Good question. It depends on the context and your desired outcome. You can raise a pig without grain feed, but the quality won’t be what you’re use to.

@@Rae_eLLe Gotcha, I understand better now. A “natural” feeding tends to give you pork that would have the same carcass quality (meat/fat) of that of a wild boar. It’ll be lean meat. Often times you won’t even be able to make bacon because there would be little to no fat. This is a VERY COMMON mistake homesteaders make.

@@Rae_eLLe I always recommend to start out with grain feed if someone doesn’t have any prior experience raising pigs. Doing that for a year or two will give you a better understanding of pig nutrition and the breed you’ll need. Trying to do something alternative without a solid foundation of experience in common husbandry practices will often lead to a disappointing experience… I’d HATE for that to happen to you. You can add other alternative feeds to a already complete formulated feed diet, but usually no more than 20% should be alternative (depending on the breed).
