Most mussels you get in the supermarket or seafood shops are from Mussel farms. There are oyster farms too, a lot of fish are even being grown in farms now. Sometimes the farms are fenced off areas of coast and other times they're just huge pools inside warehouses. Have a look at New Zealand mussel farming online, I've been to see them before and they grow on these rope type things 😊

With wild mussel you should take one part of the shell off leaving meat and one shell together. Mix a one to one cup ratio of mayonnaise and Sriracha together add a tablespoon of honey for slight sweetness. Bake in your oven for 15 minutes at 350 degrees and sprinkle shredded cheese before taking it out to melt.

@Nick_Kratka did you manage to try freshwater mussels and freshwater crayfish while here in New Zealand? You collect the freshwater mussels kind of like the same way you'd gather cockles by digging the sand with your feet in the water at the beach but with the Freshwater Mussels you do the same thing but in any of our many lakes. The freshwater crayfish are harder to catch and are so small. I remember when i was a kid, my cousin and i were at the creek with a plastic drum and had filled it three quarters with freshwater crays. A man drove past and bought the drum off us for like $30. We went home all proud about our sale only to find out that each of the crayfish could fetch $20 to $30 at market. He bought over $500 worth of freshwater crayfish for $30. They're sold in high end restaurants, the creek that we used to get them from has pretty much dried up now due to hydroelectric dams further up country, the stream is a tributary of a tributary of New Zealands second longest river.

Technically not whole, there's a tiny like "rubber" nub that is attached to the shell but the meat comes right off it if cooked. Quite nice in laksa or other Asian soups
