Aaaaa the moment Usher sings along with his mother is so powerful. It shows how internalized his parents’ views have become, as well as how predictable his mother’s speech is for him, but also how everything his mother says can be reversed back on her. “I don’t want your soul to be wasted - it hurts me so bad sometimes I can taste it.” I don’t know if this was the original intention, but I feel like Usher relating this back to her indicates how she is culpable in her own condemnations. Either way, it’s such a layered performance. God I love this show.

The journey this song takes is astounding. The climax is soul crushing. This show deserves every award possible.

The pain and conflict in this song brought tears to my eyes. When this pandemic is over, a trip to NY to see this amazing production is on the top of my agenda.

It's a beautiful show. Unfortunately its world premiere (and only full run so far) closed off-Broadway last summer, but hopefully there will be a future staging one day. Perhaps with its just having won the Pulitzer Prize there will be interest in a remount after everything going on is over.

@@saverioman Was at the first preview and have been back 3 times already. Going on 5/25 and want to be at the performance after they win the Tony Award for Best Musical!
