if you know your friend can't afford the dress, agree a budget she can afford, and pay the difference! I find it strange that it is an expectation that someone else chooses the dress I should wear and I'm expected to pay whatever the price is!

I agree because she knew this was going to be a problem for her friend and should have told her before shopping that she would pay the difference. And this should have to be done quietly so as not to upset the other bridesmaids. I know this is the trend for the bridesmaids to pay for they own dresses even if they don't like them but this plus paying for the bachelorette weekend as opposed to the bachelorette night out and bridal showers makes it punitive cost wise to be a bridesmaid. I am surprised the bride can get anyone to agree to be part of her wedding party.

I paid for one of my bridesmaid's dress in full. I actually let my family pick out the bridesmaid dresses. It turned out to be $300 and I didn't have the money to pay for it either but I did it anyway and I never asked her to pay me back. Just a bit of advice, when you pay for someone, don't ask them to pay you back. Just think of it as a gift bc they'll likely never pay you back, and that's when resentment can build and you don't want to lose a friend over a few bucks.

First of all, a real friend would never let her bestfriend to be humiliated in front of the whole world. The poor girl had to remind about her financial situation all the time. Second of all, the culture of making people buy a dress that the bride choses and making them pay for it is horrible, superficial and absolutely unacceptable. I think Brandon did say several times (1:06, 2:19) that the lace was more expensive and warned her about budget and also clearly recognized that the dresses were over budget, however his job is also to please the bride and show her what she is asking for (3:11). I think it would have been equally rude to tell the bride "no you can't look at those dresses because your friends and family are broke". I think he actually did a really good job of showing the bride "this is what you are looking for, this is what it costs, you'll have to decide if this is worth it" and then when she did the right thing and chose friendship/family over the dress, he gave her a good alternative that was within budget.

I think it depends on the situation. But yes if the bride wants a specific dress that she chooses, she should pay, or at least help her friend out. At my wedding i was prepared to pay for my bridesmaids, but they declined and said they would pay for their own dress because a wedding with 500+ guests is expensive, told my bridesmaids that they can choose they’re own dress in as long as it’s champagne/beige color. I told them to let me know if needed help to pay. They all showed up stunning ! I know and trust my girls so I didn’t see the dresses until the day of the wedding. When we came home from our honeymoon I found out 3 of them couldn’t pay for they’re dresses so the rest chipped in. I'm a bridesmaid in my friend's wedding, and the dresses she chose were well under $100. Even then, her and her groom were willing to pay for it or pay the difference if someone couldn't. This is not the place to go for a dress within their budget. If you're going to go and you've got someone who can't afford the price range, you should be willing to pay the extra or go somewhere where the prices are reasonable.

It was so much easier to tell my bridesmaids the specs for their dresses (navy, short sleeve, knee length) and then let them pick out whatever they liked and could afford. They looked fabulous and they all complemented each other while looking individually stunning!

I paid for my bridesmaids' dresses and told them to wear whatever shoes they wanted. It never even occurred to me to ask them to pay for dresses that I wanted for MY wedding that they would probably never wear again. I completely disagree with this cultural norm we have in our society where bridesmaids are expected to pay. That needs to change.

In the UK as far as I know, the Bride pays. I was broke and both my dress and my bridesmaid's came from a charity shop. They had been worn once and I paid to have them altered to fit exactly. Mine was £100 and my bridesmaid around 60. I wore my Mother's veil. My day was filled with love and was 33 years ago. Trust me, don't make yourself miserable for a dress you will wear once ❤

I thought so at first, but I think she was just trying to acknowledge that she found it affordable because she has more resources. Looks like this bride is stepping into a more comfortable lifestyle that could leave her friend out of more than just dresses. Miss Two-Incomes was quick to support the cheaper gown when it came out. When I chose my bridesmaid dresses, I bought dresses off the rack at a chain boutique after prom for thirty dollars. My girls were all graduating students and all over the map. They couldn’t do fittings, so I got a long A-line with spaghetti straps and a lace up back. I had one of them come try it on and brought my fiancé for second opinion. They were hq taffeta gowns with lovely embroidery. And they were in my colour. Nicer than what I see on this show. Everyone looked fantastic and were grateful for the budget. Of course, my SIL still managed to make problems by neglecting to pick up her dress from the layaway and we almost had an odd one out. There is always one girl that you have to monitor constantly, no matter how easy you make it for them. That’s life. There are so many special moments that you don’t realize at the time. The dresses, even the bride’s, are so quickly forgotten. She was wise to keep her friend. The way the world goes, she may find herself a struggling single parent again one day. Haven’t seen the man in twelve years and don’t care to, but I still have the pearls my best friend took off her own neck because she couldn’t afford a “real” gift. Don’t get so caught up in the hype that you lose your greatest treasure.

Are dresses really that expensive in US and UK? Also she was so proud for attending 13 weddings but here in india that's the average number of weddings we attend in a year

I am from Germany and 200€/$/£ are very expensive. I wouldn't demand anything from my maid of honor or bridesmaid especially when they can't afford it. In Germany the guestlist is normally from 30 to 100 people (not looking at corona circumstances) so closest friends and family. How big are normally the weddings you go to?

@Bella Vandeale : In India guestlist is minimum 500 and can expand upto 2500 for middle class people. Here weddings are a huge deal...if you miss out on inviting your far off relations, they'll cry hoarse for the rest of their lives. I tried to have an in family wedding with 300 guests(extended family both sides which was a failure and us bride and groom did not get to try all the dishes bcoz they were over due to extra uninvited guests) and a reception with 1000 people. I still meet people who have grudge that they were not invited for wedding but instead for reception even after 6 years.

Can only speak for the UK, but it’s a really wide range. I’ve seen weddings with bridesmaids in their own best dresses and weddings that the couple were paying off 5 years later. But as another commenter noted, in the UK it’s more usual for the bridal party to pay for the bridesmaids dresses which is much fairer.

@@bellavandeale8895 well in india a normal middle class family will have around 500 to 1000 guests and if they want a big fat wedding then there would be easily more than 1000 or 2000 guests And weddings in this pandemic with lots of restrictions are having 100 to 200 guests that with verg close relative and friends Indian weddings are really huge if you compare indian weddings to western ones you will be shocked it's celebrated like a festival over here

I got a similar lace dress on Amazon for less than $40. It's not like anybody rewears a brides maid dress, so why spend so much money!? A previous wedding I was in, the bride wanted the bridesmaid to wear a dress that was around $350. None of us could come close to affording that price, but it's the dress the bride was set on so the bride paid for the dresses.

*In that situation, either the bride or the 2 income bridesmaid who was dismissing the $100 extra cost should have simply said, "I'll cover whatever it is over the agreed upon $200 maximum with no worries, hon." Drama averted. I'm the low income friend so I KNOW how that feels...and they leave you out to dry and make you say it instead of offering to help.*
