Perfect Handle Screwdriver Restoration

When this rusty old screwdriver turned up in a friends basement, I just had to have it. Although they may be practical, we are hardly spoiled for looks by today's plasticky tools. These "perfect handle screwdrivers" were made around a hundred years ago and although the sales talk about perfect handling in different temperatures is most likely bullshit, they are still simply gorgeous.
I gave this one some attention an now it is ready for its next hundred years!

It is so nice to see your restorations, where you don't use a 3D printer, Huge vertical mill, TiG welder, industrial metal lathe , laser engraver and CNC router! Simple, straight forward and achievable for a regular person. I'm going to be making my own marking knife, scratch awl and ruler stop, due to you! THANKS!

Pretty cool! I was out metal detecting in my backyard and found one of these screw drivers buried about a foot under ground. I figure it's about 1930s or 40s. So cool to see another one. Mine is untouched. I like antique to stay antique

That was a beautiful restoration! Those handles fit so well! I think the one step I would have added is to epoxy the handles and the pins in place. New subscriber. I'm also a member of Vintage Tool Restoration. That's how I found this video to watch. Thanks for sharing!

Hey, I’m glad you liked it. I wanted to avoid epoxy because I tend to use it too often and it sort of didn’t fit the ‘period of the tool’. But it would of course have been an option.

Add some tape and you can prevent chipout when drilling the holes for the pins.

I finally sub'd...for the quality peening! ;-P Nice work on the handles and appreciate the meditative sanding and hand work more than you realize. Just about done going through your vids and enjoying your progression on the quality of videography. L@@king forward to more.

Other restorations use brass pins and epoxy and buff it glossy. But this is a tool, not jewelry.

Yes, I like epoxy, but I don’t think it belongs in a 1930ies screwdriver.

Nice job, won't the oak turn black after a while? Being that it is in contact with the steel

Nice restoration, but not sure why wooden handles needed replacing. My eyesight isnt that great, but I saw no reason to make new ones when all that was needed appeared to be a good sanding and maybe a good wood filler.
@imadethischannel
@imadethischannel 3 жыл бұрын
Hey, the handles were cracked and chipped off in several places. Wood filler wouldn’t have been very nice.

I'll bet if epoxy existed back then, they would have used it. The perfect handled screwdriver got a bad rap, because the wood always loosened up.

I am currently restoring a perfect handle. I am wondering if I should heat treat the tip. I saw another video on YT where the individual in that video did choose to heat treat and temper the tip. I am wondering what others' opinions are on whether this should be done on a vintage screwdriver like this? Thanks
@imadethischannel
@imadethischannel 8 ай бұрын
Hey, thanks for watching the video. I have also seen the hardening and tempering done in other videos. But I didn’t want to mess with mine, especially because I have no idea what alloy was used here. The correct heat treatment depends very much on the type of steel.

@@imadethischannel thank for reply! I felt the same way I decided to pass on the heat treatment for just this reason.
