2:15 Long story short, Predacon leader Megatron nearly kills Optimus Prime in the past, hoping he could wipe out the Maximals in the future. In a last ditch effort to save their ancestor, while Rhinox was repairing a half-dead Optimus Prime, Optimus Primal pulled out the Matrix of Leadership (Which contained Optimus Prime's spark), and temporarily fused it with his spark, transforming Transmetal Optimus Primal into Optimal Optimus, resulting in him both saving Optimus Prime from death, and keeping the Maximals from never existing.

You remember right Jobby, The Predacons and Maximals found the Arch and Megatron got the bright idea to destroy Optimus Prime to prevent him and his Autobots from winning the Great War. This caused a time storm but thanks to Rhinox's quick thinking they managed to get themselves out of the time storm and go to repair Optimus Prime. Since his spark wouldn't survive the repairs Optimus Primal took Prime's spark into his Transmetal body mutating it into Optimal Optimus. Megatron did also take the original Megatron's spark which gave him his dragon mode. Rhinox fixed Optimus Prime and they put his spark back in his body while forcing Megatron to return the spark he stole from his ancestor. They both ended up keeping these forms for the rest of the series. Ironically enough in the final battle of Beast Machines Megatron used this body.

After all this time I can finally say I'm a proud owner of the original optimal optimus. It is a really fun figure, and the alt modes absolutely DESTROY that of the POTP figure. Ironically I'd say that the ROBOT mode is the one that suffers the most, it feels a little disproportionate.

Despite having 4 modes, I think in the original series you only ever saw the gorilla mode and the truck mode once. Of course by season 3 the whole needing an alt mode to shield from energon was practically gone

So Jobby, I've been hemming and hawing, but as someone who LOVED his original Optimal Optimus I decided to dive in and picked this figure up and I think you'll be glad to know: they fixed the loose waist and thighs! Thighs are very tight to swivel and the waist now has a nice clicky rotation :) Backpack in gorilla mode is still kinda floppy but it sits a bit better than it looks like yours does, and the waist pins in a bit stronger without sacrificing rotation.

This is one awesome remake of Optimal Optimus and I loved Beast Wars back in the day. I think they need to do remake of the Transmetal 2 Dragon Megatron as well. The one they made back in 1999 was okay it just looked nothing like on the TV show in robot mode plus the size was way off.
