The red gas tank was made for 1970. They changed the dsitrubtor in 1971 as well. This is fabulous condition. If it means anything it sounds like it might have a small air leak leaning out probably the #1, left cylinder. That was very common. I raced these for two seasons. Incredibly powerful motor, but had soft steel frames. Consider that they did not have reed valves or anything else, just conventional piston port design. Ran well on regular gas. Disk brakes came out in 1972.,

I had a 1971 ,blue h-1 ,and my clutch would slip alot like in your vidio ,not enough friction plate surface,Barnett plates fixed it!

I had the same blue '71. Bought it as a used mechanical basket case in '76. I brought it back to life and rode it a lot then sold it for near the new price.

bought a brand new one in 1969,paid 1104.00 out the door,I waited 3 months,received a 1970 red,white model like yours.Use synthetic 2 cycle oil.I did a lot of fun stuff with it.I would love to restore one,maybe a slight warm over on the motor,chambers,pistons,port work.

yea, I don't know where he gets the notion it's a 72. the red and white ones were a mid year release in 70. commonly refereed to as 701/2. I owned on just like this. I too quickly found synthetic oil and also found you could cut the oil pump back without hurting then and it cut way down on the smoke. How do I know it won't hurt them? I took my 72 H-2 from Ohio through the southwest, around the 4 corners area, grand canyon, las vegas. LA up highway 1 to san francisco and back down to the mexican border, and the southern route back to ohio. also, running hard throttle you don't need the clutch for upshifts. hold some pressure up on the shifter, turn the throttle of and back on as quick as you can and it will shift.

Hey, well made video. Brought back memories. My first bike was the '69 250 Samurai. Great little bike. Then I graduated to a Laser blue '71 500. (It wasn't nearly as fast as your model, kawasaki had detuned the 500 by then). A year later got the '72 H2 750. Wow, that was a wheelie machine. Years later I had gotten a great used Peacock Gray bike like yours. Took the clogged up exhaust baffles out one day. I found out that 500 would wheelie like my 750 lol. I couldn't believe it. I almost flipped it.

Thanks for the answer ! Maybe because the bike was first registrated in 1972, who knows. Anyway, as if you maybe know had the in 1972 build H1´s a different gasoline tank, even the gasoline tank from 1971 bikes was different from the 1969/70.

The first bike I ever rode was my girlfriend's 125 Honda. Then I bought a '68 350 Honda when she bought a new '73 Honda 360. She took off on a month long trip and when she came back, I had a '71 H 1 that already had expansion chambers and K & N air cleaners. That bike was scary fast, especially since it was only the third bike I had ever ridden. Wish I had it back...

Betcha it'd run damn close to any 500cc bike today, in a straight line drag race. My buddy had a 1970 with same red color, but the 1970 had black stripes, iirc. Anyway, these were so much quicker than any 500cc bike anyone had ever ridden before, it was almost unbelievable! I rode it at the strip once, against a 650cc Triumph Bonneville. Back then, any 3 cylinder 2 stroke jumped 1 class up, which is why I was racing a 650cc bike. I dumped the clutch, and the front end went straight up!!! Of course, the Triumph took off straight for the finish line. I let the front end down, and took off after him, at least 75-100ft ahead of me. At the traps, it was so close I didn't know who won. So as I slowed, I looked in the mirror to see that I had caught him!!! Probably won by a foot, or less!!! Man, that guy was PISSED!!!! He wanted my buddies bike to get torn down, claiming it couldn't be stock, and be that fast. But it was stock. And it was that fast. Actually, I think the 750 was the Widowmaker......

Not a perfect restoration. Restore means bring back to original. It didn't come with polished aluminum everywhere. But I like this better!
