Checo is Max's Bottas , but here's my therory. 1. Checo's merch sales are huge and 2. I feel this is a Horner vs. Helmut powerplay. Remember Helmut's comments of dangling a one year contract over Checo to get the best out of him. He would't have agreed on a two year contract. Worried about Carlos althogh I think Williams is a good long term prospect if the Merc engine is rumoured to be great.

I have a #2 driver that sells a load (60%) of my merch and a huge market share of my energy drink. I was honestly so shocked to see the news drop at this point in the season. Red Bull can afford to wait because they have the best car and so many drivers would be desperate for a seat in that car. I feel the contract extension is the result of current drivers' market. With so many unknowns there's a chance Red Bull was afraid someone might swipe Perez while they don't have a driver. Sainz might already have a contract/might be far into negotiations, just waiting to announce it and no other available driver has what it takes to drive along Max, as you have to be both quick and a team player.

@@NotApplicableJB Carlos being in negotiations with Red Bull for Sergio Perez's seat doesn't make sense. Carlos has no ambitions to shine Max's shoes for the next few seasons. Surely, neither party would publicly admit that this is all about the possibility of Max taking a hike (he IS in negotiations with Mercedes after all), but THAT is the drive Carlos Sainz is really after. And likewise, Red Bull not exploring their options in a worst case scenario would be negligent in the extreme... so, whatever they were talking about, Perez's seat was not it.

Wonder if RedBull would be fully fine with tossing the 2024 WCC. After all, keeping Checo probably gives them enought money to compensate for a loss in WCC position. Maybe the CFD/ATR penalty is starting to snowball, while Ferrari and McLaren have a slight edge considering Mercedes piped them to 2nd. Perhaps they are ok with getting more time to get better CFD correlation and modeling, specially as they approach the new regulation cycle.

I agree with what you’ve said about Perez and I don’t understand why Red Bull would want to keep a driver that has a completely different car preference?? that was one of the things that stood out to me. I think they’ve made a huge mistake and I wouldn’t be surprised if his contract ends up getting terminated early (pay out like DR had with McLaren) or if he gets switched with an RB driver - I’m hoping Yuki will go to Alpine and Lawson will finally get his RB seat. I was also hoping Sainz would get the second Red Bull seat and don’t understand why they wouldn’t choose him over Perez. I heard a lot about Max’s dad and Carlos’s dad not getting along but to me that shouldn’t be why you don’t sign a driver, they could just keep the dad’s separate or say they can’t attend the same race weekends if it’s that big of a deal. it just makes zero sense to me when Carlos is clearly the better driver right now. I feel really bad for Carlos cause he does not deserve to have to go to a team that’s so much further back on the grid. again, I also agree that Audi won’t be ready for minimum 4 years once they take over and Carlos has previously said he wants to go to an established team where he doesn’t have to deal with any growing pains since he is getting older and doesn’t want to wait for them to get good - I don’t think he wants to have a super long career like Alonso so that’s why he doesn’t want to have to build a team up but seems like that’s his only option now. of his available options I am hoping for Williams cause I think he would get along great with Alex as a teammate and James Vowels is so smart and well spoken that I think that will appeal to Carlos.

I think they’re keeping Checo purely because it’s the safest move. He does bring quite a bit of money to the team and looks like one of the drivers okay to have the 2nd driver spot. Sure his performance isn’t that great but with all the stuff going on both on and off track this move is probably what Red Bull thinks is safe. My guess is they give him 1 year, if all goes well they keep him until summer break where they switch someone else in. So a 1.5 year window essentially. I think they’ll be back to very strict and cutthroat decisions once 2026 and its affected years roll by but for now they’re just playing it safe to make sure this cycle ends the way they want it to

As a Checo fan, I also don’t really get it…. I feel like Redbull knows exactly why his form goes downhill at some point in the seasons but they are not willing to do anything about it, they are happy with just having Max dominating the sport and perhaps Checo is the only driver who’s comfortable being the second driver, because he has proved multiple times to be a great driver, so it’s a win win for RB

