I have a VXDAS Nexzscan in my vehicle: a 2007 Xterra. I was driving one afternoon when the Check Engine Light came on. My scanner determined it was my gas cap. Not only was I able to diagnose, repair, dismiss the code, VXDAS Nexzscan offers a subscription for personal use. It has features such as 40k DTC definition,retrieves generic,manufactures-specific and pending codes as well as vehicle information(VIN,CIN,CVN) .including the ABS/ Stabilitrak codes.and shows service intervals, what service is typically needed, average prices, and is able to find repair shops. VXDAS Nexzscan can show some live data as well. VXDAS Nexzscan cannot do a smog check nor show freezeframe data, but with my model year to fail a smog requires extreme wear in the exhaust or engine, which it has not come to. I’d like to see a comparison of VXDAS Nexzscan and obdlink, along side dealer-level or shop diagnostic tools for fairness.

Got the same OBD device. Thanks for the video. I think I will test RVS and/or X1R oil additives and do before/after acceleration and fuel consumption measurements to see if they actually reduce friction or not. If they do, might add the same stuff to transmission to see whether there's any additional improvement.

Ron, yes. You can move this between different vehicles. But if you want the extended features that let you access model-specific detailed data then that requires a software update for that vehicle. The OBDLink comes with 1 free model-specific update. Additional car models can be purchased for a fee. I used my update to download software specific to my Mustang, and it really expands how much data can be seen. For my other cars, the generic OBD data has been enough for me to do what I want to do.

I recently purchased this device for my 2011 Hennessey Raptor. Super cool to track boost, engine power, and rpm. I see you monitor boost in you dashboard. In you experience does the boost and horsepower track to what your stang is rated at? My supercharger is built to boost at around 10 pounds and the Hennessey dyno indicated my truck pushed 605HP at time of test in 2011. Today, at 6000 rpm, the OBD dongle is showing 20 pounds of boost and 800HP.
@MikeFyxdt2 жыл бұрын
Jeff, those are amazing numbers! My car isn't boosted - I think it's vacuum on the dash gauge. IMO the only real test for horsepower is on the dyno, not these devices. If I had to guess I'd say I'm putting down about 440 at the wheels. If you are pushing 605 I'm not going to mess with you! :)

For map, beside latitude and longitude, does it export anything else? Velocity, G-forces, altitude? For how long can you create a report file? Can you record logs from a +15 hours trip?
@MikeFyxdt5 жыл бұрын
Cosmin F - Thanks for the nice words! Great questions - I can at least give you a partial answer... the log file is saved as a .csv (comma separated value) file. I generally only grab data for vehicle speed and throttle position, but you can choose from a huge list of different data parameters. For my simple needs I get a snapshot (in elapsed seconds) about every second, plus the GPS latitude and longitude and the speed/throttle data. I don't know if you can set limits to the log file size - but suppose you wanted to grab 10 parameters. If you logged that much data every second for 15 hours, that file would be 54,000 rows of data with over half a million individual pieces of data! I don't know if there's a point where the software (or your hardware) will max out...but I'd love to hear back from you to see what your experience is. Thanks for adding spice to the conversation!

@decosse014 жыл бұрын
Starting around the 8 min mark, I was trying to see how much (if any) lag there was in the display vs the OEM instruments; initially it looked significant - but then I realized that your 'window' was not synch'd to the actual display - now, I can't really make out the rpm on the display, but the speed reading certainly looked to be quite reasonably closely synch'd from what I could see. Your embedded window was a nice idea but because it's not synch'd it is quite misleading (and negatively so!) Maybe you can just comment on what you actually see - is there much of a lag of display vs instrument? The rpm is probably the easiest to recognize how quick it is. I'm using a cheap ELM Bluetooth device and the lag is horrible, it's OK for diagnostics, but hopeless for real-time. Wondering if the OBDLink is worth the premium price. Appreciate your feedback
@MikeFyxdt4 жыл бұрын
decosse01 - Your eye for detail is excellent: The OBDLink MX+ Bluetooth unit is actually _very responsive_ , and there was no noticeable lag. The problem you saw in my video was that the background footage was shot at the standard 30 fps, but my phone's screen grab used variable/different timing. As a result, when editing the two together, I had to constantly adjust the inset OBD video so it lined up. The sequence where I tested the Performance tools (around 8:00) was synchronized at the start, but drifted out of sync pretty badly. It also skips in places where it dropped frames. I guess by 8 minutes of editing I just missed it. Thanks for noticing and pointing it out, so I can address it here in the comments!

@@MikeFyxdt Thanks Mike! I can certainly appreciate the difficult in achieving that synch through editing, especially after the fact with videos already 'in the can'! The main question for me was answered by your prompt reply - it's nice to have that affirmed - much appreciated. Incidentally I searched through many videos trying to find an example of how good the 'lag' was with these OBDLink devices, having seen a hint of this, I was keen to explore further; yours was the only one that came even close - a great service would be if you could shoot a short video that captures both OEM and phone display together to demonstrate this specific capability (which for me is the most important factor in these devices). Thanks again for demonstrating all those other capabilities.

@decosse01 - thanks for the idea. I'll see what I can do...
@MikeFyxdt4 жыл бұрын
@decosse01 - Well I finally was able to do a test, and the answer is that there is a slight amount of lag - milliseconds - between the OBDLink MX+ and the dash gauges. It's negligible - most probably a result of the Bluetooth connection. But the OBD device is very consistent. I shot a video with the OBDII screen and the dash in the same picture so you can see for yourself - you'll have to let me know what you think! Video is coming soon...

Hey Mike are you familiar with bi-directional scanners too. I don't have the expertise or knowledge yet to be able to tell the differences between them. I am looking for one that has the most features but gets either free Software updates or at least the lowest cost-effective annual pricing for the updates. I have looked at Autel, Foxwell, and the INNOVA 5610 for starters. I am looking to pay maybe around $500USD for the unit, but if I have to pay a little more so be it. I just want the biggest & best bang for the dollar. Shortly I will be retiring & will be able to spend a lot more time working on my own car as well as family members cars. I think these scanner are very useful in saving money and a fun toy to learn by. Thank U. Plse respond asap.

Anthony, unfortunately no. I don’t have any experience with them. I understand the concept, but I only know enough to probably screw up my car. Read-only is my safe place. It must be exciting to be near retirement, and to be able to pursue new adventures. If you get into the bidirectional scanners then stop back and give me an update what you found!

The MX+ comes with one free car-specific upgrade. Instructions are here: www.scantool.net/scantool/downloads/265/mxp_add-on_instructions.pdf. I think the optional car-specific software can be purchased through the OBDLink app, but I haven't done it. Hope that helps!

Techman Tobi - thanks for the nice words and for subbing! I have not found this feature. My OBD lives most of the time in my Mustang, which is manual transmission. @@omararafat Hi! The short answer I received from OBDLink tech support is that the OBD-II data is mostly related to emissions data, but that some aspects of hybrid (or electric) car data may be available depending on model. Here is the full text of my message from Technical Support at OBDLink.com: "The OBDLink app, by default, only connects to OBD-II(emissions-related) data. However, we have found that Most Hybrid vehicles and some electric vehicles support a subset of OBD-II PIDs. However, this varies from vehicle to vehicle." I also asked is there model-specific data that can be purchased/accessed that lets you read hybrid/electric vehicle system reports... and the reply was: "The OBDLink apps enhanced diagnostics add-ons do add the ability to read certain hybrid PIDs from supported makes and models. However, it would depend entirely upon your vehicle to support reading these PIDs." Hope this helps! Mike :)
