As this would normally be the week of activities that culminates with the National Puerto Rican Day Parade march up 5th Avenue, this weeks #BMHC's online programs will feature Puerto Rican cultural themes. Tonight's #PercussionDiscussion is about the musical form of bomba.
La Maraca is a rattle like instrument made out of the fruit of the Higuera Tree; a common tree in the island of Puerto Rico. In Bomba music, the Maraca serves as an important role, traditionally, it is the instrument the lead singer plays. Activist, poet, percussionist, singer, dancer and specialist in the instruction of traditional Mayaguez style bomba and plena NORKA HERNANDEZ NADAL will demonstrate and discuss the Maraca in a few different patterns in Bomba rhythms as well as playing technicques to help build stamina and an even sound.
