I like with drummers like Matt Halpern that the things they play aren't so impossible as a lot of my other favorite drummers, so instead of being like "oh, I can't play that" it's "I should try and play that." It's still creative and inspiring enough that I wanna try and play his stuff, and it's not so beyond my level of playing that it discourages me.

Exactly. But the thing I appreciate about Matt is the disconnect between what he records and what he performs. The stuff he records is very approachable for the most part. Yet when you hear him perform them live he sometimes doesn’t even play the same parts. His performed parts are so much more technical it’s hilarious.

troutt222 at least for me his parts are technical, difficult, creative, but still possible. That is, I made this comment before Hail Stan came out. I can’t touch 99% of the grooves on that beast, but a lot of stuff on Juggernaut and P3 are right up my alley in that the parts are tough but with some work I can get there.

Tbh, I wonder if that's just what you believe because some of it seems doable until you try it. Or at least for me, some stuff ends up being so much harder than I expected. Like stuff that sounds easy can end up being absolutely brutal to get down. Then once you got it, super easy to execute but to learn it's so tough

I just got the book for the drum parts for Periphery 3. I’ve spent the last few years studying Gavin Harrison and have ingested that style and can synthesize it into my playing. I hope to do the same with this guy.
