Fabulous set up and talent. I'm getting a perfourmer and DRM Mk3 and cant wait to add those incredible instruments to my set up. Question - have you tried any compressor/ gates post the Vermona's on the way into Ableton and do you add plug in FX in Live? Thanks
@MikaForsling
@MikaForsling 5 жыл бұрын
Mark Parker, thanks and nice with the perfourmer! Here comes the long explanation for my studio setup.. All my synths and drum machines goes to to a patchbay hooked up to my mixer. From there selected channels goes to my audio interface through the four mix groups (8tracks) of the mixer. I use the AUX sends of the mixer to feed hardware FXs(mainly reverbs and delays), that are recorded directly on separate tracks in Ableton (so none of the effects are going back to the mixer). Since all I/O in the studio are connected to patchbays I can easily chose if I want an hardware compressor after a sound source, as an FX insert on the mix busses, or as an external audio effect in Ableton. Normally I record all my sound sources dry and adding delay and reverbs (recorded on their own tracks in Ableton) and I do all further processing from the box (plugins, EQing, inserting hardware FXs and compressors etc). I don’t actually use that much compression on synths(if it’s not needed) but rather like to use a bus comp on drums and one on the complete mix. Hopes it all makes sense!

@@MikaForsling Sounds very much like I am doing it, except that right now i don't have a proper mixer, but instead 16 channels of AD that I am going in directly. Next thing I'd like to get will be either the Perfourmer, I really dig it's sound, or bespoke mixer. I am looking for a rack mixer cause my space is pretty limited. I saw that your mixer goes for a pretty penny used. Would you say it's worth its money and what makes it so expensive?

Great work Mika! Question, is every note programmed in ableton or some of the notes are generated by perfourmer? If you ever have time would love to see you do a video on your workflow and how everything is mexhing together with ableton! :) Thanks, Roman
@MikaForsling
@MikaForsling 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Roman! I would love to share my workflow but I’ll need to figure out a way how to practically do this. This piece have a progression of eight chords that are looped and sequenced by ableton. Every chord have four long notes that lasts until next chord are triggered(just like a pad). The fun starts when the perfourmer’s four LFOs modulates the different filter cutoffs with different subdivisions. Also changing the octaves for the four voices can make a development in the music. Hope this makes sense!

Doing a sequence like this with an octatrack are working as good as in ableton. For me it just takes more time to program chords and complex stuff with the octatrack(if I’m not using an midi keyboard/controller) but I would still be able to do the same stuff. Exiting, it’s a nice combo!

Ben Bassu the sub37 is beefier, so for heavy basses I prefer the sub, but for textures, chords, melodies and basses (as well) the perfourmer is just a great synth.
@TheCALMInstitute
@TheCALMInstitute 5 жыл бұрын
These are pretty opposite synths. There's not a lot of overlap between the two - the sub37 can do these big complicated modulation-heavy things, and the perfourmer kind of...well it makes complexity and movement in an incredibly simple, novel way. Both sound great though, you can't go wrong here IMO.

Are you using any DAW, or are you mainly using hardware? With Abletons compressor and glue compressor you can get descent results. If I’m mixing in the box I’m using some different Waves plugins. My experience is that you get better results with plugins (in my case -emulating classic compressors) then with lo budget hardware compressors. If you only wanna run hardware, try out some different hardware compressors and listen what works for you!

Nuclear Whale, thanks for your post! The sequence are just long chords playing from Ableton - one voice per tone (as you can hear in the start). Then the rhythmic stuff are created by letting the LFO’s control the individual filters for the four voices. The LFO’s are synced in different subdivisions from Abletons tempo. Hope it makes sense!
