honestly for a NL run my recommandation for ideas is: Infra -> Explo -> defensive-> Offensive. as the first two give a policy for +1 dev in colonies (+age abailty means 6 free dev per colony) and with both offensive and defensive you can easily get 80% defence in your provinces and 80% siege ability. So you are an absolute monster in base racing.

I quite enjoyed mercenary ideas as first military idea group into defensive for the development meme. Offensive is probably overall better but at that point I would want espionage for the really quick sieges.

I think instead of taking the tier2 gov reform switching to the dutch tier one is better (you have cultural access no need to be the Netherlands). You get access to the special ships (light and transports combined with extra trade modifier) and have the pluto ideas early. Worth to mention later you get buffs for the marines with gov reform and burger privilege. In my run I had larger sailor pool than manpower with ships 3times over forcelimit and constantly repairing (govreform), so I could run full marine infantry with cannons.

You dont really need pluto ideas early and it seems to be a waste of 50 gov reform since you'll get that reform switch for free anyway. Whatever works best for you ;) I have part 2 recorded already, you'll see it worked pretty well for us!

@@ZlewikkTV yep did the achievement today. Until I could become great moravia it was really exciting. But was a bit dissappointed that there was no new mission tree to come along with it. First tried as Moravia but that was infinitely harder than Nitra because you are immediately hussite and everyone hates you and/or wants your provinces^^ As Nitra I was lucky, got Poland+Lithuana as ally and then it was basically a piece of cake since they couldn't get any provinces themselves so I could get as much as possible without risking the alliance. They stay my ally until the bitter (for them) end when I needed Krakow

I like how much the netherlands can change depending on who forms it Utrecht can make it a theocracy Peasants republic with both frisias And you can either do traditional netherlands form with burgundian junior partner nations or be extremely cursed and choose gelre to form them via inheritance

My preferred first idea group as Holland is exploration, you only need one colonist if you beeline the horn of Africa and grab Christmas Island through range boosts, the conquest of Malaya can be done purely militarily. Grab the occasional second colonist from parliament, fight the other colonisers for their african colonies to control the trade nodes, and you get a cheap and easy colonial empire.

I've also been playing a Netherlands campaign opening up with exploration and i actually managed to be the first in the new world. Also the colonisation game is way more fun with conquest of paradise turned off. But even with colonisation taking longer because of that, the once upon a hill national idea of the united crowns comes way too late to be useful at tech 18, i wish they kept the dev cost reduction instead.

I personally think it would be too much, especially as these things are not always well calculated for quality + when there are a lot of enemies the tech pop up could also be misleading when one small OPM has a better tech

Sure, but I see a few disadvantages with that: 1. You can use it in 2nd war so around 1466, which means you cannot starts annexing it until 1476, which means you won't really form Netherlands before 1482-1485 2. You pay extra dip points for taking a subject instead of lands with conquest cb. Just brabant is 150 dip points. This, combined with cost of annexing a subject (aeound 300 dip points) is not really convincing me when first idea group is espionage (dip group) 3. The AE difference is not huge, we are talking about around 25 AE for Brabant vassal (as an example), while same 3 provinces taken directly is 35 ae Combined all these I'm not much convinced it's really a good idea, even with a bit of less ae and extra troops coming from the subject

I literally haven’t played since 1.31 but my unfinished game was the Netherlands on Hard Ironman and I intended to play tall and focus trade and colonization. When I last played I owned every province in the new world, 50% of Africa, all Oceania, all of India, every island available in game, and I had Vassals/PU’s on all of Europe where everyone is a similar colour of orange (Bologna for Italy, Catalonia for the Parts of Iberia I don’t own directly, Finland for Scandinavia, Bohemia for Czech/Hungary land, Nevers [used to be orange] for Southern France. And my direct European holdings are literally like Germany at peak expansion in WWII. North/West France, lowlands, all Germany, Prussia, Baltic, Alps, and the Isles for good measure. The year was like 1750 and I still think about that game often. (My gaming PC is broken :,( rip ) Edit: Oh! And I did still play tall. I’m pretty sure every Lowland Province was min. 40 dev and every English Channel province min. 30dev: 1tax,15prod,14man.

I came here on the back of my last two Netherlands runs where I had all Low Countries provinces just short of 1500, and I was wondering what nonsense you got up to to take all that in half the time- then I saw you didn't have the entire low countries, just a quick form on Netherlands. Might just be me, but I prefer getting the whole area before forming the Netherlands just so I don't have to fight the HRE to claim the rest of my rightful lands.
