Hi Geoff, -- This is excellent advice and an excellent procedure for Annual Locomotive Inspections for any brand of our little Lokey's. Many Thanks for posting this Info Geoff! -- I perform a similar procedure, with certain items like Safety Valve Inspection & Pressure Testing, Pressure Gauge Readings, and observing for various steam leaks, and Chassis Inspection and Lubrication needs performed "habitually" with every "Steam-Up" of each Locomotive. -- To make Locomotive handling much easier for Inspections, Cleaning, & Lubrication, etc., on the "Bench-Top", I have custom-built a simple "Padded Cradle" which can adequately support an "Inverted" Loco by its own Cab Roof or Cab Sides (the Roof may also be removed), and by the Exhaust Stack only, and so designed to not interfere with other Detail Parts. The "Padded Cradle" is a simple "Plank" about 7" to 8" in Width, and 18" to 24" in Length, with Padded or Cushioned "Blocks" of wood held to the Plank by a friction-fit using Dowel Pins. These adjustable Padded Blocks can be made "Sized-To-Suit", and "Adjustable" to fit a specific Locomotive "Cab to Exhaust Stack Length" configuration providing clearance of other Detail Parts. The "Padded Blocks" to fit beneath the Cab Roof section are made in separated "Left & Right Halves" with suitable clearances to allow for certain Detail Parts commonly found on Cab Roofs. This is a simple Padded Cradle idea with actually very few parts. -- My Cradle is kept handy, and is frequently used with almost every Steam-Up "Inspection and Preparation" of any of my Lokey's. And, the Cradle can be easily transported to "Steam Meet Tables" at any such Club or Group gathering. The device can prevent a lot of damage to Details, etc., which can easily occur from the practice of laying a Lokey on it's Side or Inverted on a plain "Towel or Concocted Pads" on the Bench-Top. Such a Padded Cradle is indeed a device idea sent by the "Steam God"! -- BEST WISHES FOR A HAPPY AND PEACEFUL NEW YEAR TO ALL!
