With little ones in small pots, I've found to water mainly around the perimeter. Making just moisten the top layer, but heavier around the edges. It will encourage the roots to travel towards the sides.

Pepper geek the best channel out. He’s a great guy to! I am growing some peppers on my apartment balcony and had them get a cold injury one night. I messaged him and asked if I could send him a picture and get his opinion. Took a couple days for him to see it but he walked me through all of it. My peppers are looking amazing. It’s very rare ypu see someone with 200k plus followers and they still respond to your DMs. I would have completely ruined my plants if I didn’t get his advice because I thought it was something completely different then what it was

something I am testing to avoid overwatering. I use small solo cups (about 10 ounce cups). I am poking a finger size hole at the perimeter of each cup, which allows air to get all the way down to the bottom of the soil. Often times I DO have standing water in my trays & so far this method is working well. In a way where the hole is sorta acts as an air pruner similar to a grow bag.

Living in Florida, it’s difficult to keep up with the watering. I have to pot my plants because of nematodes that n the ground. I started using ollas and olla spikes have excellent results. For those unfamiliar with this method, it’s a technology that has been used for thousands of years. I recommend researching it. We’re in a very dry period and I have no worries about too little or too much watering. No top watering reqired which helps to avoid disease and prevent weeds. All you have to do is make sure there’s water in the vessels. I supplement my spikes with whine bottles.

@Ira88881

@@beccaentenberg What choice do I have? The shade cloth helps, and I can’t control the rain. All of my stuff is in containers outside, dozens, and they’re growing and producing. Remarkably growing and producing? No, but enough for me as a hobby. Insects can be a problem on one plant but not others. There’s no logic to it. But I don’t care. I don’t grow emotional attachments to most of my plants. I’m always germinating dozens of others, inside and outside, to replace them. I have a suspicion that my plants would do better IN GROUND, because even with our lousy sandy soil, I think the drainage would be better. The layout of my backyard, how I use it, and the methodology of growing in-ground just doesn’t do it for me. But heck, if we can’t grow outdoors with our great sun and warm temps, it’s time to pack it in.

@@Ira88881 its still better than them being in the ground though. The potted plants should usually dry out sooner than ground level plants as long as they are in well draining soil. If you want them to dry out faster you can use fabric planters. Though maybe it seems counterintuitive, as they will get wet, when it's not raining they will wick away moisture in the wind.

You had a web article talking about making your own potting soil with equal parts peat moss, perlite, topsoil, and compost. The pH of that mix was 7.9. I ended up adding more peat moss and perlite to get the pH down to 6.6.

@georgehanna6900
@georgehanna6900 Жыл бұрын
@@dana102083 It's actually the opposite. Peat loses acidity over time, that's what the research shows.
@dana102083
@dana102083 Жыл бұрын
@@georgehanna6900 well-- let me put it this way. You have a bucket of peat based soil and the company put lime in to make more neutral pH. The plant you put in the pot uses a lot of calcium up which was buffering the low pH of peat. So whether the acidity comes from using the lime up or the peat breaking down is moot as its the outcome. This is different in soil as soil is usually often alkaline due to limestone and neutralization with a acidic rain water. Based on my experiences with calcium hungry plants and reusing peat based promixHP for 3 years, I have to aggressively apply disolvable calciumto ensure my soil is not a acidic. Its why they dont recommend reusing soil as boundary may be affected by poor pH leading to lockout. Ive only corrected my pH issues with adding alkaline material and this issue was not present my first 3 grow periods. It took a lot of reading to figure out this issue in how much lime is needed to offset in an artificial environment in a sea of bro science. Please lets discuss..and if you have something reputable to read in terms of that reasearch please pass it along. 🙏

I have no idea whether I'm coming or going with my bell peppers. The flowers are dropping. I thought I was wanting too much so I backed off, so you still drop it. When I touch the surface of the soil it feels damp but if I dig my finger way down it is 100% dry. At first I thought I had a calcium deficiency. The reason is because the one bell peppers that I did have had brown spots on them. The bell pepper wasn't eatable

One of mine has since someone else watered it...not bounced back. Any ideas why? I've tried watering it how I had been prior...using enough that it drains and doesn't fully become dry. It's kept in a ceramic pot and when someone else decided to water it I noticed when they were doing it they basically filled almost the entire pot...only has one hole at the bottom least that I'm aware of. Other pepper plants are not in a pot but a slightly raised bed and I haven't had the same happen.

I have all my peppers in a hydroponic system, and one of them now has yellow leaves (older ones, only the inner "fields"). My first try will be to let them dry up a bit to see if it's overwatering (at least they actually stand in water a bit ;)). My main question however is, when I have found the problem and fixed it, will those leaves get green again (indicating to me that I was successful), or just stay yellow?
@PepperGeek

Hi there! My pepper seedlings have 2 pairs of true leaves. The cotyledones wrinkled up, yellowed and fell right off. In addition, the leaves started to curl. My light is 17inches away and at 50% I don't think the light is the problem, is it due to being overwatered? Is it ok if the cotyledones fell off at this stage and will the curled pepper leaves flatten out to normal (it has been a week and they are still curled)?

As a GENERAL rule, if tips curl down its overwatering..if the whole leaves hang low it needs watering.. Its hard to know about seedlings as theyre easy to dry out and easy to overwater.
