😅wowza! That was a TON of information with soooo many numbers I even took some notes …. You raised a lot of good points and I’m grateful. Thanks so much for your time and effort to share your knowledge and research with us! I’ve recently joined a quilting group (Quilters By The Sea) AND the Project Linus local chapter in an attempt to use my skills for a good cause. The sizes for Project Linus are smaller than yours but understandable so, because these quilts are donated to younger children in need. Just wanted to put it out there to all of you quilters reading this comment…. If you make smaller quilts you can donate them to your local Project Linus organization. Here are the sizes: NICU = 36” x 36” Baby = 38” x 43” Toddler = 38” x 43-50” Kids = 38-45” x 50-60” Thanks ! -Crafty Julie

My I also inform those who have sons. Not only do college students not use top sheets, but I know from my son and my speaking with other mom’s of boys..they sleep “ON TOP” of those quilts! What does that mean? It means that the center of those quilts get very worn and the thread gets broken from the weight of his body and his twist and turns! This is very hard on those hand quilted quilts. Because I and my family are hand quilters, not sure machine quilted quilts would hold up better..maybe. When my son brought the quilt to me, a few years late and asked if his favorite quilt could be repaired. I laughed and said son that quilt has served its purpose..choose another❤❤(KH)

Living up north, the rule of thumb is to dress in layers so you can remove or add according to the temperature. That’s what a top sheet is for, I sleep with a top sheet, lightweight blanket, and then the comforter on top. That way I can throw off as many layers as I want to reach the right degree of comfort.

Just finished listening to your piece on quilts for college students & theirXL bed. Perfect timing for me as I was going to start my grandson’s quilt today! Very much doubt he’s the type to straighten his bed or use the top sheet unless his mom were to make the bed and even then, not sure she uses one! So, thank one so much. Love your site. I’ve been using shirts for years but never to your frequency or worked out such specifics. So helpful. In fact, I didn’t talk about this much. I began quilting years ago, when there more vocal “quilt police” about. Thank you, I’ve learned so much.

I make all my twin quilts 70 by 90 and they are perfect for wrapping your body and tucking your feet in. I also design my own quilts and make them so you easily recognize the top and or bottom from the sides. This makes it so easy to jump under them quickly. Very important for nap time😊.

We did not have risers under our dorm beds years ago, and the frames had metal springs. This meant there was just a mattress on top, making for a low bed overall. Yes, they were against the wall. A really wide quilt would have been a real issue. The one I made for myself that summer worked great. The only problem I ever encountered was the year that I decided to have satin sheets. My friends would slide all over when they came and sat on it to visit.

I discovered with quilts, I didn't need top sheets most of the time either. That could be because I often use a sheet for quilt backings. The other thing is my son told me his quilt, a bargello, was too heavy. So I made him a T-shirt quilt with light weight interfacing and a sheet backing. He loves it and uses it all the time. Thanks for your wonderful videos!

Cathy, I Love the idea of the over-sized COVERS. I have the correct size for the fitted sheet, but I buy the next size up for my TOP sheet. That way I don't get any air drafts. I quit using top sheets several months ago. When traveling Europe last December I became aware that top sheets are not standard there. They prefer to use a duvet cover instead. After I returned home I learned that it is a growing trend in the US now. Having been a top sheet user my entire life my brain needed to understand why this is custom for some and a growing trend here. The answer was simple yet surprising. Top sheets can restrict your feet. As a tall person with now liberated feet, I'll never go back to top sheets. :).

Interesting! When I make the bed (rarely, except after washing the sheets!) I have to untuck Paul's side because he can't stand to have his feet bound by a tucked sheet--so for you tall men, apparently that's a THING!

The top sheet thing is a huge deal for me. First off, ick! You know they’re not washing the quilt or blanket every week, but there’s no sheet to protect it?! Also I recently stayed in a hotel with a big puffy comforter in a duvet-and no top sheet. And the room was taking forever to cool off. I can’t sleep with no covers at all but the comforter was far too warm. What are they thinking???

