Most people interpret this scene as a literal feel good moment enjoying the mundane life, but to me it really represents the bittersweetness of the film. The unfulfillment of life unlived, while you're struggle to appreciate it despite all the hardships. The feeling that everyday is a new start, filled with weariness, but also hope. It so perfect because it's not.

Also, he learned to feel again. With the addition of his niece to shake him out of his routine which he probably uses to cope with loss or grief of times past. The fact we are just dropped into his world with out background knowledge, is sublime.

I was in a... weird place in life - post break-up, feeling numb, lots of unresolved questions, lots of people to apologize to, general nothingnes. And then we went to cinema with my school to see this movie, and... Something snapped in me, I watched it all eagerly, and felt really emotional during this ending scene... The music, the colours, the cinematography - it all just hit me straight into my soul, it hit me into all of my uneasy spots, it hit into all numbness... And it taught me to love life, to take joy of it, and most importantly, to appreciate all the small things in life... And the music helped me a lot too - it still is with me, and really, makes a difference to life. Just a little story :)

The way I see it, this scene is sort’ve like an acceptance of pain and imperfection. I’ve seen a couple people say that this is his mask breaking, and the pain of his loneliness and isolation bleeding through his persona. But I feel that this scene is a reminder that in order for there to be good in life, bad must precede it. And coming to terms with that bad, and the arbitrary unfairness that life throws at us is necessary to be truly happy. I do genuinely think that he enjoys his routine and his life, and while he’s not exactly lonely, he does long for some kind of connection with someone. I think that’s why he values the little things about the people he meets, like the boys fondness for people’s ears, or the tic tac toe game. And while he’s clearly emotionally distressed here, he’s also smiling. He knows that he must accept and push through the painful areas of life to be able to fully enjoy the beautiful ones, and that’s a compromise he’s willing to except. While his days are perfect, he is not. And he’s okay with that. I think that’s what this scene is evoking.

The more I rewatch this scene I interpret it as this we all feel lonely in this world that is beautiful but can sometimes feel empty when you look at the world with its bright colors and accept your life will feel lonesome sometimes and that when you wake up it’s a bright new day to start your life again. At the end of the day, we all feel lonely it’s okay to be alone as long as you find a connection and let go of those emotions we are all just humans and this amazing film captures that beautifully.

This beautiful scene makes me feel that this man, Hirayama, feels kind of relief now that he knows he is not losing the woman he likes, as the woman's ex-husband reassured him that there is nothing going on between them, and also at his workplace the temporary turbulences have settled down by now. He doesn't have to do over shift or anything. So he is going back to his old ways of being content and in some way being happy with his life. He can continue performing his personal rituals like watching the trees, listening to old albums on his way to work etc., and extract happiness from the everyday little things. But then, there are some deep pain in his life, regarding his relationship with his parents and siblings, and also in other sectors of his life which are not revealed here. So Hirayama has accepted all these pain that life can offer but the act of acceptance does not mean that is does not hurt. It resurfaces time to time and he allows himself to cry it out. In this act of crying we see acceptance; and then he smiles at the same time, showing us that he knows the pain is there and he is okay keeping it that way. He does not fight it, does not go against it. He just lets it be. He allows life to play on him. In perfect days, we see a man who learned to let life happen.

This ending summazies him. The mask is coming off. Tryi g to be grateful for whst he has but not blind to whst he dosent have. My guess is he was in prison for a long time hence his simple regimented lifestyle. This is the root cause of his confixt with his family snd why he has a low paying job when he dosent need to. Holding up apprences to the very end but underneith punishing himself for past mistskes.

What doesn't he have?, i don't think he needs a lot of money or friends, he is fulfilled. Personally I don't think he would have been in prison. And the conflict with his family because of their different lifestyle choices.

The take away is that he was someone who came from either a rich background or was in a high position in a company. The life changing whiplash to making everyday meaningful and thinking everything has value probably is from his father slowly dying away which is hinted at. Probably suffering from dementia/old timers. Probably was doing the 9-5 100,000 salary lifestyle and realized everything in life was either aging or had gone without a second notice. So he gave up that life. Got something that was the bare minimum to survive and just began to live his life appreciating the small things in life we all don't give a second glance at. Probably was even the golden child in the family because the way the sister reacts to finding out he now cleans toilets.

@@jothiram7 I think he is a solitary man though. He gets happy after getting a kiss from a random girl, he "falls" in love (which I think he was just needy) with that barwoman, and he happiest during the movie is when he is with his niece. In order to live the simple life he has, he gave up on living with other people so his only friend ends up being a tree. idk

@Sashinah 4 ай бұрын
@@luxp5701 I really like all of your interpretations, but I really felt like the ending of the movie is not really a showcase of this character emotions, but it's just a showcase of the whole human experience and life in one take. He goes through crying, to laughing, to being numb, to laughing again, crying, etc etc. This two minute scene just shows how we all go through the ups and downs through life, but that's just a part of it and we really can't do anything about it, just feel it and enjoy the ride to our sunset.
