Rice cakes are supposed to be chewy. The Korean BBQ flavor is not like American BBQ sauce but the flavor of the marinate for the meats when you go out for Korean BBQ. That is why it isn't smokey but sweet due to to the soy sauce, garlic, sugar, + sesame oil marinate.

Yeah, I just don’t think he will like rice cakes - a crunchy rice cake sounds weird lol. I will say if you overcook a rice cake and it becomes mushy it really becomes disappointing

Fun fact! Fried chicken wasn't a thing in Korea until the Korean War. African American service men stationed in South Korea brought and taught the Korean people how to fry chicken and the rest is history.

the tteokbokki (the rice cakes) are definitely supposed to be chewy. So if you don't like the texture, don't bother getting them in a sit down place, because they will be exactly the same. I think they're either a you love them or not type of food. :)

I take those same rice cakes and pan fry them then dip in sugar (occasional treat). The outside gets a little crisp, bit still chewy on the inside. I think that's what they were going for, but with the sauce and travel they won't stay crispy long.

Korean rice cakes are chewy and a comfort food for them similar to how Americans like Mac n Cheese. If you eat them fresh they may be slightly crispier on the outside but the center will always be chewy. Daeboki is an acquired taste for most Americans.
