him to chase her. After virtually nothing, he began to miss her. He missed the woman who never asked for anything in return, never judged him, who made him feel special. He never found her contact details, though. He had no means to see her and he never heard from her, like ever. Turns out she changed them after she left him. She seemed to avoid all areas where they used to date and hang out, as he never saw her at any of them again. Since he kept her and their “relationship” secret, it was that easy for her to disappear without a trace. Like Vincent, he was expecting unpleasant stuff from her to “prepare” himself, to protect himself from future pain. So it was ironic that after everything he did against her (despite her love for and loyalty to him), when she dropped him abruptly, it still bruised him. It was tragic that in spite of his “self-protective” measures, he still ended up getting hurt. He was such a prideful boy so he never admitted he lost something good and real the day she went away. Do excuse this “novella”. But let this be both a reminder and warning to those who were hurt. Carefulness about who to allow in your life is *NOT* the same as being toxic, hurting decent people JUST BECAUSE you can. Don’t be like Vincent, and like the boy in the above scenario.
