Medusa's only appearance in the series is in the chapter that this episode was adapted from. Monsters eventually regenerate in Tartarus and come back, but it can take a very long time for some while others, like Alecto, can come back very fast. Medusa has still yet to regenerate as far as I can tell by RR's most recent books. The Minotaur regenerates in time for book 5 though, but Percy just kills him again.

PS: although she does return in a sense in the end. Poseidon ships Medusa's Head back to Percy and he gives it to Sally who uses it to... dispose of Gabe. Without a divorce. She then sells her first and only statue called The Poker Player which looks remarkably like a certain ex-husband of hers who vanished without a trace.

I found weird that Medusa was "easy" to kill, but it kinda makes sense, she wouldn't know that she was invisible because of the hat and would be probably confused that Percy could look right into her, but it is also really smart in multiple ways, it works in the story bc it shows Annabeth's intelligence (in this sense the show is more consistent that the books bc Annabeth immediately identifies Medusa) and the group resourcefulness overall and, for the producers standpoint, it is perfect, no blood, no clear image of the head, no body.

Grover fled off before he could finish saying what was his plan and Annabeth says something along the lines of "well, we are going to need another one", so it is not 100% clear if he crashing was intentional of accidental and who gave the hat idea, but I think it is implied Annabeth did as who was originally distracting Medusa was Percy w/ Riptide so Grover wasn't actually needed for the final plan

I think the whole point of this episode was for the 3 of them to be able to trust each other with their life. Medusa was used to test their allegiance to each other. She did get beheaded pretty easily but I’m ok with that. Her purpose was used greatly for the episode. GOOD JOB RICK!!

Forgetting that Annabeth was in the movies is excusable. Considering it wasn't really Annabeth. The first movie tried fusing Annabeth and Clarisse into one character and then the sequel tried to damage control that but not well. I think It'd be good to remember that episode count and time limit. 8 episodes at 30-40 minutes is most likely a Disney decision not a Rick Riordan decision.

I think Annabeth in the show might actually be smarter… and I’m all here for it. Guessing Percy is a son of Poseidon, figuring out Medusa instead of falling for her trap, she actually seems like a smart teammate whereas in the book she sees Percy manipulate water (multiple times) and hopes he’s a son of Zeus… I know she gets smarter later in the book but that start was rough, especially with her ignoring Grover (who can smell monsters) and going into Aunty Em. Like Percy is new to this so I get it, but someone who’s been on the run for years, ever since she was 7 isn’t a little bit suspicious of Aunty Em?

I guess they just skipped over Percy giving Grover the shoes but the reason why is the same reason Percy can't take an airplane: because he's more vulnerable to Zeus if he's in the air. And the consensus song was created for the show-in the books, instead of singing, Grover has a set of pan pipes that he can play to do nature magic. A running joke was that the only thing he could play was a Hilary Duff song, which was funny when it came out in 2005 but would probably go over audience's heads now lol

i think faithful adaptations tend to feel rushed because books usually make short scenes seem long by letting us know how the characters are feeling at every moment and having vivid descriptions of the environment which takes up a lot of pages. with shows, everything is visual so its gonna pass by a lot quicker even if they include every event, although they did leave out some small events from the in this instance.

I love the episode. Her getting killed by twelve year olds is fine by me especially since their half bloods with sharp weapons. In real life if a twelve year old had a a knife in their hands, they could still kill and stab an adult with it, ages don't change the fact they have a sharp weapon in their hands. In this tv show these children have actual gods DNA, other combat skills (especially percy and annabeth) and because of that instinctively know how to fight, I definitly don't think its a huge leap of faith for these kids to be able to kill adult monsters. Also medusa IS the first "boss" they face in the books on the quest and in the movies

I didn't like the changes in this episode at first, but they make sense. In the book, Annabeth doesn't suspect anything, which is super out of character, so I like that here she's immediately like "guys, that's obviously Medusa, c'mon". Also, Medusa's motivations in the book are kinda stupid. She's just like "I hate the gods and love statues, so I'll turn demigods into statues". Here's she's way more nuanced!
@Gradestar10
@Gradestar10 9 ай бұрын
Not exactly. In th books it's implied that, after th disappearance of her sisters, medusa suffers frm a serious form of monophobia, which pushes her to create her statues, but it's also a job for her since she sells them to both mortals n th gods, especially to hades to embellish persephone's garden in erebos. Medusa is actually kind to percy in th 1' book in her own strange way. N, btw, it's not like medusa is th only 1 in greco-roman mythology to be connected w/ petrifying things. That could also have been th lair of aix, or even of hermes