Great video! I agree with reducing the width from 72", but I think a length of 80" isn't enough for a standard twin bed, much less an XL. I like to make my twin sized quilts somewhere in the area of 64 to 66 inches wide by 88 to 90 inches long. That way, if the user ever actually makes their bed, it will be long enough to drape over the end about as much as it drapes over the sides. Of course, your mileage may vary, but that's my two cents on the subject.

I've always used a top sheet. I've even used the top sheet as quilt backing. It can be done. If you go that route and you buy the sheets to fit the bed, your problem is solved. With different thickness of mattresses, for any other size, you have to measure. I replaced my queen and had to go buy new sheets. I also now have a longer drop measurement for my quilts. Normally, a quilt would overhang the bed by 12 inches on three sides. If you tuck, you have to add an additional 10" to the length. There used to be a great size quart on AllPeopleQuilts, but that disappeared. I also made small tags, if I even remember to put one on, because I like them to be not only reversible but multidirectional. If you are making a quilt for someone that doesn't wash, that is important. I only wash mine once a year and I think that is enough.

I live in a very small apartment with a loft bed with a twin XL mattress against one wall, much like the setup you have there. Just like you, I want to be fully covered and I hate the air gaps so I always aim to make my throw and bed quilts at least 65"x85. If I put one on the bed I really like that it's "too wide" because I use that extra width to fold over a bit on the wall side and shove it down between the mattress and the wall... That way the quilt is anchored and won't fall off the bed no matter how many times I roll over. If I don't anchor it this way, it will at some point fall off the open side and I'll have to climb down to retrieve it, carry it up and rearrange it back on the bed (not fun in the middle of the night (or any time, to be honest)). Anchoring the quilt against the wall also makes it a lot easier to make the bed if/when the mood strikes.

I agree 58”- 60” wide and 80” long would be perfect. The way I see it is the width of the bed, 38/39”, and then determine the drop on both sides. So, a 60” wide quilt will give you a 10 or 11” drop. I feel this is an easier visualization for designing the quilt. Great video.

Personally I generally aim for about a 15” drop on each side/end of the mattress, except on the length I start measuring just a few inches up under the pillow. Not all the way to the top of the mattress. Cause you don’t pull the quilt up over your head at night. 😁 That has been my rule of thumb.

Good morning Cathy! 80” for a regular twin is a good length, however, for a twin XL add another 5”. For those tall sleepers, their feet once that quilt starts to burrito around them will cause their feet to stick out at the end especially if they are not using a top sheet for blanket underneath. Plus when they do make the bed (hahaha, sarcasm) it looks better with just a little extra length for the drop. I am in the process of planning a new quilt for my son’s room and his bed is lofted off the ground. So I am planning on a quilt that is about 56-58” wide and 82-84” long so little to no tucking in is required. My kiddo is a burrito sleeper so he needs the extra length for his ski feet. Thanks again for another great video, and I loved the Wednesday Adam’s pic! It has finally begun to dry out up here in MN and we are getting hot woohoo! Have a lovely weekend!

I have a queen size bed with a 10" foam topper so I have to make my width longer then the length, plus I have to have at least one foot out from under the quit so like the shorter length.

This is a topic I am working on, lately. My parents have switched to a split king adjustable bed. I like duvet inserts, but also quilts. So I'm working on a combination of the two. Twin XL Duvet inserts are 68x92. The emphasis is usually on the length, reducing the "performance pressure" on the width.

Thank you. Most of my family are in the short to medium height range. So the 75" length is more than adequate. I can not imagine using a used sheet for the backing. I would rather buy a new sheet set. The bottom sheet and pillow cases can be used by the quilt receiptiant.

