Learn how to take the golf club away in the backswing. The first move in the backswing we call the golf swing takeaway. For many golfers learning to get a great backswing takeaway feeling can transform the overall look and simplicity of your golf swing.
Learning how to take the club online on the backswing can prevent unnecessary compensations (faults) such as over the top and the opening and closing of the club face.
In this weeks golf lesson you will learn how to develop the feel necessary to do it every time with your driver swing and your iron swing.

ABOUT DANNY
-----------------------
Thanks for stopping by. I created this website as a resource just for you to support you on your golfing journey as I know how tricky learning this game can be…to say the least!
I personally found learning the game too long and difficult in the early days. I read all the books, watched all the videos but my game was not improving. Then after studying various forms of neuro science, motor learning, psychology and personal development in less than two years I went from struggling golfer to the final stage of the Open Championship.
On KZbin and my personal website (www.dannymaude.com) I will bring you the most up to date training, training that is getting tangible results for my clients right now. I don’t know where you are in your golfing journey, you could be just starting out or maybe your body isn’t as flexible as it once was or you’ve got ambitions to slash your handicap. Wherever you are I’ve created a place here you can learn, share your ideas, ask questions and get all the support you need to enjoy this great game.
Be prepared though. If its a quick fix you are after Im not your man. Here I will give you step-by-step advice that you can take straight to the practice ground and apply to the course but it will require you to get stuck in, screw up…a lot, practice some more and then watch those scores tumbleI’ve had the pleasure of coaching thousands of students all around the world and if you are up for the challenge and are ready to get in the game…LETS GO TO WORK!

Oh my God - I have been struggling with my game for, probably, 12 months. I have lost all consistency and, therefore, confidence. I have tweeked so many things in an effort to recover my swing and game that I have lost any semblance of my normal swing. Danny’s tips have helped BUT this video has just given me the best round of golf I have played in 1 year. I took a video of my swing after watching this from Danny and, sure enough, I was breaking my wrists at the start of the takeaway. I practiced Danny’s takeaway tips yesterday in my net here at home and today I hit 12 greens in regulation and 9 fairways from the tee. Danny, your a flipping marvel and a very generous individual to give up such time to us. I owe you big time. Do you like wine (as in French proper wine ;-) ) THANK YOIU DANNY MAUDE

Used this tip yesterday and others commented on the extra distance...from a 76 year old. Arms right to side at start of backswing and rotating head backwards made for a more fluid, stress free and powerful downswing. I think I will keep using this approach, as well as many others Danny outlines. I also found I had less pain in my back afterwards and today.

Wow! This videos speaks to me and what I believe are most of my issues. I've always felt that the backswing is the source of most of my problems, but In the lessons I've had, it's always about my grip or my follow through. I seem to get taught through band-aids rather than starting with the core problem. I so glad I discovered this video and many other that you have produced. I love your instruction style!!!

Major kudos and thank you for this lesson! Making sure I'm taking the club away parallel to my feet and the target-line, as well as making sure the club face is at a 45° angle, has made an ENORMOUS difference in my ball striking, both my driver AND irons. After watching this video, I noticed Justin Thomas does this on all his practice swings. This is such a key concept.

Superb drill Danny, tried it today during a slow bank holiday round. Being a lefty who plays right handed, found it very easy to anchor the left arm and simply turn back and through. Instantly got better in to out path and distance. Many thanks.

Nicely explained Danny. It’s too easy to get into the habit of letting the mass control you rather than the other way round as you rightly say. Definitely one for the practice ground this afternoon. It would certainly be great to get back into control of the swing. It slips away so easily if you don’t keep an eye on these points and you end up frustrated in no man’s land! Many thanks - as ever.

I’ve always managed the first part of the takeaway correctly but then suffered from a too vertical swing plane. The penny has finally dropped by reminding me I should throw the palm of the right hand up - this improves the swing plane and stops me coming over the top in my downswing - sorted👍

Danny, I’ve been following you for about a year now. There is a lot of content out there but you are an excellent instructor and in my opinion the best out there. I’ve also been working on this ‘one piece takeaway’ , it’s easier said than done but this video along with some of your previous videos helps to consolidate this. When I get it right my ball striking is so much better. Thank you.

I've already commented on how valuable this video is below. I wanted to add one subtle point that Danny makes that I think is quite crucial to mastering his takeaway. Danny talks about "putting a slight crimp in your wrist at address". I've found that if you don't crimp the wrist a little bit, then it is hard to take the driver straight back and to use your left arm as a "lever". Whereas if you put in the crimp, the straight back/lever motion seems quite natural. After about 18 inches to 2 feet of backward motion, I then hinge my right wrist to take the driver up and begin loading the weight on the right side. That seems to set me up well when I come down the impact is much better and the driver is much straighter. Whereas not using the crimp seems to make the takeaway motion much rougher and shorter and bad things begin to happen. (It also feels quite jerky and strange). Not sure completely why the "no-crimp" does this but I speculate that its because the downward motion is off-center? Anyway, my primary goal in my golf game right now is trying to remember the mechanics mentioned in this video and repeat them as closely as possible.

Your hints have proven to be easy to understand, practice and adopt as a Senior golfer however my biggest challenge is accuracy of my green approach shots both distance and dispersement What is best advice for a 24 handicapper (who believes 18 is achievable!) getting to understand each club distance when the options are the traditional range who use questionable quality range balls

Thanks Danny. Another great lesson. I am not doubting what you say, as I can see that all makes very good sense, but what is the difference between breaking the wrists on take away, as opposed to at the top of the back swing? I remember once reading to feel the correct position at the top, you should break wrists fully at address, and then just turn back. Obviously that's just a "feel" technique, not for the course. As I say, I know what you are saying is 100% correct, I am just trying to understand it. Thanks

I have probably tried every backswing move there is, yet I continue to struggle with solid contact and yardage. Still topping out at 180 yards. When my next club gets me only 130 yards max, it's pretty hard to par holes longer than 310 yards. And I already play forward. Thank you for the video. I will try it out.

Just revisited this video. Superb instruction - if I had had you as a coach I would have learnt the golf swing years ago. One quick question if I may. I seem to remember in one of your videos you making a comment on having a slight amount of wrist cock at address - is that correct as I find it certainly helps after the 1st parallel? Also, would you recommend a small amount of toe up with driver and addressing out of the toe? Thanks, Mike.

Yes, I like it as it helps to counterbalance the weight of the club head

Danny Ive obviously been doing this wrongs I would swing the driver as I do the Irons. In other words I hinge and cock my wrists after the initial takeaway to get into the top of the back swing. This looks more like a hinge behind or almost a flatter plane?
@DanielMaude

Driver is usually a little wider but it’s absolutely ok to set your wrists
