Alessandro Bombaci, MD, University of Turin, Turin & Vita-Salute San Raffaele University, Milan, Italy, discusses his study assessing the use of peripherin as a novel biomarker in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Peripherin is a neurofilament subunit, mostly expressed in the peripheral nervous system. Plasma peripherin was quantified in 120 ALS cases, 46 mimics, and 38 healthy controls. Dr Bombaci highlights that peripherin levels were able to distinguish patients with ALS from patients with ALS-mimics and healthy controls. Levels of peripherin in plasma also correlated with clinical features - patients with a higher level had less impairment and showed reduced progression of disease. Further studies are needed to better understand peripherin patterns in comparison to other more established neurofilament markers. This interview took place at the European Academy of Neurology (EAN) Annual Meeting 2024 in Helsinki, Finland.