Annabeth doesn't suspect anything until Medusa mentions her sisters. To be fair, Grover didn't really suspect anything either, except for having a weird vibe and hearing stuff. I took that as their senses and minds being hijacked by the smell of the food. Or how the books put it, in Percy's words "The aroma (of the burgers) was like laughing gas in the dentist’s chair-it made everything else go away". So, it's not like "Annabeth didn't suspect anything", it's more like she "couldn't". The bus sequence unfolded differently in the show but the result remained the same; they left their backpacks behind. The difference is the demigods couldn't smell the food, only Grover. I think that's why Annabeth was able to deduce it was Medusa.

Now, the movie is a very loose adaptation and doesn't follow the book well so not easy to compare the two, but I think the pace probably only feels fast because of the 35-45 minute episode format. We got, what, 25 mins or so with Medusa here? That's already a 1/4 of a typical movie length.

I don't get how people who read the book feel a rush. In the books, some fights happen withing 3 pages (ergo max. 3 minutes of reading) but expressions, emotions and everthing else is written ornately to convey the feeling of a longer fight. The book has a lot of talking between characters who just explain stuff. Emotions, atmosphere, looks of places and the feelings of the heroes are discribed very deeply. But you can't really do that in a series. The heroes move fast, because the have no time. They meet different monsters on their way and have to master challanges aswell. In fact the books are fast paced. The series just tries to not miss out anything to important.

The ways that they use and manipulate people, mortal or otherwise, for their own personal gain only to turn around and ruin lives simply for existing or for having a differing opinion makes them hardly better than Kronos. We don't spend that much time Camp Half-Blood. Not just in the first book. I have a digital copy of all books. Percy spends chapters 5-9 at the camp before he leaves for the quest, which equals to around 94 pages, plus 8 pages from chapter 10, for a grand total of 102. In the TV show, they took out Percy training with Luke before and after Capture The Flag and also a few conversations with Grover and Chiron. So yeah, it does feel a little bit fast. There also is the chapter when they return to the camp after the quest, which is an additional 23 or so pages.

I once heard in a video game "Children are box office poison.". As someone whose heart has been hardened, I think that's what I get from this show so far. I know Riordan made this with his children at heart. But as someone who isn't a dad, but an older brother, the air of familiarity given to deities doesn't work on me. Because if a father's job is to protect and care for, it's a brother's to toughen up their siblings (also known as tormenting them). This is the long version of saying I like it tough (not emo, just tough, like "Madoka Magica", "Drakengard"/"Nier", or "Hunger Games"). I mean, "Harry Potter" and "Hunger Games" were aimed at a young demographic, and I'm still a fan of them to this day. "Percy Jackson" feels too fanfic like. And not the good kind of fanfic.

Why is the Oracle showing Gabe? The book did the same thing, but it showed Gabe and his 2 buddies playing poker. In the show, Gabe plays online poker, so it's only him giving Percy the quest. Don't actually know why the Oracle chose Gabe. I don't remember if there even is a reason. To annoy him? I do remember the Oracle having a strange sense of humor. Maybe they'll mention something later on? In episode 1, we see the black Pegasus. I couldn't remember the name until another reactor mentioned it: Blackjack. I'm so glad we get to see him earlier than we normally would. That's some nice foreshadowing. Starting from the bus sequence, it's different from the books (not too different, the end result is the same, but different enough). I actually love the changes that they made! And Jessica Parker Kennedy was awesome as Medusa, I didn't even recognize her, I've only seen her in The Flash. Speaking of changes, I wonder why they made Annabeth not know the true story of Medusa? The statuary being in the basement made for an interesting set for the fight. Speaking of the fight, it isn't actually shorter, it's basically the same length as the book. The one in the movie was longer I think. I love that they stuck with the book version and shipped the head to Olympus. It's very Percy. "Hermes express" yes, that is Hermes, Luke's father, God of traveler's, thieves, merchants, Messenger of the Gods. Great reaction! Amazing episode, loved it! PS: Don't worry, we will have longer more epic battles in the future! "return to sender" haha nice

That was just how RR wrote it in the first book. He ditched that for the rest of the series.
