In 1969 and 1970 I surveyed most of the historic peregrine eyries in San Diego county. All but the Torrey pines slough eyries were unoccupied though we did see some recently fledged birds near the El Capitan reservoir. In the 1970 survey no eyries that we visited were occupied. Blacks beach historical site was not occupied though it was difficult to determine exactly where it had been due to significant cliff erosion. I checked Torrey pines for several years on and off but observed no occurrence. In the early 1980s we put up a hack box on cliffs overlooking El Capitan reservoir were we successfully released 3 young Peregrines.

Very few people know that the Peregrine falcon is only the fastest in a stoop flight, using gravity to accelerate downwards. In a horizontal flight, or what is called a true- flight, the honors belong to the White-throated Needle-tailed swift.

Fastest bird? Heck, fastest animal on Earth! Love them, but never had the thrill of seeing one...😢 I worked at a wildlife sanctuary north of Chicago. No Peregrine there. I learned a lot of all the native species in my area. Nugget of Knowledge: Crows have extremely high intelligence. We saved the animals we could to release them, but kept those that had medical issues. So many stories I could tell!
