As a local Taiwanese, I'm impressed that not only you did the homework about how to do the boba itself and the tea, but also you know about how Taiwan is promoting using stainless straws for boba milk tea and banned plastic straws. @KuKu Kuuuma Not sure about Taiwan, or your Taiwanese culture, but Taiwan is not making a great impression for me. My boba went horribly wrong and I realised it was all because of the 'Tapioca Starch' I bought, I searched the Chinese Character on the bag and it says Gorgon Powder instead of the big, bold "TAPIOCA POWDER" printed on the packet. It was, obiviously imported from Taiwan and I'm just wondering, is this Taiwanese Factory is making this printing error on purpose to make customers buy it? Or they are just so bad at english that they couldn't have double checked if the english imprinting on it were wrong or not? And I swear, this is not the first time something like this have happened to me. The Taiwanese factories have a grudge against english or something, cuz they are always deceiving us consumers. And also, through out the whole video he said nothing about Taiwan, his idea of using stainless straws are purely his kind act towards the envirnment. Are all Taiwaness this self-entitled, and so eager to relate every good act with Taiwan? I don't mean to offend anyone, so please no Taiwan nationalist come attack me🤣 Lastly, a genuine question, is Taiwan an independent country? If so, how did they become one?

Thanks for the awesome video! I've made both the Earl Grey and the Matcha now. Some tips for viewers: 1 cup of tapioca starch/flour total. You can find that in the recipe he provides in the description. I just add it all at once slowly after I bring the heat down and it seems to do the same for me. Tapioca starch is the same as tapioca flour. The syrup is great without the molasses if you don't have it. If you get oobleck when you should have dough and it all seems hopeless, put it back in and cook it on low heat for a little while. It'll lose the oobleck quality and become more of a dough after a little while. If it is crazy sticky and you think you've added enough tapioca, add a bunch more tapioca and you will be surprised that it will become better. I mean a bunch. If you have a lumpy mess, you added the starch too fast without mixing well or you had it too hot. Just try again. Take his advice and reheat the dough when it seems to not be rolling well. I dip my hands in a little water too while rolling and that helps also. + His advice on using ice cubes really makes a difference. Definitely give yourself some time to do this. It has taken me consistently over 2 hours each time and it makes a pretty good mess. Also be forgiving if your balls don't look perfect or seem a little cracked. Mine still boiled and became boba just fine. Have a great day👍

Note to anyone here: milk tea is traditionally made with milk added to the tea, which is the temperature you prefer, then shaken/stirred, and this is going to give you a lot more tea flavor as well as flexibility on how much flavor you want. Infusing tea into hot milk may sound like a good idea, but in actuality, heating the milk hot enough to infuse any flavor from the lose leaf tea is going to be too hot and end up scalding your milk, giving it an undesirable cooked flavor rather than a nice and fresh cream flavor. Also, trying to use loose leaf tea in milk is just not going to extract much flavor due to the milk being heavy, and again, you want whatever liquid being used to be hot to extract the most flavor, but you don't want to be keeping your milk at such high temperatures for so long.

@@ayesha9792 watery as in texture wise? Or watery as in flavour wise? For texture, just add more milk, for taste, leave the tea bag in the boiling water a little longer. @@theaitokyo kinda late, but infuse the tea into water first! Has more flexibility as you get to decide how strong you want your tea. Plus, the tea isn’t going to infuse into the milk too much as you need hot liquids for infusion and heating milk to high temps is just 😐. Perhaps a 1:2 ratio of tea to milk would be good ig. Also please try to use loose tea if you can, instead of the tea bags, trust me it has better flavor. (And of course, remember to strain the loose tea) (Please note, I haven’t ever made bubble tea, but I have made milk tea on occasions and it’s turned out pretty good) Let me know if you try making it! Hope you have fun:)

@Ruby Walker You could've saved your too-sweet drinks by simply adding more milk and more boba. Could then share with a couple friends or leave them in the fridge for later/tomorrow. Just a thought! Yeah the amount of water you need will vary depending on what brand of starch you're using ^^ When I make boba I usually start off with a small amount of boiling water, then add splashes of boiling water until the dough becomes workable and a bit like playdoh in texture.

@BORIS Zafirov As with any dough, the amount of water-to-flour ratio will depend on many factors, including the temperature of the room and the humidity of the room. So toss your caution - Joshua did just fine. Perhaps he could've mentioned that you may need to add a little more flour or a little more water, yes, but _for him on that day,_ that was the right recipe.

I've never made these before and thought it would be fun to give it a try. After making endless amounts of sweet oobleck for my kids to play with (twice) I discovered that you need to cook the first half of the tapioca flour over low heat until it starts to gel just a little bit. Worked great after that!!! So yummy!!!! :)

Here’s the thing, today is the first day that I’ve tried boba. I had the original black tea boba drink and a lychee one, both were absolutely amazing. Since I love tartness and floral flavors, the lychee was by far my favorite. And like you mentioned, there are bad and mediocre boba shops out there from what I’ve heard, but thank god that my first experience was awesome. Tender pearls, sweet beverage, etc. Not to mention, but their Takoyaki and yakisoba are to die for.

Also bonus tip you can also soak your bobba after boiling in honey instead of the brown sugar syrup and it's absolutely amaaziingg!!!!

I failed three batches as well- used a whole bag of tapioca starch to make oobleck. The issue is after adding 1/2 the tapioca starch to the boiling water/sugar, you need to cook on low long enough to get a shaggy dough started- for me it was more like 30-60 sec instead of 6-8 sec. Then add the second half of the tapioca. Don't cook too long though, if you're seeing transparent bits, you're going too far, get it off the heat asap.

I finally took the time to make this. overall, very good. But I learned a few things about this recipe: 1) the amount of starch is listed in the link, not said in the tutorial 2) if you don't have an extra pair of hands to help you make those pearls, set aside a couple of hours, it's very time-consuming 3) if you're going to cook all those tapioca pearls at one time, use a much bigger pot and don't let them boil without stirring often. I lost about 20% of my pearls at the bottom of the pot, which was a beast to get clean when I was done because I didn't stir (and I knew better, was being optimistic/tired from all the boba pearl rolling) 4) Twinings makes Earl Grey k-cup pods. I didn't know I had bought pods instead of regular tea bags until I opened the box, ready to make my tea (thankfully, I had a tea infuser, so I just poured it in there.) All that said, now knowing what to expect, I will definitely make this again, but I will devote a day simply to making the homemade boba pearls. This recipe makes a fair amount, but I love extra boba in my tea, so while I have all the ingredients/materials out, I may as well make as many as possible. Thanks for posting the recipe. And I enjoyed your presentation. Fun! 🙂
