Coming from a multi racial background. My Grandmother who was Italian fell in love with a Black Man from Louisville Kentucky & I remember her telling me stories about how they had to sneak around & meet in secret. & when they would meet up he would take her to clubs where he knew a lot of people & they didn’t mind seeing them together they were people about love & wanted to be free for who ever they fell in love with. & my grandmother had an amazing voice she would sing in the clubs one of the first white women to sing at the Apollo theater as well & she would dance with my grandfather. To swing, just everything of there time. They always played the swing music & music from the 50’s & 60’s & 70s. They got married & had 6 children. One her daughters who is my mother, fell in love with a Puerto Rican man & in those times it was the same racism but being from the 60s no one was taking that anymore people found there voice & fought even more for freedom & to stop the racism. My mom was rebellious like her mother she didnt care & had me & my brother by the Puerto Rican man she fell in love with. Music is spiritual, its where everyone meets & feels free to express themselves & the feeling the music gives people it’s universal everyone comes together. & of course the chemistry between a man & woman you could never beat that you can literally see people falling in love out on a dance floor. So put on whatever music you love & just enjoy dance & be you. & fall for whoever you love.

My great grandparents had a collection of swing and jazz albums. (Gran-Granny was a flapper, too!) When I was too young to know what I was doing my Gran-Granny would dance to this music and I would imitate her until I knew the steps and the turns. She would laugh and clap and kiss me when I finally got it right. Now that she's gone I sometimes get teary-eyed thinking of what a joyful person she was. I will always love swing as much as I loved her and watching her dance... with a cigarette in one hand and a glass of gin on ice in the other. She lived to be 107yrs old!

I am now 77 and used to frequent the London Hammersmith Palais in my youth circa 1958-65. The main band was Lou Praeger, plus another guest band on two bandstands. I was fortunate to see 'live' Jack Hylton, Ambrose (was actually several orchestras), plus Glenn Miller (without the man, but again several bands). Then were the Squadronnaires, and at concerts Louis Armstrong, Jack Parnell, Eric Delaney, Billy Cotton (used to have a Sunday morning radio show on the BBC as well), Harry Roy, Benny Goodman. Saw one of the last, if not THE last concert of Ella Fitzgerald in Paris, where she was almost totally blind, but still swinging. Saw the live concert of Lionel Hampton - in Luton, UK of all places, where his 22-piece Orchestar (with three drummers no less) introduced what they called 'The Big Beat' which was the bridge to Rock n Roll. 'Sunday Night at the London Palladium' was THE live TV programme and through that I saw Judy Garland, Billie Holiday, and a host of others. Yep, a great age to enjoy music in, but not much else, which I suppose is one reason why it was so important in otherwise pretty drab lives.

Returning for a couple of further comments. It should be remembered that for a long time after WW2 in London at least, radio was the Number one entertainment and news source, and supplied by the BBC. Sunday lunchtimes from about Midday to 1500 hrs was mostly music, starting with Forces favorites requested by troops still stationed overseas. This became Family Favourites early the 1950s but the programming remained the same. Yes not only were Dance halls big business, but as others have mentioned to big Band stage presentations were phenomenal. Listening and watching between 17 and 20 great musicians going at it was something special. The same sort of music is still around, not least by Keith Mansfield who puts bands together for touring - or at least he did. We were born three months apart and three doors apart. That makes him 81 like me! Memories flood back at this time of life!

I got hooked on Brubeck real quick, everyone else came along after that. I'm not a Miles Davis fan, I prefer the sweet sound of Chet Baker and he sang quite well also. I have some old jam session CDs featuring Benny Goodman and Teddy Wilson before they became big band leaders gives me goose bumps every time I listen to them. Grapelli and Reinhjardt were early jazzmen that I really like. I don't care for the new smooth jazz, too technical no feeling.