I always wanted bigger quilts than the bed. I used large twin or even queen size on my college beds. I move a lot in sleep and cannot abide with air pockets opening up. I always use a top sheet. I usually roll back the blanket because I’m hot. When I was a teenager, I never made my bed. When I moved into the dorm, I always made my bed. I couldn’t stand being in that little room, sitting on an unmade bed. Or worse, someone would visit and sit on my sheets. Yuck! The rest of the room was a mess but my bed was always made. You made a good point about full beds. I’ve found that a lot of students move to apartments in their sophomore or junior year. Most college student apartments seem to have full beds. Not as much extra room is needed to avoid the gap in a full because the bed is wider. The full bed may not be against the wall. So many variables. Against the wall or not? Regular or xl? Box springs or wire springs?

I like that your title says Dorm and you give great reasons for your opinions... however, dorm life is usually only one year. My takeaway from this is to think of it as a long "lap" quilt that they will put on their first college bed and then cherish forever when they get an adult sized bed. I'm curious about what size daughter #2 will request...
@TheCatBirdQuilts
@TheCatBirdQuilts 23 күн бұрын
Daughter #2 wanted hers to be at least the same size as daughter #1---but she insists that there is no such thing as a "too big" quilt! Her rationale for that opinion is, "you just roll up in it and pile it all up on the bed!" So there you go! (also, preference is irrational. 😉)

The only way to get my kids to use a quilt is to use minky as the backing and flannel as the batting. The quilt is then instantly soft and drapey. The flannel helps the minky not to move around when quilting but doesn’t add any stiffness. It washes well. If it is to be used it has minky (usually from thrifted blankets. If it’s for decoration it doesn’t.

1) I got stuck with a "basketball bed" in college. This 5' 2" gal didn't need that "big boy" bed, so my comforter and fitted sheet never reached the end. Was in Southern California, so it was cold for my toes only a couple months a year. I had to fold over a blanket at the end of my bed, to keep my "easily cold feet" warm. So, this started my habit of wearing socks to bed. 🏀🛌🧦 2) My friend went for a summer intern program in Europe and discovered the no top sheets. That's disgusting! You wash your sheets (fitted/top) to clean the body "dirt" from sleeping between the sheets. Without a top sheet, the bottom of the quilt is becoming dirty. I doubt if people wash their quilts weekly and in hot water. Imagine how dirty the quilt is if only washed bi-annually? If you are in a European hotel, then are you sharing your "body dirt" with the last sleeper? 🧐 3) I tend to just make lap quilts for people - a snuggle quilt is the goal. My Mom commented that she loved to fold my snuggle quilt (made super heavy per her request) at the end of the bed and pull up when it is super cold. After her passing, I received the quilt back, so I do the same in the middle of the night and think of Mom.❣

Until about 8 minutes in. lol..,,golly it’s so much overthinking. 😂😂😂😂 I think for me, I make what I like, add some borders or sashing if I’m feeling it needs more. I don’t like sheets on my backs either, because I’m a matchy girl. It’s fine tho. There’s room for everyone, overthinker or not. I guess I’m more into how the overall project turns out art wise than whether the person using it has to adjust it to their bed. I know…boo me. 😂

I am completely weird. I am 5'9" and I want every quilt (or blanket) I sleep under to be long enough to cover me from my feet to my fingers-but I sleep with my hands extended above my head so that works out to be an impractical 98 inches (I usually round up to 100) and because I move a lot and I fear the air-gap I make them a full 108 wide. If I am sleeping on a twin, I fold it in half and drape the whole mattress with it until it is time to sleep... and then I make a nest situation to sleep. Any other mattress gets much the same treatment. So if I make a quilt for others I go through a lot of weird calculations based on how they sleep or I make them a throw quilt 😂😅

Absolutely NO air gap! Perhaps I will start saying out loud in the middle of the night "Air Gap, air gap". Wonder if that would make a difference......When my boys were preschoolers I made them "quilts" that were fabric the liked on top and flannel on the back. That way they could make there beds (sortof) and didn't have to deal with a top sheet. And the washed well. I like the idea of a sheet for backing. Might do that for my littlest grand girls.