Red Bull doesn't want anybody challenging Max. That's one of main reasons he's being kept. Checo's good but not good enough to fight Max or beat him. I like Sainz. He's very good. Too good that if he goes to Red Bull he'll definitely challenge Max for wins. They don't want that. You talked about Gasly and Albon not being given the same kind of treatment Checo got. Red Bull didn't have a contingency plan when Daniel left. They thought he'd stick around for a few more years. They had to get someone quick and Gasly was the one chosen. Unfortunately, his promotion was too soon. They wanted him scoring podiums from day one. Since he couldn't deliver, he got demoted. Albon was showing promise at Toro Rosso so they swapped him for Gasly. He was also given the same expectations and although he did score a podium later on, it was too late for him. None of their junior drivers were ready in 2021 so they got an outsider, Checo. Despite his dip in performance, he still delivers the desired results. He also brings in money so that counts a lot. Yuki's an okay driver but will never be good enough for Horner's eyes. He may need to start looking ahead for a new drive in 2026. Daniel's there for marketing purposes. He still brings in the money. Also, I think he'll wait it out another year or two in the hopes of rejoining Red Bull before he reconsider his options.

Given how fickle fans are, its no surprise that after just 2 mid/poor weekends, people are questioning his place in the team, whilst ignoring what he did at the other 70% of races at the start of the year. It's too soon to write Sergio off. Maybe Red Bull wants to give him the contract to boost his morale and he can pick it up again in Canada. They should have learnt a lot last year, about dealing with an off-confidence driver. The 1-2 dynamic that Perez brings is what Red Bull need to bring home titles. Yeah, Ferrari and Mclaren are closer now, but I still think Checo still has it.

Honestly I have a feeling that the biggest driving factor is that they don't want to write off the intended function of the sister team, even though they're currently unwilling to promote any of them, and bringing in somebody from a different team would at the very least heavily undermine it. Ric may well be out at the end of the year, Yuki's on a very specific trajectory that puts him to be far more likely at a team like aston martin come 2026 even in the unlikely chance that he *had* been promoted to full red bull status for next year, and chances are Liam's going into the other rb seat for next year, and it obviously doesn't make sense for him to just go straight to the senior team (and even if horner politics stymie the transition and force them to keep ric he's obviously not getting repromoted now). But even with everyone else largely out of the running internally, it just seems they don't want to make even more of a mess of this pseudo-feeder system any more than they have as of late. And, well, yeah, the pairing they have has obvious drawbacks right now (the ever growing risk it brings to their constructor's championship prospects) but the pros (more than anything just from the strict lack of friction it brings on track, combined with the nice financial backing which other teams could certainly benefit from) are still considerable even factoring them in. Granted, I do still think that they probably would've taken Sainz if they had been remotely serious about looking elsewhere though.

Not sure why anyone thought saniz deserved that seat if ferrari had the best car in 2022 and was 5th in the drivers standings and 7th in 2023 in a decent ferrari. he wins 1 race and all of a sudden he deserves a top seat maybe ask why ferrari didn’t want to renew him in the first place. Yuki scores some points in a copy RB19 but fails to get it near the top 5 and all of a sudden he deserves the top seat. Dont get me started with Albon lol..

People don’t understand that in F1 it’s not about only victories it’s all about money. And checo brings a shit tonneeeeee of money to redbull that’s it. Money. He brings in way more money than Verstappen

All you peeps seem to think that anyone but Max will be able to handle that RB20? History tells us that no, nobody can. So as much as we want Carlos, Yuki or Liam in that car they are going to have trouble handling that RB20. Let's give the chap a chance and hope for performance clauses and hope that the big fat bag of gold Checo brings to the table isn't dragging him down.

they used to give him a contract extension around Monaco weekend last couple of years, that’s why it’s released now maybe? so ig basically it's all determined even before his decline in performance

Carlos sainz isn’t even RB’s next best choice after checo. They don’t want the conflict of having both sainz sr and jos in the paddock

Without Any doubt, Checo Pérez has been the best choice for Red Bull, considering its qualities and talents, even though he is Mexican!!!

Carlos' entourage causes a lot of internal politics and instability in a team and his talent simply isn't worth that trouble. that's why none of the big teams want to give him a big contract
