it's hard to be happy when you're alone when you used to have so many that cared then one day they just stopped, now you walk the hallways alone, don't say more than 3 words a day other than "exuse me" "sorry" when you bump into someone, sit at lunch by yourself pretending to be busy so you don't feel like such a loser, go home do your work then stare at the ceiling because there's no one to talk to or who would invite you over. yeah, I really hope high school isn't the best years of our lives

I don't think you understand. This song is not about being alone FOREVER, but that sometimes being alone is who you are and what you should be. And all that waiting will be rewarded in time, with the perfect person you were meant to be with. After all the hurt and rejection, waiting to find the right person is the good thing to do. And what John is saying, is that sometimes there are times when you shouldn't pursue love. In that sometime, you should be happy being Perfectly Lonely. :)
